Was there ever an explanation for why the human weapons and vehicles in Halo seem unreasonably anachronistic? Or is that just part of what makes Halo Halo.

"I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.
I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart."

I can almost guarantee that in real life,in 500 years our weapons wont be near as good as perceived in the halo-verse.

That's false statement. Modern weapons are better than halo verse UNSC weapons... Have you even researched the modern weapons compared to UNSC weapons?

You forgot that BODY ARMOR also advances with the weapons of the age, and the fact that during the majority of those years, more scientific research(and funding)went into colonization, NOT warfare.

In all reality, we probably won't have biological bodies in half a millennium.

I doubt modern weapons are able to link up with a soldier's HUD now.

Perhaps that is where funding went into: instead of improving weapons, they decided to improve soldiers.

Sigh, the AR fires huge rounds, with almost no recoil and has a built in electronics suite to boot. I think just that electronics suite makes it superior to any modern day weapon.

SMG: 60 round clips of caseless amunition.

Warthog: Runs of Hydrogen, it can convert any water source into fuel while in the field.

I'm so damn tired of people saying "LOL HALO IS RETARDED BECAUSE THE GUNS SHOOT SIDEWAYS LOL" read the books to get a good sense of actual weapons

They did improve weapons, there is only so much you can do with bullets...

Also, yeah Body Armor has improved significantly, in Contact Harvest the impact plating worn by Johnsons team resists multiple pointblank rounds with out even being damaged.

That actually seems like an acceptable explanation, being that Halo is just a work of fiction like any other it doesn't need PERFECT reasoning for every little thing. If Tech was focused on colonization, weapons advancement could have all but halted for at least a while, plus there is only so much you can do with guns.
No doubt, most of the weapons are very advanced, but I just can't help but feel that in 500 years, things like the accuracy of the Assault Rifle, and the SMG should be way better, or that we will have more directed energy weapons (ie lethal lasers), Or that ground vehicles won't still be using wheels, ie. personal transportation will be something more like what it is in Mass Effect, if you will.
....there's still that freaking pump-shotgun, though...

I had no idea warthog runs on Hydrogen! I always wondered when messing around in Forge World "hmmmm, I wonder what would happen if I ran out of gas?" LOL

I got four letters... NOVA bomb.

Yea, they have plenty of stuff that is proper for 500 years in the future, like the mac cannon and nova bomb (which is bad ass!), but what bothers me is that they then still have stuff like the SMG, modern-esque pistols and a Pump Shotgun which only seem really high-tech as far as the reticle uplink thing. A lot of that stuff seems like it belongs 100 years in the future, not 540.

The accuracy can be slammed into the "gameplay balance" area.

And yes, for a large portion of those 500 years, there was zero conflict. Aka, zero weapon development/research.

And yeah, somebody did make a post which explained how the assault rifle was better then an AK-47, it got ignored however.

I read it, and I believe it, ie. even the lesser weapons in Halo are generally superior to modern day weapons, but not by that much that it fits so far in the future.
I've seen that most players chalk up the pump shotgun to gameplay balance, and I think that makes sense, but that doesn't explain its actual existence in the universe, (maybe a safety feature?) I figure the makers could just make something up lol.

"There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe."
Gospel of John, 1:1-7

When there is little to no combat in 500 years, there will be less of a need of advancement in weaponry. Anyway, all the different wars that did occur in that 500 year portion seemed to be various rebellions, and since rebellions usually just buy off old weapons instead of manufacturing and producing better ones, there is little to no need to make more advanced weapons to fight opponents who probably already have outdated weapons to begin with.

"Time was your ally human. But now it has abandoned you. The Forerunners....have returned. And this tomb... is now yours". - The Didact

What people forget is that tech won't always improve, there could be a stagnation or something else in the history might happen that screws everything up.

In the case of the UNSC they focused on colonization,in other words they looked at ways to safe our species from overpopulation instead of looking at ways to kill ourselfs.

And it paid off,if the UNSC didn't invested all resources in colonization but in weaponry (i'm looking at you USA),the Halo Humans would still be stuck in the solar system and if they encountered the Covenant they will wiped out instantly ,then the Forerunners would wonder if they made the right choice of chosing Humanity as their succesors.

I can only please one person per day.

Today isn't your day.

Tomorrow isn't looking too good either.

1: Humanity uses the "If it hurts, it works" theory of weapon design, meaning that since they met nothing that bullets didn't work on, they had no need to develop anything else until they encountered the Covenant.

2: Most of the things in-game are not true to canon standards in order to balance gameplay and make it more fun.

3: How are MAC Canons, Slip-Space travel, Gauss Cannons, 1-man MBTs, near-bulletproof armor, integrated HUDs for EVERYONE and EVERYTHING and a suite of other technological advancements "anachronistic"?

They're not at all anachronistic, I'm saying that a few of the other things don't seem to measure up to those things which do fit into the time period.

Anarchronistic? I don't think that means what you think it means.

We were supposed to have offworld colonies by 2015. Halo just comes at a time when Sci-Fi is overcompensating in the other direction.

  • 08.16.2011 3:07 PM PDT

Anachronistic. As in some stuff in the game doesn't belong in the time where it is said to. As in some stuff in Halo seems too low tech for the 2500's. So I guess I agree with you.
