My idea was shot down with good reasons. This thread has no point anymore so I think it should be locked. I don't want this to become a Spartain Ken-esque thread.
I don't think you have been "shot down".

Banning by IP has been done in other forums. How effective it is here remains to be seen because Bungie doesn't do that.

I don't think the tools are in place for IP bans.
Are they?

Even if they are, I think we need more proactive measures to fight spam.
Permabanning every single spammer would stop them from posting more, but what they got banned for still showed up in the first place.
Is there a way to stop spammers before they start spamming?
To block that kind of user?

I don't think so either.

Ban links for first 48 hours. That will definitely cut down on users that make alts just to post shock links.

Alts can sit on someone's notepad document for a while before they get used.

I don't think that would help.

Y'know that Mary Jane character? An alt showed up minutes after she (or whoever) was banned. Whoever that is had the alt already and was just waiting to use it.

Ban links for a year and we'll see improvement, but that's annoying.

I really wish we could have a smart system of banned links.
Something that learned and adapted automatically based upon reports on posts with links in them and blocked them automatically, collapsing the post.
If URL shortening starts to be a problem, block any instance of that particular shortener.

Subject: Why doesn't bungie.net use IP bans?

Banning people in general is not a good way to combat spam. Think about it - bans don't prevent spam, they just get rid of it after it is posted. And since the only way to do that is wait until a moderator deals with it, users are kind of screwed.

Admittedly the status quo is not acceptable, but "more bans" or "more ninjas" is not really going to fix anything.

Make "http" "www" and ".com" ".org" whatever get Blammed so you cannot post naughty links. . normal non banned before users can post link but only ones that are clickable not copy and paste, however people that have been banned cannot use the www.bungie.net option . For repeat offenders just MAC address ban them.
Well that doesn't seem fair.
