Subject: Why does everyone hate on Halo Wars?

If you don't like RTS games, then don't play them.

I loved HW, as I love most RTS games that I play (DUNE:200, Age of Mythology, Starcraft, Dawn of War: II, Starcraft II, and many more).

Halo Wars a a good story that added to the universe. It showed how the Human/Covenant war started, and had some alright characters. While they [the characters] may have been cliched, they still felt real-ish.

I think the main reason people don't like it is because it's an RTS game for a console. Also because it ISN'T an FPS game.
If it had come out for PC, I think it would have done much better.

I really like RTS games, though I am absolutely terrible at them. I think the major quarrel is that it was on the Xbox, and not PC. In many people's eyes, RTS games belong on the PC as it is far easier to control things. I agree, having played several RTS games on both PC and Xbox. The PC ones always came out on top.

As for the lore it brought to the Halo universe, it was very interesting. It introduced many new characters and a background story going back even further than Reach.

I happened to enjoy it. As a matter of fact, I started playing it again recently. I don't like many strategy games, but Halo Wars was pretty fun.

"but you already knew that, I mean, how couldn't you?

Only when no Human brick is left atop another, shall we be satisfied with your destruction.

The very poor control system is certainly part of it, as is the lack of any real depth to the gameplay.

It would have been better if they had given us a proper RTS on the PC rather than a stripped-down RTS on the xbox.

I like it, though I think it does have some issues. Scarabs with about a million engineers? WTF is that.

Welcome to bungie, you have no rights. play nice!

One factor is that some people don't even seriously try to learn how to play the game.

I haven't seen you in a while dropship.

Spartan 383

I hear more people saying that people hate Halo Wars more than actual people who hate Halo Wars. I love Halo Wars for the story most of all.

  • 08.10.2011 10:04 AM PDT

It should be on the PC.

  • 08.10.2011 10:05 AM PDT

I hate it because most people consider it canon. It wasn't made by Bungie, so it shouldn't be considered canon. There are too many breaks made in the story, and it doesn't sit well with the others.

I don't care if its a good game or not. It might be. But it's no Halo game.

That's why I dislike it. Hell I barely even consider Reach canon, considering that the entire Bungie staff seems to have been drunk and clinically depressed during its creation.

2.stop dick riding bungie

This. And where, precisely, did you see a break in canon?

Scandinavian Master Race!

The complainers are probably terrible at Halo Wars so they trash it.

question everything...truth has no pedigree

I had fun playing Halo Wars.

It had enough replay value for me to keep playing till I got all the achievements except the one you get for advancing to general rank on XBL. I thought the story was decent, the controls were reasonable, and there were lots of campaign and muliplayer maps to play on.

But I did get sick of hearing "All units!" so much, as did my wife.

Jesus man, you might want to think about taking Halo a little less seriously.

< Insert witty comment/joke here >

Benjamin!

I've heard no hate for the game from any of my Halo Wars playing friends and there's no hate for it from myself either. Admittedly, the gameplay lacked depth for an RTS, but I thoroughly enjoyed the campaign, and the cutscenes were of a very high standard. It's a better game than most people give it credit for.

Bos primigenius taurus feces.

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings about your precious RTS game.

Anyway:

Vehicles we've never heard of? Not just one or two experimental ones, but literally almost every Halo vehicle has an improvement that is never in any of the books or the OT. Am I supposed to believe that these vehicles and technologies that are so very common in the Halo Wars campaign just completely disappeared in the 20 years between Wars and CE?

Imagine this, Earth, 2653. For a hundred years the entire Human race has been captivated by the story of a (enhanced) man and his artificially intelligent girlfriend/mother saving them from the clutches of eternal damnation almost singlehandedly, and ultimately lost their lives in the process. John is a legend, an exemplar hero that all of humanity praises.

Then one day, a colony cruiser shows up, and the crew come down to earth to debrief.

"Yep, back on dis dere sheel wurld them dun aliens was gonna yayk some big-azz fleet of shiny ships and complettly derstroy teh hooman rayce. but we fought dem and den put a big ol reeaktur in the thing and deh forge guy dat kilt teh arbitdur wit a cheep azz eye gouge blewd it up and derstroyed all teh sheeny shipz teh aliens was gonna steel and uze teh kill us."

So unbeknownst to the remainder of the human race, who has been idolizing this legendary hero for a hundred years, finds out that they really owe all the adoration to this crew of BK randy's who swoop in and steal all of the chief's glory.

It takes away from the epic victory story of the Chief's final triumph, which I feel takes away from the story as a whole.

1.the game takes place at the start of the war which is 27 years before halo CE. The vehicle were made pre-covenant and deemed inadequate which is why they they were discontinued (along with being experimental). And we have no book based on pre covenant humanity.

2.um john is only 1 of the roughly 600 or so spartans that fought the covenant. funny because any spartan could have done what chief did.

John-117 is a hero in this Universe to be sure. But many many people sacrificed to help him succeed in his mission. He didn't do it alone. Wars are never won by any individual effort; not in the real world and not in any imagined ones that I can think of.

The Spirit of Fire crew did their duty. And they will be most deserving of any accolades that come their way if anyone ever finds out about what they did.

I'm English. I have played and completed every Halo game so far. I have read every Halo book except the Forerunner Saga and Glasslands. I am an active member on The Flood. I started (by mistake) the Vs. Thread crisis of 16/4/11 (or 4/16/11 for you Americans). My real gamertag is FLAMELASHER. Those from Halo Waypoint may know me as AllegingOrb02.

um john is only 1 of the roughly 600 or so spartans that fought the covenant. funny because any spartan could have done what chief did.

Then why didn't they? Hm? Luck is what Cortana uses as the criteria for choosing John. John was just lucky enough to be he one spartan that could achieve victory. Every other SPARTAN lacked that mystical quality. John was the only one.

Fanboy opinion? I like the story as it is without Wars in it. Does that make me a fan? Yes. Am I a male? Yes. So "fanboy" could be an accurate descriptor of me in my relation to the Halo Universe. Am I working off my opinion? Yes. I won't disagree with that.

um because bungie wanted john to be the main character, he didn't do anything spectacular during the entore trilogy despite what the kiddies think. Any other spartan II or III could have done what he did.
