Subject: Bungie and Activision

Work all night, play all day.

So plenty of rumors are rolling around about what Bungie's next big thing is. And we all know that they are now partnered with Activision, who will publish this new universe. Recently, Activision has rolled out their Call of Duty Elite pay service. With much of the rumors and speculation about Bungie's next game being some sort of MMO-type experience, how would you feel, Bungie community, about a universe that is "subscription" based.

We know how Bobby Kotick feels about these types of services.

Now, I will support Bungie's next thing regardless, everything they make works for me. But do you guys think this could happen?

I miss Halo. Maybe Halo 4 will change that.

Edit: Lol nope

Considering my current finacial affairs and me not having any for the future so far, I doubt I'll be on board if this is announced to be an MMO.

Also an MMO on the PS3/Xbox? I doubt it.

I feel as if Bungie Pro is somewhat equal to CoD Elite...

I would prefer if it was a one time cost, but if Bungie needs it to be subscription based I would pay.

Yea, Im not to sure it could happen on current platforms. Maybe some sort of microtransaction system sort of like EA uses for Madden and NCAA football on 360/PS3?

Not saying it will happen, but who knows.

Giggity Giggity Goo - Quagmire

Bungie still controls their decisions, Activision just distributes the game for them.

I know this as well, I am saying that this is a viable business decision for both companies that could potentially happen.

Blade and soul is coming out on PS3 so it's possible.

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

I'm not paying a subscription fee over xbox live. It's expensive enough as is.

Videogames, Anime, and Interwebz. I love it all!

I've hated the very idea of Bungie working with Activision to the core since its announcement. The worst part being that came speeding at us right after the Infinity Ward debaucle. I don't know what they offered but they sure as hell had better pay it in full when Bungie delivers. I love Bungie too much for them to get screwed over by those -Blam-tards.

The enemy of my enemy shall die next.

I know the voices in my head are not real, but they have some great ideas.

Brown chicken Brown cow!

This Call of Duty Pro thing, where you pay a fee and are able to check your stats online, heatmaps, medals, game overviews etc sound like what bingie has been doing for years for free and long may it continue.

I hope a subscription based game (Phantasy star online springs to mind) would have to offer something that needed the extra resouces and time from the good folks at Bungie then I would be ok with a small fee.

Its all about the quality.

From what I have read, Bungie has made a "rare deal" with Activision where Bungie controls and owns their games. The only Activision may have is the pricing and due date of their new project, but I'm not sure that is even true.

And Bungie's website stats for Halo are already what COD Elite will be and I'm sure they will have the exact same stats for their new project, while still keeping them free.

I mean, they never needed to charge us a fee in the past, why do so now?

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

I don't think Bungie would do a subscription based game.

This. Bungie surely won't do that. The recent vidoc says Bungie tend to respond to their community. And Bungie surely know that the community won't want to pay a subscription fee.

Bungie Update regarding MMO joke ( 5 motnhs ago... ). Doesn't this confirm they're not working on an MMO?

Your toast has been burned! And NO amount of scraping will remove the black parts!!.

"NO MMO" ?!?

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means..."

MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online

I'm curious as to why there are so many comments saying "I wouldn't buy/play an MMO". Not just here, but all over various forums.

Every time a new Halo game has been on the horizon, the one thing EVERYONE screamed for was a BIGGER multiplayer online experience, i.e. Bigger matchmaking games with more than 8v8 capacity.

So to those of you saying "NO MMO", do you actually mean "NO MMORPG", and you're just too lazy to type 3 more letters?
Or do you actually NOT want a bigger multiplayer experience?

And so what if Bungie DOES make an MMORPG? You really think they're so lazy that they'd just make a WoW clone?

Judging from what Bungie has already innovated - starting with Halo multiplayer, continuing thru Halo2 matchmaking and culminating with things like Firefight - I think it's safe to say that if Bungie's next game has a massive online multiplayer experience, it will NOT look like anything that already exists today, even if the acronym is similar.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I have withheld speculation on the new title as to genre, type, gameplay, etc.

I will say this. If Bungie is making something new, something really really new that has never been done before and it is as enticing, as enthralling, as immersive and as enjoyable as their past projects have been.... then if I have to pay a subscription to stay in that universe, I will have to evaluate my potential enjoyment of that universe against the fee (just like any other commercial transaction that I make).

I don't tend to make/take ideological stands when it comes to something as insignificant as entertainment. Calm down, but as enjoyable as the time is, as fun as it can be, as much time as I spend on it, it is still just entertainment and is less of a priority than actual necessities in life.

I'm sure they will make enough money off sales and merchandise.

If they make some kind of MMO and continue to work on adding things to it and improving it, and I don't mean superficial stuff, then I could understand paying a subscription fee.

To be fair, i'm sure that the game will be very good, really I do. But I'm sure that going in the direction of pay to play multiplayer (especially on the Xbox 360 as it already has it's own subscription based multiplayer) will make the multiplayer a lot less enjoyable, with the thought of your bank account being drained in the back of your mind. Now I'm sure what your trying to say is that Pay to play games are bad like i'm trying to say, but if Activision forces you to do this, then I think a similar thing to microsoft will happen (i.e. bungie saying Screw you guy's, I'm going home) and splitting away from activision

I take a similar stance on the subject, if it IS a subscription based universe then my continued membership/playtime of the game would depend more on the Cost/Fun ratio of the gameplay rather than just how fun it is.

I do agree about the Cost/Fun tradeoff. And the point of my original post is to start conversation on the possibility of a subscription based service from Bungie, not to take any kind of ideological stand. Even if Bungie's newness is some sort of pay to play, I shall give it a try. And to further note, the only current subscription fee I pay is my XBox 360 gold membership. I have yet to fall prey to this MMORPG craze going on and dont intend to.

Thanks for all the engaging comments so far.
