"Ultimate excellence lies
Not in winning
Every battle
But in defeating the Enemy
Without ever fighting."

-Sunzi: Master of War.

FjordStudios, to commemorate one of the most intriguing games of All Time, is stepping forth to stars and looking down at the possibility of Marathon rising from its shallow grave.

Combining both the original and second Marathons, Marathon: Rekindled will surely grasp the hearts of many long-time players in this new-and-improved remake. Marathon: Rekindled will use the Unreal 3 (TM) Engine to convey the nostalgic joys of the first game into our timeless variant that is sure to please a broad audience, whether they've run the race, or are just getting started.

Currently, Marathon: Rekindled is still in its Alpha Phase, and support for the remake is at its apex. I advise all of you young whipper-snappers, both grizzled and clammy, to patiently wait for our efforts to bring this authentic shooter to life.

It will be a while before results begin to turn-in, so stay tuned for further updates! Maybe even pictures, if you're good.

All rights of Marathon and its trademark go to Bungie. FjordStudios does not take credit for the original series, and would never try to "fix what isn't broken."

Update: Marathon: Rekindled has been temporarily halted due to Unreal Engine licensing issues, though it will continue soon.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

This is pretty amazing, but which platforms? PC?

I still play Marathon Resurrection. And it's still amazing.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

If you're using unreal 3, will this mean that the game will avoid the pitfall of requiring another game to play?

Also, do you have a full team together at present? Just curious.

If I had a Rocket Launcher, I'd make somebody pay.

Where can we follow the development? This could turn out really interesting, good luck!

Currently, yes. We're aiming for release on Xbox LIVE Arcade as well; but it's just a possibility at the moment.

You can follow the development in this thread, which will periodically update.

We are separately coding everything right now. Don't worry, Marathon: Rekindled will be in "download" format upon release, and it will need no special program or game to run.

In fact, yesterday our Unreal Scripts were successfully spliced away from its usual Unreal Tournament test format. Horah!

I'm fully aware of Resurrection, but what we're aiming for here is a remake of the series fused into one game. In a way, Resurrection has also served as inspiration for our own project.

Resurrection still looks good if you use Bloom, HDR, bumpmaps, anti aliasing and anistrophic.

I really hope you guys remake Durandal, though, I liked it a lot more then M1.

Also, do you have any screenshots or anything? No offense, but you just popped out of nowhere.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

I will be so happy if this is true. I've tried playing Marathon and Marathon: Durandal, and even though they are great, I find it harder to get tied up into the story with the not so smooth graphics and the plot being told by text. If you remaster these games, please make someone do a voice over for the terminals.

  • 08.10.2011 12:41 PM PDT

This oughta be good. God speed.

That is a terrible idea. if you can't get into the text terminals, marathon isn't right for you.

It would be fantastic if this made it to the Arcade. Which reminds me that I need points...

I would really like this. I enjoy Marathon 2 on the Xbox, but the graphics really get me lost a lot.

I kind of agree with it being a bad idea. Reading is good. If you can't get into a story because it's told through text then Marathon isn't for you and neither are books.

Leave terminals the way they are.

Will this project also feature multiplayer, or are you just sticking to remaking the the campaigns?

On the second thought, how are you getting it on the xbox live arcade? Unless I'm mistaken, there's the UDK cannot build XBE's. And why haven't you posted about this on a Marathon forum like http://pfhorums.com? And why is there no moddb page? And why is it that the only google search result that has ANYTHING to do with marathon for Marathon: Rekindled is THIS thread?
