Subject: Why do people consider SPARTANS ruthless, mindless killing machines?

It baffles me. In Ghosts of Onyx doesn't Halsey (or was it Kurt?) say that they decided NOT to do this? The SPARTANS were chosen based, not only on their physical traits, but their mental traits as well, meaning they were the prime example of a perfect human being. They had all the best traits of humanity distilled into them. If there is anything they are NOT, it is mindless killing machines.

Master Chief only seems this way because he is the quiet type, he likes to let his actions do the talking for him, and even then, he is quite talkative in Halo 3. Just because one chooses not to speak does not mean one is mindless or devoid of their humanity. SPARTANS valued their humanity, why else would they fight? Why then, would they care so much about one another?

SPARTANS ARE PEOPLE TOO! >:(

They are not. Read the books. John actually seems to have more personality than most others.

I'm not sure you understand what I said, I'll shorten it. I am confused that you find others that say Spartans are mindless killing machines, for I have not heard anyone claim this.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Because Spartan's only talk openly between themselfs and Halsey and Mendez. Pretty much no one else gets in the inner circle of the Spartan's.

Everyone see's them as cold, killing machines. And they arent all wrong. Killing machines they are, but cold, they are not. Spartan's kind of have the same dilemma like Gage had in Dirt, was it worth to waste energy and time making new friends when they could just die all of a suddenly? That's why Sgt. Johnson was the Master Chief's only friend. He had survived since Reach all the way through untill the end of Halo 3. And you saw that the Chief was deeply hurt when Johnson died. Spartan' perfer not to have these emotional weaknesses that could later effect their performance on the mission. Even death's of Spartan's were put aside during missions.

Because people are stupid and only know the very basics of the Program's training and believe that because the SIIs were taught to really control their emotions that they should thus be nothing more than cold, heartless, ruthless, merciless killing machines with no soul or humanity to speak of.

In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Dangerous. Ruthless. Capable of quite a bit of destruction.

Is that much different?

I guess the most an average marine would hear about the Spartans is how they single handedly take out a platoon of enemy soldiers. I'm not sure if morale would be lifted as much if you found out that a group of Spartans were making a comedy club, but who knows.

They're not mindless .. Where'd you hear that? They are killing machines because they are trained with advanced techniques at a young age that an ODST probably would learn way later in life in his career.

I only consider myself if I was a Spartan, very skilled in hand to hand combat and very strategic so I know what I'm getting myself into and out.

It would for me, for that would mean that they are normal people after all and if they can do that, so can I!.

no ruthless definitely doesn't come to mind when i think of a Navy SEAL.
The best of the best is all i think. that doesn't mean their ruthless.

ruth·less
Adjective: Having or showing no pity or compassion for others: "a ruthless manipulator".

Emile wasn't really a Spartan though. He was a toy soldier just like the rest of the S-III's.

It shouldn't baffle you at all, really. If people read the books, they know the Spartans aren't mindless. Just because they follow orders, that doesn't make them mindless either.

Jeez. You take it personally so easily.

Cannon fodder. Well, they were valuable, but their original purpose was cannon fodder.
And compared to II's, they were toy soldiers.

High losses =/= Cannon fodder.

The guy who said 'Innie propaganda' isn't far wrong. There's also an element of UNSC propaganda there too, I'll wager. Can't have your tools of Imperialist control seeming too warm and fuzzy can you?

There's also the fact that the Spartans have been in 30 odd years of warfare, and (largely) survived. Humanity has taken a beating over these 30 years, but the loss ratio doesn't transmit to the Spartans. This goes some way to separating them from their perceived humanity.
