Enemy of my enemy's enemy is still me enemy. Get it?
Halo 2 was the best and most balanced Halo game to date. The only issue in the multiplayer were glitches, cheating, and host advantage.
The BR was extremely powerful on host. But off host, it functioned just like the BR on Halo 3 so it seemed balance. Not to mention, duel wielding was amazing and actually useful. The maps were by far the best Halo has ever had and not even remakes on Halo 3 and Reach can do them any glory.
It wasn't perfect but it was definitely the most fun.
Edit: I didn't like Halo 3 as much because the AR might as well have been a shotgun (4 bullets then melee for a kill, weak at any other range) and because every gun became much weaker except the BR, which stayed the same (duels lost power, plasma pistol had almost no tracking, rocket launcher lost homing, etc). The only weapon that actually gained power was the needler.
I don't like Reach as much because I feel that the game has lost its fast paced and balanced feel. Grenades are nukes and you move to slow to get out of the way in time, bloom adds luck to battles (it was a good idea, just implemented badly), vehicles now have health rather than reflecting damage on player, rank was removed.
I hope if anything, Halo 4 is balanced more like 2. I want fast movement speed, armor ability PICK UPS, (not loadouts) balanced weapons (no bloom), lock on rockets (no spartan laser), duel wielding (with a duel spawn as secondary weapon), and maps that are interactable (ex: gate switches, falling stalagtites, traps, etc)
