I see what ajw means, it does sound very reasonable to assume that the timeless one is the gravemind. However, there is a slight flaw with the idea of how the gravemind could form without sentient life.
All the halo rings were given a wide range of environments and ecosystems to support a full planetary range of life, many sentient species live on halo rings simply because of the need to test the flood on them, and the halo ring's effectiveness, this was part of the librarians proposal to master builder which he had to agree to. The reason why you don't see any life in halo 2 on delta halo is because the flood had an outbreak around 2352 due to a lazy 2401 pentient tangent.
And in 200 years, they completely consumed all the sentient life on the halo ring. Now whether or not there was enough biomass to support the creation of a gravemind has yet to be seen. However, it should be noted that on installation 04, the flood had an outbreak and only a few days after, already began creating a proto-gravemind. Now given the fact that installation 04 had much more intelligent life; the covenant and little pockets of humanity. Another week or 2, and they would have constructed another gravemind.
So with intelligent sentient life, it would take only a few weeks if they captured enough of them (the covenant suck) to form a gravemind.
And on a halo with just regular sentient life, 200 years does sound like an ample amount of time to form a gravemind.
I am not entirely convinced about the precursor, my own hunch is that the gravemind is his pet or something. After all, the way greg bear is shaping the timeless one up points heavily to him having a major say in the next trilogy. Wouldn't it be rather anti-climactic if the precursor just turned out to be the gravemind that we already destroyed at the end of halo 3?
You may be right ajw, however, i would like to hold on a little longer until primordium comes out in January to make my ultimate decision.
Besides, i really support the idea of the timeless one not being the gravemind, simply because I want to see a precursor up close in the next trilogy.
