The Game

If I'm honest, I think Microsoft was getting to them. A lot. As much as Halo was their baby, they had only ever made it with Halo 1 in mind originally; winging it, really. After the stress of Halo 2, it seems to me that they just didn't want to be under Microsoft anymore; it just wasn't suited for how they work as a team.

When it comes to keeping talent happy and productive Microsoft Game Studios has been proven to be inept. Bungie devs aren't the only talent to jump ship. Jay Allard got fed up with their crap. All the Rare talent jumped ship years ago.

This is a lesson Microsoft needs to learn from Nintendo and Sony. Whether you like them or not Sony has kept some of the most talented developers working under them for over a decade. For Nintendo decades.

All MGS had to do was form 343 to work on Halo, get some sweet studios close together in Redmond so all those studios can work closely like Sony and Nintendo have their teams positioned, and let Bungie do what they wanna do exclusively for the Xbox.

This.

Comes down to opinion I guess. Halo 3 and ODST were waaaaay more fun then the stupid Arbiter missions in Halo 2.

Anyways...
I'm intrigued by Mr. Staten's quote "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?". The symbols, the shirts Bungie is wearing in the ViDoc and this Destiny word being thrown around is exciting to me. I'm banking on a pretty sweet single player experience. Idk if it will stack up to anything like Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls but we'll see lol.

I think bungie cares a lot,

At least as much as any multi-million dollar game studio can for a person they didnt even know existed....

Bungie loves us, some times they show it with feebies and great games, other times its with a black eye.

(in all fareness, the black eye was my fault. I burnt the roast.)

That's just it. I don't feel I've been delivered a great game. I certainly haven't been given a bad one either, but Reach or ODST or 3 didn't say greatness to me.

As someone who is more interested in single player, I would disagree. I would argue that Reach and ODST, the 2 later games, have a better campaign than Halo 2 and 3. I guess it really boils down to preference and opinion.
Yes, I suppose so. I however cannot see how Reach could be perceived as a superior story in terms of canonical consistency as well as character development. While Halo 2 didn't develop the MC very much, it developed the Arbiter, and the entire Covenant.

I fail to see how tweaking canon is a sign of apathy among Bungie for the single player aspect of the game. They didn't crush canon, they just made a few minor changes.

When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.

I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else but sometimes 99% of the worl will like something, possibly even love it and 1% will hate it. With 7 billion people 99% is amazing, with games 60% is great. I am upset to hear that you did not enjoy the past few games as much as you may have hoped too but unfortunately bungie is continuing to move in a new direction and i fearyou may not like what is to come either.

There come a time in any relationship when you must let go and say goodbye, remember all the good times you had but move on to greener pastures. It may not be fair to you that bungie is growing out of the developer that you once knew and loved but it may work out to your advantage in the end, or not.

We are all at a crossroads, the community members and bungie. Difficult choices lay ahead, i hope that you will continue the journey with many of us but if not, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Whoo.

ODST was pretty nice, and I enjoyed Halo 3's and Reach's campaigns.

Halo 2 was good but the random character swapping really messed the whole thing up for me.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

I have to disagree. Ever Bungie game I've played delivers a powerful story that was thought through well. I haven't seen a lot of emphasis on the multiplayer. Sure, they had some trailers, but they were mostly for the Beta. Now, other games like Call of Duty and Battlefield don't really care as much as they should because they now 88% of the players are in it for Multiplayer. Also, they didn't make a multiplayer for ODST.

Is it fair for me to say that what you just wrote is one large chunk of opinion, with an incredible lack of respect for Bungie's own interest?

Yes, I read the OP.

δόξει τις ἀμαθεῖ σοφὰ λέγων οὐκ εὖ φρονεῖν.

Euripides, Bacchae. 480.

I think ODST perhaps has the best campaign. Generally, however, Bungie's writing is fairly weak.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I don't know about that.

Bungie has always had features for single player players and Campaign like Easter eggs, etc.

But, Since Halo CE times, Bungie has wanted to focus more on multiplayer that connects people.

But, look at gamees like Halo CE, Oni, Gnop :p, Pathways to Darkness, those games had a dominate multiplayer.

Halo never had a fantastic "story". Don't leave Halo 2 out of the downfall either, that game was plagued by abysmal story telling and giant space potatoes.

Personally, i think they've maintained the balance well.

Lets be honest, out of most FPS' out there the Halo series has always included new campaign features, always included co-op, hell ODST was a massive chunk of single player with a bit of firefight to boot, and stuff like theater mode... although people use it for multiplayer, how much fun is it to use for campaign as well?

The fact they fixed peoples issues with how it worked in campaign, and developed some pretty damn sophisticated enemy AI show that they DO still care. Try playing Halo Reach Legendary with a couple of skulls, its not just a case of Harder Difficulty = Enemies have increased damage, tactics, flanking, its all balanced and tweaked to be horrendously difficult yet playable to the last.

A multiplayer focus kept them competitive in the current video games market.

Y'all have seen the story lines of the top two played XBL games, right? Now THOSE are abysmal.

The next game they put out will be much more story-focused, even if that story is told by its players, I guarantee it.
The new IP's multiplayer, as far as I can work out, is one big story told by its players.

Catchy title, anyway.

Edit: Guy above reminds me:

ODST had an incredible story. That single player was amazing.
The atmosphere and the dynamic worked together wonderfully; coupled together with the ability to run around co-op in that same environment, that was, to me, on par with Halo CE campaign.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I didn't have a problem with Halo 3's campaign, but I did have a problem with ODST's and Halo Reach's campaign for one reason... lack of character development. I believe that having too many main characters create an atmosphere that's hard for the gamer to "bond" with any of them.

Now as for the multiplayer being more dominant of the singleplayer, I agree. Now a days gamers mostly focus on the multiplayer, so that's where game developers spend most of their time on.

The whole quality of features in a game are not always represented as a pie chart.

Did you bond better with Master Chief, 343 Guilty Spark, the Arbiter, Truth, Sgt. Johnson, Gravemind, Keyes, and Cortana better?

I don't think it's the main character number that's the problem you have.

Were those characters developed any more?
Well, yeah, but most spanned an entire trilogy.

Halo: Reach stands on its own, by itself, almost unrelated to the trilogy. The characters are only developed through a single campaign.
You can't expect them to be developed to the same degree as a dynamic character like Cortana, they haven't had the air time.
