The only way to fulfill your thirst for knowledge is to look into every piece of canon Halo media. Google is your friend.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

The Novels:

Ending of the war:
-The Fall of Reach
-The Flood
-First Strike
-Ghosts Of Onyx

Beginnings of the war:
-Contact Harvest
-Cole Protocol

Forerunner Saga:
-Cryptum
-Primordium (sp?)

They first 4 serve as the basic layout for the Halo Universe, novels like Contact Harvest serve as fill-ins if you want to know about the origins of the war and the likes and books like Cryptum and Primordium (I believe, not sure about the name) are set 100,000 years before the events of Halo but they serve to increase the knowledge of the Universe even more.

The Comics:

I'm not sure what comics may really help you as I've just read the novels, but they serve mainly as side stories, like the Bloodlines which deals with the Spartan Team BLACK and the likes.

343 also released Halo: Evolutions which is a collection of well crafted short stories, designed to fill out some of the universe a bit. I would really recommend it. They even made one of the shorts (The Mona Lisa) an animated comic which is worth watching.

Happy Reading! If you actually want to learn you will have quite a lot of it to do.

the graphic novels are VERY good
theres:
Halo: Bloodlines, about a group of S-IIs uncovering Forerunner tech
Halo: Helljumper, about Dutch and Romeo before the events of Halo 3 ODST
Halo: Uprising, about the events between Halo 2 and Halo 3
Halo: The Graphic Novel, a collection of short stories spread throughout the Halo Universe
