Subject: Use a game controller for Halo PC?

I just started playing Halo PC after a long and glorious career playing Halo and Halo 2 on XBOX. My problem is that now that I'm on the PC, I've got to relearn how to control the ole Masterchief using a mouse and keyboard (which is not my favorite choice). So far, I'm getting my butt kicked online trying to get used to this new configuration. I've talked to other gamers online about this and most seem to agree that Mouse and Keyboard rocks the party 9 times out of 10, but are there any gamers out there using a particular game controller with any amount of success? I need some feedback on this because I just bought a game controller online, but it sounds like nobody out there actually uses them at all. Any thoughts?

Well, you pretty much answered your own question. I'm sure you can get good with a controller on the pc, but like you said, 9 times out of 10 you will get pwned. I went through this struggle when I first entered the pc gaming world, but stuck with the keyboard/mouse combo.

You will get used to it in time, but it's not going to happen right away. Just think, the time you spend with your new controller could be time spent learning the keyboard and mouse.

After I got used to not using a controller, I upgraded my keyboard, gaming mouse, and a gaming pad.....I will never go back.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the help. Nice to see some others have had a similar struggle out there. I know most everyone *prefers* the keyboard/mouse set up, I just wonder if there are any success stories out there of people who are using a controller (or if they just get owned by those who don't).

It's matter of preference. I've heard of users who've become online demi-gods with a controller tweaked just right for their use. But it requires, for most, a lot of fine-tuning and configging before it comes out just right. And remember, this will be different from Halo2, in that H1PC don't come with any sort of auto-aim for controller users.

Controllers do come with advantages, such as force feedback and true dual-wielding (I've racked my brains and still don't know how Bungie's going to handle dual-wielding for H2PC).

I recommend the keyboard and mouse, though, since that's not just the norm for PC games, but because sometimes, you just really can't beat the flexibility of a mouse/keyboard.

well, I've found I'm getting slightly better with the keyboard/mouse config, especially as I start getting used to it. I just miss the ole two joystick goodness that was XBOX. The controller I'm getting is a lot like the xbox controller (complete with dual triggers and rumble feedback). I'll give it a shot. Anybody else out there able to cap the other guy first with a controller?

my friend borrowed Halo from another friend and bought an adaptre and used his x-box controller on the pc he turned out baetin everyone but it was really cheap and it's a lot funnerr and better to use mouse/keypad because u have more buttons and more flexibility in what u do. That's just my opinion though

Like your name implies, you are obviously a noob. XD

Let's go, my keyboard and mouse versus your Xbox 360 controller. No seriously. Let's go.

Honestly, unless you have callibrated your controls for maximum effect or have some kind of aimbot, you do not stand a chance.

I second that, Me15ter.

I can understand if people struggle from a controller to a keyboard and mouse, but frankly I've never had this problem. Like a person who is raised by a Jewish father and a Christian mother I have been raised by a controller and keyboard.

Ya there are controllers for comps... but they aren't the best for fps... unless you want to aim at a still target. Although either way you decide to go takes practice and have ytheir ups and downs. a down with a mouse is that eventually you'll have to pick it up to recenter your mouse.... but that's the only downside.

Side scrollers and top down scrollers are good for controllers.

Are you suggesting that Jewish fathers have control issues?

JK

Personally, I was doing miserable with the keyboard and mouse; I hated it. I modded an old Xbox controller to input into the laptop through the USB. It worked so much better for me; I actually did well.

But, it's all subjective.

Keybpard+mouse is the master combination. U just have to set the controls close together. A control is slow and pitiful. A guy I met playing Halo online was getting pwned by noobs 'cause he was using a control. Remember, the mouse is as fast as the hand.

so why not just up the sensitivity on your game controller if its so slow? Any controller worth anything with be adjustable.....and talk about close buttons. I dunno, maybe I just hate the combo cause I hate holding my hand out there over the mouse and having to re-center all the time. Plus my controller has dual triggers, much like the ole XBOX controller.

Yeah, it's all subjective, like Incredibus said. But you have to admit- the keyboard and mouse is a very powerful configuration.

One advantage of the controller is the walk movement, if your game supports it, you can walk without having to lean on a shift button.

you could get used to it or just mod a xbox controller like i did its easy and worth it, If your used to a xbox controller like i am, just solder a USB cable to the male end of the controller and download the driver and bam! you got a xbox controler for your pc!!! Fully costomizable and you can adjust the movement sensitivety so yo can look and react quicker and you still can use it with your xbox. Im not saying the controller is better than the keyboard its entirely up to the prefrence of the gamer. I myself like the being able to strafe easier witch has saved my a $ $ plenty of times ant its easier to crouch and zoom, but again its entierly up to the prefrence of the gamer.

heres the adress for the plans i used if anyone is intrested theres a link at the bottom of this site for the driver.

I challenge everyone who says that a controller is better than mouse/keyb. Not kidding.

Name a time and a server. I'll be there.

I play with a controller and I do just fine. In my opinion it works just as well as the mouse and keyboard.

The controller doesn't stand a chance against the mouse. You simply can't be accurate using a thumb to aim. It works well on the Xbox because the game automatically slows down your crosshair (autoaim) over enemy targets. Try teamkilling and you'll realize how much your aim sucks when the game isn't helping you aim.

Not if your skilled with a tumbstick instead of a mouse. What then? You can still be accurate as you were with the mouse if you have been playing with a controller if you have a lot of experience with it. Why is everybody hatin' on the controller, anyways?

it's fine either way- you either train your hand/arm or you train your thumb.

ok so yesterday I got my Thrustmaster 2-in-1 controller in the mail (the one with the dual triggers like on xbox) and after some reconfiguration, i consistently landed in the top three for number of kills. Still some getting used to it, since the PC is a whole different animal (I NEED A NEW GRAPHICS CARD TO MAKE THIS SMOOTHER!!!), but I felt a lot more comfortable and I don't think this thing slowed me down at all.

And I'll be standing right by you, Ice Baby. I don't hate the controller- I love it- but when you play an FPS/RTS/MMORPG, the keyboard and mouse rules all.

When playing Halo PC you can practice a lifetime with a controller and you still won't beat someone who spent a lifetime using a keyboard and mouse. There are too many major limitations to what you can do with a controller.

You have to take your thumb off the analog stick to jump, melee, reload, swap or switch guns. Meleeing was hard to do on a moving target for this reason alone because you can't keep your view locked on someone while you melee. Halo 2 has lock on melees to fix this inherent problem. Sure you can change it to boxer settings but now it's hard to toss grenades accurately and almost impossible to stick a moving target. With a mouse you never have to relinquish look controls to press a button.

The mouse has a greater range of motion only limited by your desk space and reaction time. I play on a sensitivity of 3 and I can snap my mouse to quickly turn around or keep my palm planted on the desk while I make smaller adjustments by moving the mouse with my fingers. If you think about it I have two sensitivity settings I can instantly adjust to when I need to snipe or battle close range. With a controller it's harder to make fine adjustments to your aim because you're aiming with a thumb and the resistance on the stick makes it difficult to make slight adjustments quickly and precisely. Don't forget you need to deal with loose sticks too. Deadzones I think. Ever had to replace an old controller or made the transition to an Xbox 360 controller and your aim was bad? The resistance on the stick ruins your aim until you can readjust to it.

I don't hate the controller. I simply prefer using it in games where speed and pinpoint accuracy isn't a deciding factor. Like racing and platform games.

Fatso,

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I had no time and was too lazy to type it all out.

Good job ;-)
