In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You're failing to see my point. I'm saying what happened shows the potential damage a moderator can do. Also, impurity is another example of bad moderator.

You do make a very good point, but if someone decent and respected or someone who isn't a complete dick head was offered the job would you really go rogue if you knew it would result in you never returning?

This

I would also think that if people were to become mods, they would hopefully be more serious and want to help Bungie.net deal with situations similar to the trolling outbursts we have.

That is the job of the mods, to help everyone else have a fun time here by enforcing the code of conduct and making the forums a safer and fun place for all.

Blair, that's the point he's making. They should pick them well because it's possible for a moderator to be a "complete dick head" and this has happened in the past.

EDIT: This thread is frustrating me, even if I'm primarily lurking. Almost all of you are trying to argue the same thing and you don't seem to realize it.

Yeah but you can't be afraid though.

I mean the web team should watch people closely for consideration to be a mod but if what they see seems fine, why not give them a chance?

If they notice anything "odd", the web team will handle it.

I understand but sometimes there has to be a little risk involved.

Getting new mods would be great for the site and you might get some bad apples in the bunch.

But, it seems more worth it to try and get more moderation on the site despite worrying about some risks which can be fixed.

Trust is a 2 way street.

Not on the internet it's not. On the internet a person can be whoever they want to be. Often, a persons internet personality is quite different from real life. Also, it is quite possible for someone to switch accounts and have a totally different personality on it. This is why trust is a one way street. When Bungie trusts you then you may be contacted. Not before.

Because the current moderator team is more than fine as is...

I'm just sharing my thoughts in hope Bungie will take something into consideration.

I obviously would not, however, there are people out there that probably would.

I wouldn't either, but this proves my point, the majority of people that would be overlooked wouldn't do such a thing.

Ninjas are posters who come here to enjoy the site too, you know. They don't have a "job", they're just volunteers of the community.

Anyways, I'm not exactly sure how it works specifically regarding college campuses, but I wouldn't wan't some idiot ruining my ability to post here because he got the whole college server banned.

Yeah that is why I think IP bans are banned for that reason.

Yes, this is definately a problem. Unfortunately, there are technical reasons that a user can't see instant feedback on reported posts (old forum system is old).

As for more ninjas - that goes back to an issue of trust. Picking new moderators is hard. Nobody likes doing it and it takes forever. It doesn't help that most people who would be good moderators have absolutely no desire to do it because it is a thankless job, and most who want to do it would make terrible moderators. Adding in the limitations of time zone converage as well as the fact that these are volunteers, well, the pool of people effectively shrinks to near-zero most of the time.

At present, it is simply more expedient to live with the status quo until such time as we won't have to anymore.

Posted by: elmicker
It's not about ability, it's about desire. For a user, the report system is opaque and tedious. When a user doesn't see a system work, when they don't get feedback, they're not liable to trust the system and therefore less likely to use it.

Maybe heroic members or more would be immune to ip bans(but not regular bans) that way only troll
Acpunts would be affected. Also making ip bans appealable would solve that issue.

Hate to say this but, that would be a little unfair to standard members because amazingly there are a few good members out there.

That sounds awesome... Except Most members love to feed trolls. Just look at reach forums

Post something like "I like to betray and yooink halo sucks btw!!" obvious troll thread... and a guaranteed hot thread.

Expecting the community actually ignoring then is not really an option. Some of us do ignore trolls. But it isn't enough, specially if the majority of the community doesn't know how to deal with them.

This just doesn't seem to be worth the effort. It's the Internet and everyone is responsible for where they travel. The forums are a free service offered to us and unless you want to go to a Neogaf based model where sponsors are involved and external advertising exists, we aren't going to see the level of security most of you guys want. Ninjas are volunteers, not paid employees that are required to keep this place safe.

When you start seeing google and coca-cola ads pop up and pay the bills, then you can expect some much more stringent rules being enforced. I much prefer the current model. In my experience here, I rarely have to deal with shock sites and the sort. Trust the users posting the links before you click them and ignore spam. There's just not a need for such extensive security available for a free service.

Free is not a excuse. Most forums are free and I have seen communities that are also very big and free an yet they don't have this issues.

Some good and well known examples would be the harry potter forums and the MLP FIM communities

Admitedly this isn't bungie's fault, but that doesn't remove the fact that something must be done.

Yeah, I go on Epic forums and Halo waypoint forums and I never see issues.

Heck on halo Waypoint forums you can post pictures directly in the forums but never has anyone posted anything bad.

It is all about the community itself I suppose.

Anyone smart wouldn't want to be a mod. Like Achronos said, it's a thankless job. Most of the mods wish they could turn off their salmon text and post like regular members without being recognized as mods.

I had no clue you were omniscient. Images were undoubtedly abused at some point, but they must've been taken care of quickly. The Xbox.com forums are quite tightly moderated, and I don't like that. I much prefer how Bungie's forums currently work.

True, many people understand that being a mod is more of a sacrifice than a perk, but this type of a thread attracts those who have aspirations of becoming a mod, even if they know it is unlikely. Most people crave power, and that is what the position is to them. Like I said, I would include myself in this category as I want it, yet know that it is unattainable. Most won't admit this publicly though as they feel it will somehow ruin their chances which are already next to 0.

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

Posted by: Achronos
Banning people in general is not a good way to combat spam. Think about it - bans don't prevent spam, they just get rid of it after it is posted. And since the only way to do that is wait until a moderator deals with it, users are kind of screwed.

Admittedly the status quo is not acceptable, but "more bans" or "more ninjas" is not really going to fix anything.

Make "http" "www" and ".com" ".org" whatever get Blammed so you cannot post naughty links. . normal non banned before users can post link but only ones that are clickable not copy and paste, however people that have been banned cannot use the www.bungie.net option . For repeat offenders just MAC address ban them.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. While I can't imagine the amount of hate mail they get and it would suck to not be able to post normally and mess around, it would still be nice to be able to help the community when you see a problem. Would I agree that most people saying they want to be mods don't realize what they're getting in to? Sure, but there are people who can imagine the downsides and still think it'd be worth it to help.
On topic I thought they did ip bans when you were permabanned, but I guess I was wrong.
