It depends on what you consider to be a warning.

A sign on the highway that shows the speed limit is a "warning" in that it illustrates the limit and warns people not to exceed it.

A cop pulling over a motorist for passing that limit, speaking to them but deciding not to give them a citation, that is also a warning.

Now, the rules are posted. So they are a warning, just like a roadside sign. But no one's heart starts pounding or gets sweaty when they see a speed limit sign. And so, some may speed.

But when the lights are flashing and they are face-to-face with the person who is the embodiment of what that sign represented (and somehow failed to make/leave an impression), the "warning" carries a lot more weight. It made an impression. It will be remembered. It got your attention.

So, a warning from a moderator needs to be something more than just a "road sign" that informs/reminds people of the rules. It needs to demonstrate and give a hint of the potential consequences. So, why is a slight hit to your trust rating and your title NOT a good thing for a "warning that you failed to pay attention to the posted warnings"?

I am human, I am good and bad as well. But I try my hardest to stay good. And some of the things I do and say may be bad. Or just not too good, but I do try.

So with that said I don't fault you. I mean your only human, good or bad.

Stat and Sig

I do Care about my titles because I see them as a reward and for me being rewarded like that it's like an accomplishment and when I get warned and seeing my reward taken from me It sucks.

As far as member titles go, honestly, who cares. I know I personally respect a well thought out OP or reply more than the color of a title bar. Length of time on the site is irrelevant to me if we are having a good discussion.
That's a completely different discussion. We, as in the community members, didnt choose to have titles but now that they're here they might aswell do the best out of it.

Having warnings affect trust rating is just as stupid as:
'I'm going to let you off with a warning this time. Oh and by the way, here's a $200 ticket

That ticket is supposed to come the next time the person is being pulled over or does something worse.

Now, you can blame semantics and claim that "warning" is just a label or say that the moderators never look at titles prior to dealing with infractons but we all know that it's a bunch of BS.

As for the title system, how successful is a system going to be when you have no chance of actively affect your title in a positive direction but every time you happen to do the slightest thing wrong it will go "down". It reminds me of what a teacher once told us on the first day of school one year:
- In this very moment you're all A+ students.

True but it also meant that they were counting mistakes and not accomplishments, the accmplishments were simply filed under "expected of you".

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Warnings are warnings, but I don't think one warning should strip you of your member title. That's a bit ridiculous. Especially if you have a higher title.

I think warnings are great becuase they tell users they are doing something wrong.

But at the same time, warnings also affect member titles.
That's where I stopped reading. The only thing member titles are good for is troll detection.

If you worry about having a high title so much, you'll do your best not to get warned or banned.

When i think of warnings, I think about a cop pulling over someone for speeding and says I will let you off with a warning, the driver faces no punishment.

But here, it is like the Policeman reported the driver to every policeman on the road and the driver faces points on his license.

Worst analogy ever.

Says the Mythic member.
Exactly. Being a Mythic Member you tend not care about a title. Hell, you don't even need to be a Mythic Member. Member titles are just 'hats', and shouldn't be taken seriously - especially when one loses or gains a title. Sure it's fun, but one mustn't dedicate all of his time getting one. Such as when they do silly things like breaking rules and then complaining that they lost their precious member title.

I don't think they should. I and Qbix know why (dude, I'm still annoyed by that...).

To clarify: I think that the warning system is a great idea, but I don't think they should have any power behind them. If one is warned and continues doing whatever it was that provoked the warning in the first place, they are worthy of the ban that will be coming their way.

If someone is warned for something silly (Oh, I don't know, maybe a typo from exhaustion), that they should be punished at all.

Yep. If you really care about your title, you'll make sure not to break the rules and suffer an even worse blow to your trust rating by getting yourself banned.

Like others have said, 3 or 7 day bans used to be warnings. Be glad that we have a warning system in place anyway.

But, should you be punished for a warning. (trust rating, titles)?

Alright, I was warned for this post:10/12/2010 2:36 PM: Qbix89 [785739] sent a warning to this user.

I was trying to help, however I was exhausted (sleep deprived), and I named the hyperlink wrong. It did, however, target the right destination (The Gallery as opposed to The Classifieds). At the time, I had been an Exalted Heroic Member, and I was bumped down to a Noble Member.

I've since stopped trying to help people in that manner.

I actually looked at your ban/warning history before you edited your post, to find out myself what you were talking about. I stick by my original statement.

why do you write

like this

it's very annoying

if you understand

where i'm getting at.

Seriously though... Warnings are good (Though admittedly I usually just get banned) and it's not like titles even mean anything - albeit Ninja titles do, obviously.

I type like that so people have an easier time to read, so my posts are not intimidating walls of text.

.

When you post like that it breaks up what the reader is viewing making it take twice as long to process then it should. Most users use paragraphs, albeit short ones. You can get your points in without being "intimidating".

Sorry if I scared you with that 3 line block of text.

It has been the opinion of myself and many other prominent users for years now that a lesser type of warning is needed. One that is a "slap on the wrist", or at least similar in level of severity, and does not affect member titles.

Some are saying, why care about member titles? And that's a good point. It's just some prefixes and a color, after all. Doesn't really give you the ability to do anything.

But many do care about their member titles, and why shouldn't they be able to care for them? They look at it like an achievement, a badge of honor for sticking around Bnet for years, contributing and getting along with one another. As long as member titles exist, IMO there is nothing wrong with liking your own, wanting to preserve it or even wanting to improve it. If that's not what they are there for, then WTF is their purpose?

Of course, a slap on the wrist type of warning would best be used extremely lightly. Only for those rare minor issues where it's not appropriate to take no action, but punishment doesn't seem fit. Maybe a 24hour ban with no member title damage. If this was used sparingly for extremely minor disruptions or ToS violations that fall in a "gray" area, what would be the harm? The greatest Ninja discretion of course would be needed when handing this type of thing out.

Another suggestion I've always wanted to see come to fruition is the ability of Master Ninjas to repeal a ban and undo damage caused if in the extremely rare case someone was wrongfully banned. Might be a severe rarity, but tell that to the few who actually had this happen to them.
