Subject: Tips and advice for Halo PC/CE

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice to help me improve at Halo PC multiplayer. Specifically regarding leading your shots. I'm fairly good with a mouse and keyboard, able to hold my own in most PC games (k/d slightly higher than 1, not impressive i know) but with the netcode that Halo PC has and my already lackluster skill with an m+k, i do find myself losing most fights or dying too much with the odd server where i do average in.

So i was wondering, does anyone have any advice on how far you have to lead your shot, mouse sensitivity or just any advice on improving accuracy with the mouse? Thanks in advance.

Although this may not always work, you could type in a realy long question and then while people are typing a response you kill them.

That is what my friend who sucks horribly at the game does. It works for him.

depending on your ping at the time, you will need to lead you shots at a different ammount typically a 150 ping will have you leading a fingers width on your screen if its not widescreen. you have to take consideration if the other player is walking closer, or further away from you, along with the actul horizontal movement. so if the player is going perpendicular to you, lead the fingers width, but if the player is moving diagonally to you, you have to make a bit of an educated guess compared to past experiances. the more you play, the better idea you get on how much to lead your shot
if your ping is over 350, i wouldn't play but thats what im used to. when it comes to sensitivity, i play at the 1, it keeps a more steady shot that way. i hope this helps, but the best way to figure out how much to lead at a particular time is trial and error

Something smells fishy...

With the pistol I usually lead my shots about 1 head or 1/2 a heads length from the head/body, of my opponent. That's with 66-100 ping. Sometimes more lead is needed sometimes less is needed.

Also, (you might know this already) it usually helps to space out your shots instead of shooting rapidly.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

For every 30 or so ping, lead about half a head ahead. Never hold the mouse button down. Always pulse-fire rapidly within red range, and time your shots further apart for long distance stuff.

Thankyou for the replies, i will use the advice :) i do have one final question, most servers i find have around 110 ping, it's the only game where my ping is over 100 but below 170. In other games it's around 20-30, is this just Halo PC, the servers, or my connection?

It all depends on where you live, and how fast your internet is. Assuming you live in central America, the closer a Halo dedi is to where your internet exchange is, the lower the ping. So, all American servers would have a ping of, say, 30-90. While any European servers would have a ping of 120-300.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I'm still trying to master leading shots. I see if someone has just started to move left, I have to lead less, like just on the corner of their head/body... if our pings are 100-ish. Changing my network settings in the game to high or T1 seemed to tighten up the lead.

Playing with projectile weapons like the laser and hagar in Nexuiz really helped teach me how to lead when I got back to Halo PC.

Still haven't mastered it, though. Still getting pizzowned at KNFr. Damn you...

Yeah unfortunately i live in the UK, so alot of the servers im guessing are Stateside so most are around 120-170 :/ however, i can adapt to the lag overtime, had one decent game earlier where the tips that everyone mentioned helped but i suppose i can only improve over time. Thanks for the help all.

Add me to your friends list if you haven't already. It's a lot more fun to play with people from The Maw and people I know than random noobs.

I've been playing off and on for around 5 years and every time I play now I usually get owned and really have to work hard to relearn leading my shots. I gets a bit frustrating, but its the only way to play Halo 1 online easily.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Leading is just one aspect to proper shooting in Halo PC.

A steady hand and rate of fire are just as important.

Aim directly onto your opponent, then lead and fire slowly. As far as how much to lead, that varies from server to server and you just have to figure it out each time. Generally speaking, people don't lead enough though in most situations.

Another important point people didn't remember is to listen for the "ping" tone that indicates a hit. You will better be able to track the "lead".

Another tip is to use your nades to move the enemy. If you throw a nade to their right they will ALWAYS start moving to the left. Aim in front of them, pop, pop, pop, dead.

Oh and it normally takes three shots to kill someone at full shields. 2 to drop shields and a final headshot. Since I can't shoot that straight I park a grenade under their nuts and then just pump one into their chest.

And the most vital tip of all. Make sure that your network settings are set accurately. After tweaking around with this is saw my lead reduced by at least half.

Sorry for the raised voice, it was necessary. ;)

So if you have the incorrect network settings in Halo PC, it affects your performance in game (ping and such?)

Check now, make sure your upload speed is matched accurately to halo's upload speeds in the network settings.
