Subject: Creating a tighter community

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I can't wait for everyone to leave, being here for the "rebirth" of the community, if you will, will be great. I've only been here for a short time and looking at all the different events/accomplishment/general hilarity that went on here before I joined makes me feel quite ... unaccomplished, like I missed out.

Most of this was because Bungie's Halo series was coming to a close when I came, the community has grown and they also lost excitement of all the new events they've seen so many times before. The "Magic" was disappearing, but now it's a fresh start, the community has returned to it's infancy.

We're no longer "Halo Veterans", we're the newbies of their new franchise, fresh faced youngsters ready to explore and to learn in this new world. A place where only we exist and due to our small numbers we all know one another, thanks to this new world we will also regain the vitality we once had.

Instead of everyone being faceless anonymous they'll be "That guy, who's a artist" and "That guy, who's a doctor" and whenever we have one of those "Great ideas" that you just have to do, we won't go "Ah but that sounds like work" or "It's impractical", we'll say "I have to do this" and when there's something we can't do due to lack of knowledge or ability, we won't give up, we'll ask the artist to help us with our drawings or the writer to help us with our storyboards.

We will achieve things as of yet we're too old and lazy to accomplish, we will achieve greatness, and for a short while coming here will no longer be a routine, it'll be a experience.

You're right. We, the community, just graduated from High School, and we're off to college.

We were used to being on top as seniors, but now we're freshman again. It'll take some adjustment to understand and get used to, but it's also a great time to redefine who we collectively are.

Many of us might not get this clean slate again.

Agreed, its like bungie.net is starting again, one of the things i'm looking forward to the most is actually being on top of the canon, i have no idea about some of the Halo canon, so i don't feel i can truly venture into the Universe forum, the new IP gives us a chance to start again and gain all the knowledge again, which will be amazing.

Which is, this place is growing and will likely continue to. And it will grow with fans, and people who simply want to complain. It will grow with people who embrace anonymity, and others who want to know one another on some "personal level". It will grow apart before it grows tighter. It would be like filling a balloon with too much water... At first, it's small and not stretched beyond any limit. But begin to fill it, and once balloon begins to retain too much water, it becomes crowded to the point where trying to hold it together under that much weight pressure is just impossible.
The way I see it:
Halo is the balloon, it's creator just popped it to fill up a new one and although some of the water was salvaged and used to fill up the new balloon to some extent, it's still no where as stretched out as the old balloon was.

Now I know you was intending your metaphor within a different manner, but you can understand where mine is coming from, can't you?

Far too many flimsy metaphors in this thread for my liking. And as i just typed that I had a wee idea. Back in a mo!

I completely agree with you here. One of the things It was kind of disappointing for me missing out on were the ARGs, and the entire build up for a new game (Which is why I'm so interested in their next one).

It's going to be great seeing a new wave of community members joining us when the IP is officially announced. Though we will all be in the same boat when it does :)

I do. In fact, someone in another thread made a good point. And similarly the same one is sort of being made here... A lot of people have left. Things are a bit calmer now now, and there's hope for rebuilding something different.

I hope that's the case. I really do. But there is always the chance of things becoming too crazy again.

I agree.

I would love to see the community thrive on this downtime, it will just make the wait that much better.

Oh of course, with the ever growing waves of new users we'll most likely be overwhelmed at some stage, turning from a small neighbourhood into a big city once more.

But as of this moment, at least for a short while, I hope we can function like a small town once more.

The good thing is I've already seen signs of that transformation occuring, the interaction of the people within these forums on a personal level rather than a anonymous level seems to have gone up recently, not to mention the rise in community projects and the general quality of conversation has gone up.

I think I've had more interesting, intelligent discussions in the last few days than I've had in the whole year before that.

Yeah, every new franchise it's like panning for gold.
You stick your pan in and get what looks like a pile of muddy water, but shifting through you find some nuggets of gold and in the end the dirt goes back into the river but you keep the gold.

Right now we're getting to be all gold baby, at least until Bungie sticks the pan back in.

I've come to that same realization just earlier today. It's like being outside when the temperature drops, the wind picks up a bit, and you start seeing the silver on the trees (+1 if anyone gets that last part).

The question is, is it going to be a thunderstorm of awesome, or a tornado of disappointment.

Yes. I'm not necessarily saying Bnet has to change, just that I noticed that now might be the start of the best opportunity to change. I wanted to raise awareness.

It is up to the site administration, - and us, too - to decide if we want change, and if we do, what changes could be made.

B.net doesn't have to change, but we all know it probably will in fair time.

I completely agree, we should use this as an advantage to better the experience here on B.net and in the Bungie universe. All it takes is a little elbow grease and LOTS of ideas and inspiration from us the Bungie Community. :)

Thing is, the more users that are here, the broader the site gets. Most sites are often popular with teens while older members just lurk and check the news.

The site in regards to user behavior will stay the same.

I think the close relations between Bungie and the community encourages more of the older members to post as well as lurk.

Well, this is what I think will happen. Those of us that have been here since high school for 4 or 5 years have jobs now. Most* of the users that bring in content will be young and bored with no jobs.

*Most, not all. Us oldies can post too you know.

Well, I for one recognise you.

I mean, you're still a newbish '05er but, whatever ;)

Any new features for the forums would, of course, require Bungie to develop them. I love features though.

Maybe...

I worry that most of the discussors are Mythic because...
1.) We're the one's who visit the Septagon the most
2.) Could normal member count be dropping off a little already?

Magic is magical, so are shoes... Along with plastic.
Don't forget to flush the toilet, because -blam!- stinks.

I agree that we should take advantage in this downtime. What I see remaining in these forums are the core Bungie fans, not just Halo fans (in this forum anyway). We are willing to stay through thick or thin while there are newcomers inbound. IF there are plans for new components or extensions to be added to the forums (with minimal exploitation without reporting) it would be at this time, or the near moments before the new IP reveal.

Basically, what you wrote, I agree. :)

Well, if a site has less features the casual forum goer is less likely to sign up, or if they do, stick around.

But this isn't a good thing.

What does that say about Bnet if it seems boring that people don't even want to join. What you're describing is a scenario where people don't care about what they are joining, which I think is why we have the problems that we have: Alt accounts, gross frequency of off topic discussion, significant imbalance of discussion in the Flood vs elsewhere.

Can we truly look at what we have and not say "We can do better?"
