Subject: We should get rid of perma-bans.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Permanent bans are important on the forums and irritate the minds out of people like 'John Cena' when enforced upon them, especially if done quickly enough (which usually happens).

People who say 'do we know who John Cena's account name is now?' have to also note that someone, like John Cena, would begin spamming shock sites the moment they have got around a recent permanent ban, and seeing as how I have personally not seen one in around a few weeks it is safe to assume the permanent bans are working.

I'm trying to become an '04, but it's not working too well."

Let's get rid of moderators all together. People still break the rules even though they're around!!!!

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

The man behind the mask can always put on another mask, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't block the first one. The permanent ban is also a useful threat. Not for the hardcore trolls, but for random users.

Part of the perma-ban is the pysch factor of losing your username.

Yep.

Also, if someone plans to evade a ban, the length won't really matter so you might as well just keep it.

No we shouldn't get rid of them. My old main account was perma banned and when I tried appealing this is what Achronos sent me.

A permanent ban means that account cannot get access back. Ever.

If you've been using an alt but aren't getting into trouble, I don't really invest the time to go find them. The real punishment of a ban is that the identity you used before can't be used again - and that still holds despite you creating an alt.

I bolded the part that is most relevant to this thread.

You can't haz mudkip.

I don't think it's harder for mods to issue a permaban than it is to issue a 60-90 day ban. Like that guy said before, it's playing whack-a-mole. But they can't ever pop out of the same hole. And if you ban them for a month or two, they could just make a new wave of attacks, even creating spam threads since they are also now 1-2 months old users.

Permabans don't make much difference to those who receive them. Sure most people in this thread are all "OO BUT MY IDENTITY", but the trolls and shock site spammers don't give a damn.

What's an IP ban? Seriously.
You know that computer you're using? And how it has a unique connection the Internet? It connects with what's called an "IP", which is a label attached to your connection. Basically, websites can block that particular IP from accessing their websites or their services.

The reason Bungie.net doesn't is because Dynamic IPs exist, meaning that people can change their IPs on the fly, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

The closest thing to an IP ban on this site is if you're banned and try to sign into another account on the same computer; that then bans the second account as well. This is particularly important to remember when you're at a fellow Bnetters' house.

Isn't there IP bans though?
Aren't there IP bans though?

I do not believe so.
ip banning is only good for the known users who never change ip addy's.

IP banning of what achronos once said is only for the extream circumstances.
I consider John Cena serious circumstances.
