The Fanfic Contest is finally done! That’s right, after a long few months, the judges have read every single story and have decided on the winners. It was a long and perilious journey, but after much struggle, joy, tears, and the breaking of computers, we have finished!
Before I post the results, I have to say that if there was anything I’m disappointed about the contest, it was the number of disqualified entries there were. The word limits for each size grouping were set, and although there was some leniency, its something that some contestants simply ignored, which is not good for us or them. Makes all of us have to go and count each one to make sure it fits the qualifications, and that in itself for over 200 fanfic’s is a day’s job.
And a special thanks to BFO, who hosted the contest and took all the entries in for us to manage with ease. Although they recently switched hands, I think that tazmaniandude will make a good admin for the site.
Also, note that the judges, which were myself, papa john and psyched, were all allowed to post entries for the contest, although there would be no prize for us. And none of us judged our own work, just the same.
Now, on to the winners!
Short Stories
These fanfic’s were between 200-300 words, and were meant to test the skill of any writer to produce something that could be considered a story, and used the word limit as a bonus, not a chain to keep them down. Here is the winner:
* Halo: Betrayals, by Fragmaster T
There are also a few honorable mentions, in no particular order, which are:
* The Condemnation before the fall, by Kilroy
and
* Smoking Niko, by Martin
And
* Brothers, by Sir_Brilliant
Medium Length Stories
These fanfic’s were between 1,500 and 2,500 words, and are consistent with the length of an essay, or basically a few pages. It allows the length to divulge an entire storyline and plot, but also requires an intense amount of action, dialogue, emotion, etc. Here is the winner:
* Legacy, by Bronzey
And the honorable mention’s go to:
* Out Of Bounds: Cortana's Secret Paradox, by RVideo
* Turncoat, a Grunt’s adventure, by HBNpolarbear
Long Stories
I must say that these stories were the most difficult to judge, not because of the length and the time restraints the judges had, but also because there were so many good ones to choose from. I practically had to fistfight with the other judges (through the computer, of course) who got what. In the end, we had only one victor, but many, many honorable mentions.
These stories are meant to portray an entire theme, plot, and basically be one step down from any book one might read. They are the ones that take a lot of time, not only to write and read, but to understand, to comprehend the largess of the story. They have a certain flow that enables one to continue reading because it has their interest, and remarkably had us judges imbued in its mystical aura.
The winner is:
* Alpha team Black, by Kendall Davis
To tell the truth, the reason this one was picked above the others that you’ll see in a moment was because there was a distinctness to it that, although the rest were quite good, couldn’t match. It had a style that I have seen in many published books, and the dialogue, grammar, wording, flow, and feel were all there. Although I personally felt that the battle sequences were not as intense as they could have been, it was still a great read, and I recommend all to read it. Then again, I recommend everyone to read everything posted on this.
And the Honorable mentions:
* Dig In, by Papa john
* The Many Ghosts of Captain Keyes, by o1w
* Halo, at any Cost, by Cursus Honorum
* Defense of Earth, by Spaded
* Retaliation, by Rosco-128
* The Sangheili Prophecy, by Flamberge
That leaves us with the final category,
Poems
These poems display the love and affection that the writers have with Bungie’s work, and show their inspiration through the use of rhymes, special wording, and intriguing storylines. They had no length requirement and were meant for writers to express a more artistic side, which is exactly what we got. The winner is:
* Twas the Night before Halo, by Avenged Sayain
The honorable mentions are:
* Never get between a Spartan and his Cheesecake, by Kathryne Charles
* A MC Chear, by Kevin Albers
You thought that was it, right? For shame! We still have a few special fanfic’s we wanted to save for the end, just cause they were so damn…errr…something.
* Tale of a Grunt, by our own Gamejunkiejim
* Pimps at Sea, by Halifax
Both of these stories were NUTS, and I can tell you that if you have that weird feeling between your ears, you should check these two out.
Big thanks to psyched for helping us come up with the idea and find a site to host it, to BFO for hosting it, to OFG for helping out with it and to the contestants, who other than making our lives a living hell the last few weeks, have shown that there is still hope for the American education system. Unless all the winners aren’t American.
Now, for the prizes…a slight problem, but bear with me.
Because BFO has switched hands and now snowmanaxt, who was in charge but isn’t anymore decided to give prizes to the winners, the prizes will be delayed until we get an answer from BFO, which I’ll post immediately when I find out. If they say yes, then the prizes will go to the winners, and if no, then you better be content with being damned good writers!
If you would like to read more fanfic's, they are all posted here, at BFO
