"Political or religious discussion is prohibited"

While I agree this is a very important rule, I can't help but see this as very unspecific.

Ex.) Our troops are more likely to shoot you than to protect your freedoms. They die for nothing, etc.
I find this as political as Aborition, religious debates, and government issues. This is a very touchy subject. It also attacks a part of the US government. Should a Ninja be encouraging the discussion (see end pages)?

Ex.)Abortion is Wonderful
This is a topic created for a flame war. But is it really any different than the other topic? [topic found at random to give example].

My point is, I find this to be a bit annoying. I can say that making a topic like these is some times up to chance and depends on the moderator that is watching the forum.

This is my opinion, so understandably, I do not intend to single out users. Only to bring this to light.

Political threads are more like "Liberals/Conservatives are wrong!"

This is true, but at the same time, this thread is on the same level as "911 was planned by our government." With the recent tragedy of the 30 Seals killed, you can't help but see this wasn't created for mature discussion. I don't care if it was the OP's opinions, or if he was just sharing the article. This is pushing the boundary in a moral debate far worse than most "liberal/Conservative" threads.

My thoughts also. I'm curious to see the explanation.

Linking a inflammatory thread and opening this discussion ripe for trolling and flame wars isn't something we need in an off topic forum.

The topic is political/Controversial. Making a political topic, even if your views are reasonable, is usually case for a lock.

If I were to start a topic about Religious Creation vs. Evolution, and linked a random article it would be locked. Thats religious.

This is political in that it is a topic up to debate and morally, people strongly diagree Its a flame war.

He'd have instantly stopped and knelt down, one fist on the ground, hoping to be impervious to the officer's attacks. When this would have failed and he's in the back of the police car, he'd blame his predicament on his friends for not being team players.

That first thread is pretty close though. Apparently Yoozel isn't locking it, he's posted a few times.

This brings us back to the reasoning political threads are locked. They cause flame wars. By that reasoning, something as controversial as saying "don't thank our troops" should be locked

Well it doesn't really matter. Because those people will get the treatment the mods deem fair. But you will not be banned as long as you stick to those^^ guidelines. Don't follow their example and walk a fine line like that because both of those threads are ban-worthy.

It all depends on the Forum Ninja's interpretation of what they see in front of them, there are no real outlines as to what is political and what is just discussion.

It is very political, and so is the article it links.

To say that our military doesn't protect our freedom, and we should stop thanking our troops is a silly grabber sentence that is likely to offend just about every person on the forum who has served or knows someone who has served or is serving. The article diffuses into several political discussions that all centralize that the US isn't as free as people claim it to be (with a liberal bent).

It seems to me like it's just another conservatives/liberals fire starter...

Flame Wars kill forums.

See Reach forum for example. Is it hard to enforce the rules fairly? I've been moderating a group for a year now. I understand when you can't keep control because of too many members, but don't...don't ignore your own rules.

I know it doesn't mean that. I was going to request it locked when I was felt like I was getting flamed. Yoozel posted in the thread, and didn't feel like it should be locked and allowed the discussion to continue.

If you really want to stretch "what's political?" then how about this:

Any thread that features more than a single opinion or answer is a political thread. Why? Because there are conflicting views and answers to everything.

On Bungie.net, to me, a political thread regards those decisions that are decided by those in government politics.

The first thread you picked out attacks a part of the US government, so that should be locked by now.

Your other thread involves morality, and is not a political thread, however, shouldn't be allowed due to obvious flamebait and trolling.

"Even in death, your Sergeant guides us home."

No politics on bungie are like who did you vote for and economy crap. Stuff about wars is actually worth posting to.

  • 08.08.2011 5:25 PM PDT

Nearly anything can turn political as the conversation evolves. As long as it isn't blatantly political or childish in its view I think ninjas should be lenient.

For instance, I would have banned VII Toast (the author of the thread that you linked to) because that story is overtly political in nature. It is not a news story, it is a hack job written by an obviously partisan writer.

On the other hand, people who post factual news stories that have some political aspect, such as the US credit being downgraded, should be fine. Yes, there are political aspects, but that is not the only theme.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

I know this probably isn't what you're quite looking for but it really depends on the ninja who reads the thread. It's just like someone stated above me, any thread can turn into a political thread.

I don't see why, VII Toast simply made a thread linking to an article that others might have wanted to discuss. The thread wasn't political from the start, however, other people could have made it political. The thread wasn't a flame thread from the start, however, other people could have made it a flame war.

I don't agree with that article, and I would be free to express that opinion in that thread, and others would be free to object to my opinion.
