Subject: Canon explanation for Bases in Halo Wars.

I've gone back to playing Halo Wars lately, and I'm continuously bothered with trying to figure out: what is the canonical explanation for where the whole underground complex comes from when a firebase is placed? The above ground building part is explained so neatly, but then the underground complex and the whole area with building pads makes no sense. Actually in the Halo Universe (outside of the conveniences made for RTS play) where does the rest of the base come from? Ground troops construct the paved area around it? there is quick high-tech digging and construction equipment inside the station that is placed? Do workers come in the Station to build the rest quickly after it is placed? seriously, WTF? kills the believability of in-game events.

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

Most people write off Halo Wars gameplay as non-canon.

It has to be. In the cutscenes the Spartans don't have shields (as they should with Mk. IV armor) but in game they do.

Mk. IV doesn't have shields. Mk. V does.

EDIT: Never mind, I see what you're saying now.

Gameplay for wars has usually been considered non canon, except for the idea that some of the vehicles and other things "exist" in the Universe. But the story of course is more or less canon.

I've heard of certain aspects of it being non-canon, but not the entire gameplay.

Aspects being like the Shields on Spartans.

Gameplay is usually not canon. Kind of like how there aren't millions of Spartans, but in matchmaking they'll be fighting each other.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

The story of the game is canon, but certain aspects like the shields on the Spartan's aren't. It's balance.

  • 08.14.2011 7:08 PM PDT

Hmm. The story being canon, but the gameplay itself not being exact canon actually makes it all make way more sense to me now. I guess it often is that way with RTS games, come to think of it. Thanks, that stuff was plaguing my my mind in the halo universe.

While on the topic of gameplay issues in Halo Wars, it should be noted that the Visual Guide decided to take a crack at giving a canon explanation to the Spartans' shields. Apparently the shields were an experimental trial version prior to its widespread use in the Mk V.

I'll find the exact quote and page number in a bit and post back.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

I don't think gameplay is really ever considered canon for anything.

Cannon: The Spirit of Fire used it's old colonization ships to land military bases and facilities.

Gameplay: It taking 30 seconds without visible workers and involving magical appearing tunnels.

Well, I'd like to see how would you warp down an entire Covenant base in 2 minutes.

Anyway, gameplay =/= canon. You don't see a plasma pistol melting armor, do you?

Prototypes then, makes sense, they had to have field tested that tech first.

It's obvious that the UNSC use giant moles to make the tunnels for their fire bases.

I dont see Halo Wars as canon at all. None of it followed what had already been written or done. Its just another non-memorable game to me.

Has Gameplay ever been canon in any Halo game?

Really? Miserable... Why because you didn't like the game? The story effects the universe less then Reach did (I Love Reach By The Way) It is a full new story and the only inconsistencies are for BALANCE, you know because it is a GAME.
See my point?

Maybe it was like the description of Jorge's chest thermos in the armory?

"Prototype energy shield developed for M IV armor."

The exact quote can be found on page 119 (Mk V Entry) of the Visual Guide.

Under a box that is labeled "Energy Shields" the following is said:

Energy shielding was a key feature of Mark V, although other Spartan squads had field-tested prototypes of this technology as early as 2531.
------

The underlined part is what I'm referring to. It's pretty clear that the squads who field tested prototype shielding as early as 2531 is in reference to Spartan Team Omega (which included the then Red Team of the time).

I suppose that because the bases are so big compared to a singular infantry unit, everything could be on the surface and in the building.

Then explain why the troops come out of a tunnel leading underground...
