For that matter, if a moderator goes missing for a long period of time as he did, should they be able to walk through the door and resume their optional responsibilities, or should they go through a sort of trial period?
Completely up to our hosts and (based on my observation) is handled in a case-by-case basis. Personality and history, circumstances and reasons for their departure, verification that they are still the account holder, and probably some straight-talk PM conversations between the member and the management as to their current abilities and intentions surrounding the job.
For example, if "daddy went out to get cigarettes and never came back" and then suddenly showed up 8 years later? I suspect it would take some serious conversation before he was sleeping in the master bedroom.
Every situation is different, every member is. There's no mathematical formula to handle human interaction.
