So after hearing a few ideas that have been thrown around lately I thought I'd share my ideas for an update to the report system. As an example I'll use the current outbreak of late night spam.
Our first thought would be to get late night mods, however according to achronos it is very hard to find suitable mods. In addition you can't have volunteers being forced to stay up late to keep the forums under control. So for our discussion we can throw out the idea of new mods, even though I too agree it could help.
We know there are a lot of people who witness this spam; if you're on the flood late night people will make entire threads discussing it. So why is it that sometimes these posts don't even get enough reports to be collapsed? The user needs immediate gratification when it comes to the report system. This is where this idea mixes with the idea of ignoring a user. When you report the post it would immediately hide that post from you in addition to how it already works. Hiding the post would give the user an immediate sense of the system working and would encourage more users to report inappropriate posts. Having it hidden would make viewing the thread easier and would eliminate the possibility of accidentally clicking one of the links to a shock site.
To people who didn't report it, it would collapse like it does now after a certain number of people report it.

Basically the idea is to give the user something more tangible when they report a post to encourage the use of the report system.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I agree 100%

As a supplement, an "Ignore User", or something similar, button should also be created. So for someone who only posts links to shock sites, you would never have to see them. This 'ignore system' should not count as reports, because if you simply don't like someone, or the way they post, you should still be able to ignore them, without saying that they are breaking the rules. I would also love to have a 'show this post' button for those you have ignored. That way, if they start their own thread, even though you may not like them, you could still be able to read what they say.

That's just my thought on system. If both of those were implemented, this site would be much cleaner (at least to the users), and there would be less complaints which can clutter up the forums.

What about Mods that live in other countries?

The problem I see with instantly hiding reported posts is that to some, the report button would become a tool to block out disagreeing, but not necessarily rule-breaking, voices.

I would rather have a separate button to hide posts; perhaps next to the button that drops down the signature. It would fit right in, just flip the arrow over.

Also, I'd like the report system to automatically add links in heavily-reported posts to a list. Any new post with a link from that list would be automatically collapsed, but not banned. It would add domains to the list to include URL shortening in its entirety. We can live without it, right?
This list could be edited by moderators in case of a mistake.

Like the first post said, it would probably be best to combine the two features. Hiding the individual post when reported, and having a separate way of blocking all posts by a user.

We have mods form other parts of the world. You guys are missing the point, there's an entire thread about late night mods that you can use if you want to discuss that. Let's keep this to discussing ideas about the report system.

Ok then, What about a button that allows you to block the user, or a button that allows thread users to block anyone (bar bungie employees and ninjas) and if the thread users get kicked for no reason, then they can report the OP of that thread

there's a word that sums up what you said : discretion
If you don't reply to troll or spam threads, then they die off.

Those two features don't have the same purpose, though.

I may not want to see a certain post because it is irrelevant to a discussion I'm having with someone, but I don't want to have to report it to hide it.

IMO, hiding should not need reporting.

As for hiding all of a users posts...
Perhaps the hide button (I'm thinking an arrow next to the signature drop down that instead points upward) could bring up two options: hide and hide all.

The appearance of a hidden post is the same as a report-collapsed post, except with different text.

Before someone says...
Ignore it?... I want to remind them that posts that take many, many seconds to scroll could be very easily dealt with. You reach the top of the post (where the hide button would be) first, after all, when scrolling down.

This implement would be really handy against character-limit-line-break posts that may or may not contain shock site links.

Yes, it is possible to ignore the posts, but why not ignore them by putting them out of sight?

An "ignore user" option would be the first step to self-moderation.

also, ignoring the user would automatically report them or act as a report with less impact.

and vice versa, if you report a user, it would automatically ignore them.

OKAY REPORT AND IGNORE SHOULD BE PUSHED TOGETHER IN GREAT MATRIMONY

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I used to frequently support more moderators many years ago, but, now that I've rethought the issue, it isn't the solution.

It ties back into the immediate satisfaction issue. When a user sees spam, they ask "Why hasn't this been locked yet?" But a lot of these threads are just too young. It's unlikely that a moderator can get to it right away, no matter how many we have.

A moderators job is not to police the forums. They just have the ability. They are still Bungie/Halo fans, and deserve the ability to participate in general discussion too. Unfortunately, everyone sees their words as having more weight, which discourages their general posting habits. Thus another reason why popcorn moderators would hurt the community instead of help.

I like the proposed idea, though. Only affects the unique users experience, and not everyone else. You can't abuse it anymore than the current system can be abused, as far as I can see.

I could be wrong though. There's always that chance.

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

This would be a good idea, maybe also add a feature where you cant quote a post after a certain amount of reports?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Well it would prevent more threads being made about late night spammers...So I'll take it!

Or at least disable the links if someone does quote it.

Halo: CE Anniversary Achievement Idea
C-C-C-CANNON BREAKER!
Let Sgt. Johnson die on Halo.

I almost thought this was the same idea as the thread I posted ten minutes ago, but I'm glad it is not. ^_^

I love this idea man. If someone does a quote pyramid or a thousand links to John Cena, this system will hide those annoying posts and help us participate in the thread without being burdened. Great idea!

I didn't even consider the quotes while thinking of this; that certainly would make it more useful.

A good idea. I thought the WebTeam was actually looking into implementing this, they just had not had time yet.

Perhaps we'll get this eventually. I think it would be immensely helpful to have a general ignore button.
