Subject: Should default quoting be limited to the outermost quote?

For the sake of brevity, I propose that quoting a post which contains a quote with nesting deeper than one level, have its inner quotes removed and only the outermost quotes remain.

Example:

432a1a2b1b
Quoting the above post would result in:

4
Thereby cutting down on mega-posts, quote-pyramids, etc... and focusing the current reply on the latest quoted content.

No way!

Most of the time what was quoted in the quote that you're quoting is the relevant quote for your quote to quote.

This is quote a bad idea.

I only hate quoting pyramids to an extent.

"Quote pyramids" help create a little chat box. If the quotes that we're relevant we're taken out of the reply, it could possibly cause the conversation to "circle back" to something that had already been discussed and resolved.

4 should be default but there definitely be an option to quote more if it's important to the discussion.

No further back than 2, though. That gives you 4, 3, and 2 to play with which should be all a user would really need. I'm not sure if there's a limit to quotes as I haven't tested it, but let's say we have one that goes up to 10.

I'm certainly not suggesting you quote all the way back to two; only the last reply and the two prior at most. In this case, 10, 9, and 8.

I don't think it should be necessary to go back any farther than that; if it is, the person should go back and find that post and reply directly to it.

Or shorten it and have an option to "Show All Quotes". + and - will be used and it will always show the last 2 quotes unless you hit the +, in which it will then drop down the whole quote.

Isn't that why we have threads to view the history of the relevant discussion?

In larger threads that becomes difficult.

Perhaps a few additional options like

"Quote only this post" would be more helpful.

It'd look a lot neater no doubt, but if I were to just hop into a thread to see only that, I couldn't really pick up from where everyone else is in the argument.

No.

Sometimes while in the middle of replying to someone, I'll forget certain points that have already been discussed and skim over the 'quote pyramid' as a little reminder.

Too much of a hassle going back into the thread and looking through all of the replies.

I am against this idea. I love quote pyramids. Sometimes they are necessary.

Another way to cut down on mega-posts would be to see if the forum can be revised to limit how many lines of blank space there is between lines of text; I'm sure everyone's seen the posts where someone will hit enter a dozen or more times to make a huge post that in the end only contains one sentence, or worse, a single word.

No more than two spaces between lines of text would be good.

Of course, that invites these people to just spam something like...
A
A
A
[continue twenty times]
[insert singular sentence, word, or insult here]

...but I don't think any method is going to be 100% perfect at cutting down the trash.

It's already restricted to five quote tags. Is it really necessary to restrict it more? Plus I find it funny when someone makes a witty post and makes a pyramid of just that quote.

Bye.

I think it would be very handy to cut quote pyramids down. But I think the outer and inner-most should posts both should be quoted. It's quite often that when quoting multiple users you are agreeing/disagreeing with the latest user in context of the original quote in the pyramid.

Changing this:
432a1a2b1b

To this:
4
2a1a2b
1b

This is much tidier and it allows me to refer to the innermost points without the mass confusion.

In the course of writing this, i've looked at the word "Quote" so much that it has stopped making sense.

I'm telling you guys...if you simply started quoting the right way you wouldn't have such a hard time reading through pyramids.

I agree. I hate seeing posts with more than 3 quotes in them. I always tend to short them down manually. If you are worried about seeing what the person you are quoting quoted about, I don't think it takes much more than a scroll around the thread to find out what he was talking about.

Definitely this. If it is limited to 1 quote then it would make things easier to read. Especially when you multi-quote different people who put what they type on top of the quote.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

A neat feature would be to have only the post you quoted shown, and have the others 'hidden'.

You could then hit the little drop down icon, like for signatures, and the next post that was quoted would be shown, and then the next post, and on and on.

So to the user, it could look like a single quote, an entire quote pyramid, or something in between.

That's just my view on the quoting system.

I think Daz has got a good point. I would like to see it anyway. Anything that cuts down on the quote pyramids and people going C-c-c-combo breaker can only be a good thing right?
