I believe this idea might have been thrown around a while ago, but I thought I'd bring it up again because I think it's a good one.
There should be a list of groups you've joined and are waiting to be accepted in. If you happen to try to join a group that is dead you'll always be in the queue and it takes up one of your group spots. The list should show groups you're waiting acceptance in and should allow you to pull yourself out of the queue.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

That feature should already be included.

However, it is some responsibility of the user to differentiate a dead group, from an active one.

That sounds like a fairly useful addition. However, can't you take yourself out of the waiting list of the group manually by accessing the group page? It would be much more convenient if you could see them all together though.

Only after we ban Bricypoo.

How are you supposed to know if a group is dead with out seeing it's forums? Sure you could say because of all the old News articles but that doesn't mean anything. There are tons of active groups that don't update those.

I don't think so, if you can do that I wasn't aware.

Do you just randomly join groups that you picked out of a hat? Most of the time, you know what a group is about before you submit a request to join.

You should gather some information about private groups before you try to join them. Especially if you are near the 'group limit.'

And if you are truly unsure if a group is dead or not, you simply PM one of the members.

Joining small random groups is how I have met some of the coolest people on here. (in my opinion) I go through and check out many different groups. I look for those groups with great people out to have fun.

If I'm bored with my current groups I'll randomly join an interesting looking group if it has a decent number of members without really knowing what I'm getting myself in to.
