Subject: how did kat die from one head shot from a needle rifle

At the end of the 8th mission kat gets killed from one headshot from a needle rifle. I have 2 problems with this. first is how she died from one head shot and second is how in the world do you get that jackles overpowered weapon of doom?

United Armed Forces

The most popular explanation is that it's an EMP effect.

No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

Her shields were down from the nuclear blast that happened all of fifteen seconds earlier. EMPs can do funny things to electronics that haven't been hardened.

If that explanation doesn't suit you, remember that she didn't put her helmet on until just before she got out of the elevator and got shot; if the suit isn't fully sealed, I doubt the shield works and there was no way her system had enough time to recharge the shields before getting sniped.

what emp ? can jackels use armor lock to? how did mastercheif do it ?

  • 08.09.2011 4:55 PM PDT

The radiation from the Covenant glassing the city knocked out her shields, or that her shields wouldn't of had time to re-engage after putting her helmet on... no shields + 1 headshot = death

yay thats a good reason thanks

Just like the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know...except Bungie.

Pretty much this. The radiation from Covies glassing New Alexandria, especially in such close proximity to Noble Team, caused an EMP effect on their armor systems. It did fry the radio Carter was using after all.

In a room filled with kings and queens some days i feel like the jester!...

that's not very spartan like though you got to remember reach is a hostile environment. so every opportunity a spartan has to recharge their shields they take. I just can see her walking out in the open figuratively naked like that it just doesn't wash...

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

Also, it's important to note that multiplayer is not apart of the Halo canon, for various game-play reasons.

I posted this in another thread, but it was basically answering this same question:

There had just been a massive radiation pulse* in the area, the 'Glassing Beam' firing.
We know Spartan (and Elite) shield systems are vulnerable to E.M.P. It's entirely possible that the E.M. pulse from that shot had completely disabled the MJOLNIR shield systems until they could be reset. No other Spartan seems to have a shield either, but it's hard to tell.

*By Massive I mean Massive. There is clearly an error in the script here, Kat says the magnitude of the radiation spike is "ninety million" Roentgen.
This is well above the lethal dose, it's well above the level you die immediately too.
If that was the true reading, Noble should be dead in that white flare, that's enough ionising radiation to cook the flesh off your bones.

For referance 500 Roentgen will kill you after a few hours exposure, 90,000,000???

Death would be instantanious. No Question.

  • 08.09.2011 5:20 PM PDT

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

I'm pretty sure that the 90 million roentgen thing was the energy that the Cruisr accumulated before firing, as opposed to the energy released in the actual beam.

NO! She is just an idiot that did not activate her shields, because all of the radio equipment on the wall is still powered on AND the elevator and elevator controls still work AND the blast door at the bottom still works, so there was no EMP effect.

I always assumed it was because she did not put her helmet on properly?

When she was talking to Six in the elevator, I could see her neck where the black rubbery part should have been off her helmet.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

The official explanation from Bungie is that she was playing on Legendary.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's very very likely that the electrical equipment in an ONI building is hardened against an EMP. It's quite a simple process and all modern millitary electronic hardware is usually hardened against EMP (in fact many bits of major civilian infrastructure are too), I would expect the UNSC to be capable of the same.

The fact shield systems are vulnerable to an EMP is probably an unavoidable result of the way they function.
MJOLNIR armour itself is certainly hardened against it, the only system affected when a Spartan is hit by an EMP is the shielding system.

Actually, 500 Roentgens is enough to kill you in a few minutes. Bungie most definitely derped when they made it 90 million... What were they thinking?!

And yes, the people saying the glassing disrupted their shields are absolutely right.

I guess they just thought "900 Roentgen!" didn't sound cool enough, or possibly thought the value for one Milliroentgen was one Roentgen.

It is possible that humans grew some form of resistance to radiation, perhaps even being partially immune to it, seeing that they transversed space.

That would be speculation on my part though.

We have a biological capability to increase our resistance to one exclusive type of radiation (light in the ultraviolet band). This is why you tan, but it's very very limited in scope. Even people who have very black skin can still get sunburn (basically mild surface radiation burns) and skin cancers from what is, when all's said and done, not a very energetic form of radiation.

We have no biological systems to protect us from other types of radiation, and it would be impossible to be 'immune' from radiation damage. Respectfully, it's a bit like saying you could become immune to fire, it's not possible.

Well, not completely immune, partially.

And I understand where you are coming from, it was just speculation on my part.

Even if they were to somehow have an immunity (and short of growing lead-lined skin I don't see how they could) the scale difference here is too huge.

500 Roentgen will kill you in short order, but isn't immediately fatal, so this level seems appropriate to the clip: (Kat is worried about the radiation spike, but more concerned with not being immediately glassed).

Except we are told it is 90,000,000 Roentgen.

That is one hundred and eighty thousand times the 'reasonable' guess.

To put that in perspective, room temperature is about twenty five degrees centigrade. 180,000 times that is 4.5 million degrees. That's as hot as the interior of the Sun.

You can't develope a resistance on that scale, it's comic-book levels of immunity, it's just not possible.

The number Kat gives must be wrong.

EDIT: Just realised this looks a bit like a rant, not trying to rant at you at all, I'm just trying to emphasise the scale of the difference here.
