I know that registration can't be too difficult, but this is getting ridiculous. Even if someone gets banned, they usually have an alt ready; it's getting out of hand. I don't have any solutions, so feel free to post yours below.

Subject: Making Alts Shouldn't Be So Easy

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

There isn't much anyone can do. What's to stop someone from just signing up with a new e-mail account after they are banned?

The only problem with that is the time it takes to get your account approved. Lets say you are a regular first time person and you want to sign up.. You would have to wait for a certain amount of time (I've seen people waiting for up to a month or so) before you could actually see what's going on. I don't think any of the mods or employees would like to spend their day approving and people to the site.

How can alts be distinguished from other new accounts that are people new to the site?

Don't really see what keeps the trolls from waiting for approval. Besides, would you really want our Mods having that ability?

You could easily get past that. How could moderators possibly know if you're a troll, if your account hasn't been approved and they have nothing to base their judgement off of?

Your IP and location to check if they are registered on any other accounts, otherwise, nothing.

Say you're brother gets banned but you're now into Bungie games and want to make an account, you now can't play? Honestly, they're never going to implement a system like that.

There already is a system like that. If your account gets banned, every other account that logs onto Bungie with the same IP will get banned as well.

Also, I edited my post, I meant to say that was one way you can tell if someones a troll or not.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Sponsorship.

Accounts of a certain age are permitted to make an invite. A new account is partially the responsibility of the account who invited/referred them. If the new member gets banned multiple times, their sponsor loses their ability to invite/suggest new members.

New accounts (with clean records for a certain period of time with actual activity) are then "graduated" from their sponsor and can then sponsor new members of their own.

Anyone making a disruptive alt would then be putting not only that "disposable" account at risk, but the account that recommended them (which would be displayed on the probationary accounts information). The older and more trusted an account is, the more new members they could invite and sponsor, but if any of those misbehave, the trust of the sponsor goes down.

Sort of like invites to Google+ only with feedback to the process.

An invite only community sounds like a good but bad idea.

New, non-sponsored accounts could be created, but their posts-per-day would be limited until they either passed a probationary period or gained a sponsor (who took the time to review their history and considered them worth the risk). The sponsor would also be a "big brother" to the new account. The post limit would encourage lurking and getting to know the site/forums and community, the sponsorship would result in a "big brother" effect where the sponsor (out of interest for their own trust rating and perhaps even extra special titles or reward icons for getting new accounts to maturity) would counsel and advise the new member as to how to be a positive and contributing member.

Edit for Recon Number 54's second post.

Even then, how does one reach maturity without the sponsor? And why have a sponsor system if it can be over-ridden by just making a new account, same amount of trolls but less posts per day. The problem is not solved, just decreased (very little, I may add).

Maybe you could request a membership if you have a clean Xbox Live account, i.e. no bans, good service record or something?

It's just a random thought, being put into the crucible of the forums for examination, criticism, testing, challenging, being taken apart and put back together.

But think about the title whores we have. Imagine a new level/type of accomplishment. Recruiting, orienting and training new members who comply with rules and even renew the cycle of sponsorship. Imagine a scoreboard or tally page listing your "trainees" and their trainees. A vast pyramid of your effect on growing and improving the community.
