Subject: Why doesn't bungie.net use IP bans?

People can change their IPs fairly easily.

I'm plenty for it. Might start making some people think a little bit longer before they act a damn fool.

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN unfortunately.

IP bans aren't as effective as they may seem.

Bungie.net bans are incredibly easy to evade once you know how to do it. (I'm not going to say how, but most of you probably already know.) Wouldn't it be way more effective to issue IP bans? I know they can be evaded by simply using proxies or resetting the router, but trolls would get tired of finding proxies that work and resetting their routers, at least I'd get tired of doing that if I were a troll/spammer.

Should IP bans be implemented?

lolno

You can ban a whole campus this way.

Last time I recalled Bungie has applied a few Ip bans for certain really bad users. But I don't think they use this method.

Security is just that. It's always beatable, that's not the point. the point is to make life harder for the other side.

Instead of posts like "IP BANS DONT WORK" understand that the OP's idea is more about making it harder for people to run rampant, not stop them. Anything is better then nothing.

I do believe you are wrong.

While I can see how some IP's may get banned inadvertently, I do not think an entire college uses one IP.

If they are stupid enough to only utilize one IP, I would be shocked if they did not split it via a NAT table through a router, inside their DMZ. I also dont think the bans would be at the source IP, just the assigned ones.

IP bans don't make it harder for anyone. They just outright don't work.

I would hardly describe pressing a button on your router/modem as hard, especially when evading a ban at the moment involves flushing all other data and creating a new email address.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

Changing an IP isn't necessarily harder or more troublesome than simply creating a new account.

I don't like the way we go about banning spammers and trolls now, but IP bans are unfortunately not a solution.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

This is the best argument against IP bans. Why should you ruin everyone on that IP's ability to browse b.net because of one person?

Because they are ineffective. Like elm said, all you really have to do is reset your modem.

If they are only 50% effective (which means half the userbase knows how to reset their modem), then there is no point in using man hours to work that into the banning system.

Indeed. I haven't had XBL for a long time, but I still come on her everyday.

If professional ninjas were actually released, all problems would be gone forever.

I get a new IP by pressing a button on my router.

That's well...ineffective at best.

Banning people in general is not a good way to combat spam. Think about it - bans don't prevent spam, they just get rid of it after it is posted. And since the only way to do that is wait until a moderator deals with it, users are kind of screwed.

Admittedly the status quo is not acceptable, but "more bans" or "more ninjas" is not really going to fix anything.

It's possible they've been used in the past, but they're only effective and safe (in terms of not causing unintentional bans) when the banner is sure that the user is on a long-term static IP (even "static" IPs change periodically in domestic settings). As the moderators don't have access to that information, it'd mean someone warranting very close investigation from a member of the web team. More effort than it's worth.

Well, more ninjas would certainly fix the gaping time holes in coverage.
