The ded serv readme says optimal reqs are 1.4 G processor, 256 MB RAM, and 380 MB HD. Will this really work well for a 16 person server? If so, great, but I thought you needed like 3 gig processor, 1 gig ram, and 10k rpm 80 gig hdd...

This server would be a clan server and would probably be packed 60% of the time. It could almost never have mediocre performance. Is there a happy medium, somewhere in between dual core xeon and antique? Does anyone here have experience with this sort of thing? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

I think the more the merrier. Those stats seem low for a server thats gonna be prossessing 16 players at the same time but I have no experience with that, I rent my server. However, even more critical then the hardware requirements is high upload bandwidth. This is the speed that your connection pushes information TO the internet. Most cable connections are 3MB/s download and only 340kbs upload. This will only let you run about 5-6 players max before the lag gets unbearable. To run a 16player server you need a T1 which is 1.5MB up and down, but those are several $100 per month.

yeah, upload will definitely be a problem. I had been hoping we could run the server through a college network, which would solve speed problems, but we'd have to find a college that didn't mind some random server laying around eating up bandwidth and electricity. And presenting a potential fire hazard.

Oh well, I guess it's like the Oscar-winning song says, "It's hard out here for a pimp | Something something something... something pay the rent"

P.S. If you don't mind my asking, what's the monthly fee you pay for your server?

Oh yeah, and thanks for the prompt help!

Your machine is most definitely heavy enough to run a server. The reason most people rent one is because their internet connection isn't fast enough.

I checked some prices a month ago because I was interested in renting one, and the cheapest i found was $30 a month.

Clanservers.com has servers for $2/slot/month I (and ZENN, McKeegan)pay $24/month for a 12 slot server. But 16 ppl lay fine on it so they aren't monitoring or clipping the bandwidth. I'm so bad
