Subject: Forum Ninjas: A Psychological Discussion

Left here a long time ago.

Well, of course the mods get more attention, OP. Should be obvious why, but I may as well state it anyway.

Bungie is literally the only game dev I've seen whose online community clearly identifies its moderators. You don't have to deal with some shadowy secret-police types whose only human interaction comes in the form of a banhammer. Forum Ninjas are actually part of the community -- they're a human presence. Generally speaking, they're the best among us, who chose and were chosen to help out.

The Forum Ninjas earned their positions through intelligence and maturity, and they are recognizable human beings who interact with the community, so it makes sense that their opinions would carry more weight.

Agreed but they have a reason to be worshiped, the vast majority of them had a big role in some our favorite video games.
So, you just got finished telling everyone to treat ninjas like normal, everyday people, because that's what they are, and then you moved to this contradiction?

By your logic, considering ninjas play a big role in some people's favorite website, isn't that justification in itself for them to be worshiped?

I mean, I hate people that constantly quote ninjas in some pathetic attempt to move higher up on the ladder (a few notable ones posted in this thread already), but I mean, you can't talk down to people, and then turn around and say something like this.

No. I didn't mean it like that. If anything I meant it to be slightly sarcastic.

They shouldn't be worshiped, obviously, but the awe-factor of seeing a Bungie Employee on here is greater than that of a forum ninja. Forum Ninjas are in fact normal members of the community who just happen to have the ability to ban rule breakers/moderate the forums.

Bungie Employees are much more than regular members of the community.

I'm saying I understand more when someone freaks out over a Bungie Employee, yet I still disagree with the practice of doing so.

Especially in game forums like the Halo: Reach one where Forum Ninjas are less prevalent and don't post as often, posters seem to freak out at the mere sight of a ninja
I'm not sold on this. In the Reach forum, I get about the same ratio of agreement as before. If I said BR/AR starts are monotonous/imbalanced then you bet people won't suddenly change their mind based on the frequency of light beaming into their eyes. Basically, people in the Halo: Reach forum really do not care about your title on some website (which I like).

Because a lot of Reach forum users aren't familiar with the forums and its structure, a common response might be "Who's that idiot, and why is his text orange?".

One of the main reasons I kind of prefer the more disorderly forums over this one is that there's no tight-knit community where people post mainly to make eachother laugh, and there's no real heirarchy. In the Reach forum, you'd struggle to find a Heroic member, nevermind an admin. It's more about a simple trading of opinions between strangers (although the increased unfamiliarity tends to make people act less mature), rather than friendly banter between an extended group of friends.

There's some truth to what you say though obviously. I'm guessing that's the desired effect too when it was changed, so that people take more notice when a Ninja chimes in to keep a thread civil.

Subject 1:
I like to mess with the Forum Ninjas, they're actually pretty laid back members of the community, unlike some of the members.

Subject 2:
Forum Ninjas are seasoned members of the community, they generally know more about some things than another member would. You should always do some research before you just up and agree with someone.

Subject 3:
Not much to say about this except to refer to my answer to subject two.

^ Large Quote, but I do agree with Nate here. Furthermore, I recognise many of the names associated with Orange text, so there is a familiarity side to this equation also.

The Ninja is intended to be a beacon for the community. They are designed to stand out, hence why they tend to draw a lot of attention. That I tend to find useful, informative, intelligent, witty and or entertaining posts synonymous with Orange Text isn't really of any surprise. I usually know what to expect from Orange Text, the same as I know what to expect from COPS.

Ninjas are human, in fact, most people are [I think] and they make mistakes, but I know that if I need an assist with something -forum wise- to look for Orange Text, mostly because that is their function.

It's the same as asking about Mythic members and the quality of content you might expect from them [As more experienced members of the community] but then again, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Sorry if a similar post exists in this thread, but I came in all guns blazing and obnoxious and decided not to read beyond the first eight posts.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

I don't really care about other peoples reaction's to a moderator's post. Because over the mask of the internet, it is often difficult to correctly discover whether the person actually does agree with the admin or not. Even if, the person did not actually agree with the admin but pertended to for whatever reason, what is the harm done? It's an internet forum for a gaming community...

I personally, quite like certain reading admin's posts because believe it or not, some are actually pretty wise and intilligent people.

I guess what the mods get is what we get, but stepped up a bit. Some people agree or disagree with 'normal' members, but because a ninja's post stands out, they're more noticeable.

I don't really care if they're a ninja or not, I'm in groups where there are ninjas, but because they don't have the atomic orange text, you forget about their positions.

They deserve a bit of special treatment considering they made the games we all know and love. Though that treatment does not include worship.

If you want to make psychological diagnosis's, please take a seat.

Subject 1 - forum Ninjas are a big deal, everyone knows that. Especially Qbix because he's so fat. I mean, Recon has age on his side, but still the others are all similar - hence why their decisions carry so much weight.

Subject 2 - You've seen what they look like, and as the ancient proverb says 'wisdom is measured in the rolls of men' - clearly they are incredibly wise, and the wise always carry more valuable opinions.

Subject 3 - would you not want to suck up too, to these great beings?

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I'd say that Skibur summed up everything ever with his 'wood comes from trees' post.

As to the 'everyone agrees with moderators' argument, that's true to an extent. People want what they can't have. (Remember Adam and Eve?) Being a forum moderator is a restricted title, and therefor, people want it.

When someone wants something, they act nicer and are more willing to follow someone who has already achieved their goals. If you were an aspiring young football player, you would accept an NFL hall of famer's advice and follow it, almost blindly with no research or reference point.

Why would you not be "too fond of the moderators"? Unless you get banned a lot for breaking the rules when you think you didn't, but in that case... um... read the rules?

There's literally almost no reason to dislike the Ninjas.

I see what you're getting at here, i.e., the Forum Ninjas receive too much attention and, perhaps, too much respect beyond what is warranted.

Can't say I completely disagree with you. But I think you forget about a couple of important things. First, Forum Ninjas are frequently disagreed with, especially in this forum. In fact, I think any person who's been around this forum for more than a few months would agree that there are some specific users here who go out of their way to belittle and disagree with the opinions of Forum Ninjas and administrators whenever they are posted. In fact, many of the Forum Ninjas know and fully expect that they will be disagreed with (sometimes vehemently) anytime they post in this forum.

I also think that -- partly because of the above antagonists -- you aren't giving enough credence to the way some of the Forum Ninjas tend to carefully craft their posts and are respected for the way they post. Indeed, users are selected to become Forum Ninjas at least partially on this basis. It's right there in our "Moderator FAQ" article in HFCS.

Well-argued points and thoughtfully reasoned opinions will receive agreement no matter who they come from, and the fact that a person who posts in this way receives agreement does not necessarily hinge on the color of that person's text.

So saying that all Forum Ninjas get a lot of agreement might be ignoring the possibility that particular Forum Ninjas may just make really good points that people tend to agree with.

Other than that, I see what you're saying and would tend to agree, but I don't really see why you're saying it. Are you trying to get people to propose solutions or ways to change this?

for some reason after reading this i really want to agree with Foman here on this one...
