I know this happened quite a bit ago (along with the rest of the Bungie.net (mainly aesthetic) update. But I still for the life of me can't figure out why they changed the navigation to the game forums.

Its so convoluted now and, from what I can see, its causing a lot more misplaced threads especially in the BNet: Community forum. I mean, what was wrong with it before when it was a simple drop down (well, drop rightwards) tab where all the game forums were easily accessible from any page of the site?

The only possible reason I can think of for doing this was to downplay the game forums since Bungie no longer owned the rights or managed in anyway the games mentioned therein. But even then, why downplay them? Bungie made 5 really great Halo games, all good in their own respects. Just because you don't maintain them anymore doesn't mean you never did.

On a side note, I know it's still PRETTY inexcusable for not being able to find your way to the Reach forums, but making it all the much harder has still affected the number of Locked threads due to improper placement.

Also, why put it at the bottom of the tab? Putting it at the bottom right after a long list of all the different branches of what a "Bungie Forum" is makes it all the more indistinguishable within the list, thereby increasing the chances that people will glaze over it and totally miss the place where you go to get to the game forums.

I know this has turned really rant-ish really fast but I just don't understand the methodology behind this change.

P.S. If they already answered this, I'm sorry. But I couldn't find anywhere that they did whilst searching for a duplicate.

TL;DR Me = confused why they changed navigation to the Game Forums.

You said it yourself, they're not in charge of the halo games anymore. This is bungie.net, not halo.xbox.com.
And really, it's not hard to read a list and see where it is. If someone doesn't have the patience to read for ten seconds, why are they on a discussion forum?

Make choices, and don't look back.

They are done with Halo, and that was one step in making that clearer. Some can't figure out how to get to the Halo forums though without it being listed in the drop down menu unfortunately.

Well since Halo isn't the main focus of the site anymore...yeah, you see where I'm going with this.

  • 08.16.2011 12:16 PM PDT

I think it's because they want the Halo people to head over to the Waypoint forums, they wanted Bungie.net for now or at least for a while to be more Community Focused for those who come here for everything but Halo.

You think it's bad in the community? You should take a stroll through the Universe Forum some time, wrong forum posts every other thread.

"Oh it's the Bungie Universe that means I can talk about anything here."
No no it doesn't. read the rules.

Get over yourself - drink vodka!

You can always use bookmarks to get there, and they would be faster than the old navigation anyways.

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

It's a way of showing they no longer control those games , that there are more appropriate places now.

I'm going to hazard a guess that Bungie is going to be completely dark until either E3 2012 or E3 2013.

They said they were going darker than ever, so I figure they'll want to weed out all of the Halo fans to halo.xbox.com and away from Bungie.net so that their loyal Bungie-fans are here waiting for Destiny and not for Halo4 (which, believe it or not, a lot of people are expecting from Bungie).

This also gives them the chance to put spotlight on their Bungie-specific forums, and make room for a dedicated forum for Destiny whenever they happen to go ahead and announce it. I have a feeling it's going to be so big and monstrously beautiful that the Halo forums here on Bnet are going to cease to be used entirely, hence why they're stuffed in the small corner that they are.

This has all clearly been done for a very good reason, and it's not like Bungie's butthurt or anything (well not by much anyway); they're just doing it because right now they want people to talk about their future, not their past.

I've noticed quite a few more incorrectly placed threads. I do sort of agree with the OP. The forum still exists, but it just makes it more difficult to notice or get to. If someone is new, or just asking a quick question, I think they'd might be more likely to post in the correct forum if they could hover over the Halo Forums section and see the individual game forums (maybe) as it would make it more obvious what it contains. Even if that wouldn't help, I still don't see why the Halo Forums couldn't have the drop out box.

I'm going to guess that you're wrong, b/c we'll hear about Crimson and probably some other Aerospace project(s) by then.

But assuming you're talking about just Bungie-made games, then yeah I'd agree.

They changed it because they wanted to capitalize that they're not responsible for maintaining Halo while keeping the forums for the fans. It's amazing that they even kept those forums. You shouldn't be coming here for Halo content anymore so those forums shouldn't be showcased in the community tab!

I'm sure there will be a new arrangement in the future for Aerospace and Destiny/Tiger though.

They're done with Halo, so they are hiding it so that you go to the 343i forums.

I was going to put this in my original post, but I'll just say it now:

Nobody cares.

Misplaced threads are easily ignorable, and were generally unavoidable before they changed the forum layout anyway. As time goes on, and as the Halo population moves on to 343i, we'll see less and less of these particular instances of misplaced threads.

You're also forgetting that even during Halo 3 the Community Forum got about as many misplaced threads as that.

I think the problem is to do with the banner, personally; it doesn't explain that the forum is for discussion about Bungie as a company or Bungie.net feedback, and more looks like it says "The catch-all forum for anything happening in the Bungie Community". But that's a different story.

If they were as easily avoidable and if nobody cared about them to the extent you're talking about then why lock them at all? People will stop posting in them regardless...

Well there are two ways I go about off-topic threads.

1. Report and move on
2. Give them a quick answer, then send them in the right direction.

I agree with SonicJohn, if a thread is posted in the wrong spot, you can easily ignore it or post in it to refer the OP to take it to the 343i forums/Bungie Halo forums/wherever.

It's been going on for years, its not going to stop and nothing that is done by the online team is going to fix it completely.
