Banning people in general is not a good way to combat spam. Think about it - bans don't prevent spam, they just get rid of it after it is posted. And since the only way to do that is wait until a moderator deals with it, users are kind of screwed.

Admittedly the status quo is not acceptable, but "more bans" or "more ninjas" is not really going to fix anything.

Make "http" "www" and ".com" ".org" whatever get Blammed so you cannot post naughty links. . normal non banned before users can post link but only ones that are clickable not copy and paste, however people that have been banned cannot use the www.bungie.net option . For repeat offenders just MAC address ban them.

Blaming those words would disable the posting of URLs to any website. Naughty or not.

Well, more ninjas would certainly fix the gaping time holes in coverage.

ninjas can work out a time schedule among themselves to combat things at all times. a little coordination isn't too much to ask for is it?

They're volunteers, it's not a job, so a little coordination is a little too much to ask for.

That's impossible.

Whoo.

I dunno, why doesn't the army use waterbombs instead of grenades?
Because IP bans aren't exactly very effective, much like waterbombs in a war scenario, sure it could cause a moment of hesitation but otherwise it won't really slow the opposing forces down.

Also what about areas where multiple people are using the same internet connection? Should I not have access to Bungie.net in my hotel room or college or whatever because one guy decided to be a -blam!- a post links to shock sites? How is it fair that I get punished for the actions of someone else?

And on the "more mods!" issue, more mods would be nice but if there isn't any appropriate people to fill the role/no one who can wants to do it then there's really not many options, I don't want someone who moderates incorrectly to have moderator powers and, even though on occasion certain bans/thread locks get appealed, the current mods are doing a great job as it is.

Sure not EVERYTHING will be taken care of all the time, but if there's a issue sooner or later a mod will take care of it, complete anarchy will not become of the Bungie.net forums.

Another gold text mod said you can. It is called an "Ultra" Ban. Where you cannot even sign in to your account or visit the site I cannot remember which one he said.

So do it differently? Honestly, what've you got to lose from empowering 20 or 30 likely users and then culling them that don't work. It's a risk you take with your usual process anyway; it's not like ye olde "Hey HFCS what do you think of x" is a particularly effective method of vetting people, is it? No to IP bans.

Sorry, I work/live on a college campus. If some asshat decides to spam the forums with useless crap, I would rather not suffer a perma ban from him for being on the same IP.

@OP Don't change the title of the thread asking for it to be locked. It isn't your place to decide whether shouldn't be locked, this isn't your thread and you shouldn't be so silly.

 • 08.10.2011 7:23 AM PDT

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Why not?

If the thread has outlived it's usefulness and the conversation in the thread has spiraled out of control, why no end it?

This was my thought as well.

I don't know how a person can claim the current process for selecting moderators is the only possible way when it they've admitted that it's too restrictive to identify any potential candidates.

Because it's not his power to lock this thread, duh.

It's job of forum ninjas to lock this down. Like Murder said.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I know but sometimes a thread gets so out of control or the OP realizes it will turn out ban so you can request it to be locked and the ninjas will usually lock it.

The OP is not the person who decided whether a thread is locked or not. Without sounding like a hippy, when you post a thread to the forums it is no longer your thing. It belongs to the community in general. The OP doesn't not own the thread, he simply started the discussion.

It's not up to the OP to decide whether the thread has outlived it's usefulness. It is not up to the OP to decide whether the discussion has spiraled out of control. It is not up to the OP to decide to end the thread. All those functions belong to specially picked moderators (whose job it is to moderate discussion).

Say I started a conversation with you about something and then I go away for a while then come back. Upon my return I see you aren't talking about the exact topic I started or that you don't agree with my point of view. You are still having the conversation that I started so I decide that it needs to stop. I Shout out loud that this conversation is over and that you need to stop talking.

See how -blam!- stupid that is? I guess most people wouldn't be too happy if I did that.

For all those arguing for the title change, it's stupid.

As you can clearly see, the title is right here on the top of page 5:
"Why doesn't bungie.net use IP bans?"

So what OP just did was pointless. We still have a discussion without OPs first post.

It stops people from entering the thread because they might just assume it is a thread filled with crap. I usually use thread titles to decide whether or not to enter a thread which I assume some others do to. With the title change people won't know what the thread is about without having to load the thread.
