OK. I have been playing (and modding) Halo PC for about two years now. Every now and then I experiance a problem that is either a server issue or just my computer being on all day. Well now, it's been down for a week, and it's a different error.

I know it's not my mods, because if it was, then it would say the Gathering Exception Data box rather than just freezing my computer.

Here is a detailed description of what happened:

So it was a normal day. I was able to access Halo PC all day. I had been closing it frequently because I was modding and I have to have it closed when opening any map in HMT (Halo Map Tools) or HHT (Halo Hacking Tools). However, one time, when I began running the program, an unexpected occurance happened...

Halo started up normally. It showed the small screen with the title Halo, then it got large, full screen size. Just like normal, covering my toolbar etc like usual. So I'm at the part where it shows each company's intro, the Bungie thing, the Gearbox thing, and the Microsoft Game Studios thing. I am able to skip them normally using the space bar, however, during the Microsoft Game Studios, my computer freezes. I can't press the Windows button on my keyboard and ALT + CTRL + DELETE doesn't work. I have no choice but to reboot my computer and thust lose my settings. I try it again. This time not skipping the developer's intros. I let out a cry of victory, as I had gotten past the intros. However, it was short-lived. I realized the computer had frozen again, this time the screen pitch black, before getting even to the main menu. I have tried this about 4 different times on each user of my Windows XP, so I know it's definitely a problem.

Here's the next part which probably solves the puzzle. After I was done crying about this loss, I signed back on, just for MSN, website building, the regular crap. What happens? I get a pop-up from AVI about how my video card is not responding. This must be it, I assume. Whenever I look at bolded or large text now, whether it be in Microsoft Word or here on Bungie.net, there are some random lines around it. I will get a print screen of it.

This is obviously a problem because 1. I can't get onto Halo PC, and 2. cause everytime I reboot I get the message "Windows has recovered from a serious error." and then "Veiw Logs" etc. where I can click to see a bunch of numbers.

I am pretty sure it's something with my video or graphics card, as I am now quite frequently getting this message that says things such as "Windows has stopped communication with AVI_93242 (not accurate) because it was not responding to requests. Sorry for this inconvenience. Send AVI an email. Obviously I did but I get the ERROR screen and this never works.

My friend says it might be something to do with my drivers, however I think they are fine because I don't think drivers just randomly stop working, do they?

If anyone here could help me out, please do. If you need any of my Computer Specs, feel free to ask and I will have them up ASAP if I am online. If you think my video card is toast, then we have a problem.

A similiar problem happened to my other computer, my sister's, where she couldn't see maplestory. (Shes little.) It's a stupid full screen game but you couldn't see it. My dad went into the MapleStory folder and was able to change the refresh rate to automatic. This made it work. However I believe this was different because I could still hear audio when turning MS on, however with Halo PC my whole computer locks up.

Once again any help is GREATLY appreciated. I know that the folks here in The Maw are generally 4 billion times nicer than the folks over in New Mombasa and Zanzibar so I do have faith in getting this working again.

Thank you.

Whoa. Long post. You're likely not getting too much help mainly because most people are too lazy to read an uber-long post.

Very detailed, but we need to know one thing. WHAT ARE YOUR COMPUTER SPECS!?!?! Very important! System specs would help immensly, such as processor, card, OS, etc, etc. In fact, you spent about 2 paragraphs detailing how you believed it was your graphics card, but you ended up never telling us what type of graphics card it is.

I'm not sure if the following is correct, any computer techies are welcome to correct me. You said that after Halo loads and freezes, you're forced to do what's known as a "hard reboot," shutting your computer down manually. A built-in feature of Startup will check for errors and such, I don't think that should be anything to worry about. It just automatically does that when it senses a hard reboot because of an unresponsive program.

Another thing is the AVI bit you mentioned. That likely has nothing to do with your graphics card. Unless it's actually supposed to spell ATI.

Might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling. May prove useful.

One thing I noticed is your mention of HHT, or Halo Hacking Tools. After more than a year in the Halo modding community, I've never heard of something like that. And judging by the name, I'm not sure if you should be running something like that on your copy of Halo.

I think you were on the right track with thinking it was the graphics issue. While drivers will not go "bad", it's not unheard of for files to get "corrupted" in a Windows installation. I would start by uninstalling the videos drivers and re-installing them(check for the lastest version while your at it). After that uninstall and reinstall Halo and if that doesn't help the last step would be to take out the video card and put in one you know is fine.

sounds baaad. Ya, you probably will want to reinstall your video drivers first. I have a sound card whose drivers randomly get fudged up so I have to reinstall them. HHT? hm, doesent sound familliar. I have heard of HMT and Sparkedit but not HHT...

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

go to Start -> Run -> type in "dxdiag" without the quotes
Then save the report to your desktop.
Then open the file and paste the text into a post on here.
That will let us know what all of your specs are.

Yeah. Like I said, you probably misspelled ATI for AVI. ATI is the brand of a well-known graphics card maker. If there's a problem with ATI, then you've got a problem with your graphics card.

If you poke around the control panel long enough, you might find a link directly to the specific ATI page dedicated to your particular type of card, including drivers. Otherwise, just go to ATI's website and poke around there for your specific graphics card's webpage, and look for drivers there. Download it, but DON'T install it just yet.

Uninstall your current driver first, just go into My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, there should be something along the lines of "ATI Display Driver," highlight it and uninstall that sucker. Then you'll be all ready to install the new driver you d/led offline.

Oh, another thing. Don't put your saved DXDiag file onto Fileshare or something. Most people are also too lazy to d/l the file that way. Just open up the text document and copy and paste into the post.

About your drivers: Windows won't find any updated ones because.. well, because it's Windows.. lol

Go to ati.com. To the left you see Catalyst for Windows XP. Click there and download them. If you don't have the .NET Framework installed, you need the first two downloads. If you already have that, you only need the second one. Download 3 is not for you either way.

Install the .NET Framework. Uninstall your old drivers and install the new ones.

Good luck...

either your card has gone bad or your driver ha gone bad. reinstal your driver and if you still have the problem, its probably your card.
