How long has Marty been with Bungie? And does he actually have a part in "creating" the universe (establishing what is/is not canon)?

I mean, I know he has to know the story in order to create the appropriate music, but does he actually come up with stuff, or just receive information from guys like Robt McLees, Staten and Jason Jones?

Just to be clear, I'm talking about his contribution to the Halo universe, not Bungie's new IP.

I believe he's been with Bungie full-time since 1999, but did work on producing Myth II's soundtrack previously (so '97 to '98 too).

And does he actually have a part in "creating" the universe (establishing what is/is not canon)? I mean, I know he has to know the story in order to create the appropriate music, but does he actually come up with stuff, or just receive information from guys like Robt McLees, Staten and Jason Jones? Also I think he, along with everyone else at the studio, has a say in the direction the games could/should take, but I don't think he'd be considered a necessarily a canon-establisher; more of a "well, here's my take on it". Discussion is a good thang.

As a voiceover-director, I'd say he might have a say in fleshing out the characters. Most of the time, the way it tends to work in production is you have your writers and designers show the rest of their team what they're shooting for, often in detail, then having the rest of the team work on top of that, discussing and iterating along the way until everyone is happy with something.

If a Grunt has a sticky stuck to his head, and no one is around to see or hear it, does it still run in circles screaming,"Get it off, Get it off !"?

A.K.A. Queso Man

Well being the Audio Director, I'd say that's a huge part of how things work. How things look isn't everything. How things sound... well that's Marty's department.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Halo would have never been the same without Marty. You can say Marty is one of the most important persons to contribute to Halo.

of course. He has to read the script, know the story, and know the atmosphere intended for the game to make his music, otherwise it's just music put into a game.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Marty's beautiful music is a base of inspiration for Halo and other Bungie games.

Rule number 1 of being a game developer: If its not in your job description, you're still gonna have to do it.

Even the artists help the programmers and vice versa. To appeal in the game market as an employee you need to be able to help them in all aspects. Since Marty has been around for 12 odd years, I would say hes been helping out with the story a bit.
