I have been wondering since Halo 2...

What were you thinking when you designed High Charity? How did a big mushroom cross your mind?

Without looking into it the only assumptions or speculations I can make are that the Covenant constructed High Charity around the Forerunner Vessel. (<-- that I know)

Aside from that, I would assume the Covenant built it in sections depending on the Hierarchy that was the Covenant. Prophets at the top. Elites scattered throughout the upper, middle and lower levels. Grunts and Jackles towards the bottom, etc.

I'm not sure like I said. Without looking into it.

From a cannon point of view yes. But when Bungie was actually sitting down thinking about it. There were a number of ways they could of gone with the design but a mushroom shape is what stood out?

When the Reformist San'Shyuum faction launched the Keyship on Janjur Qom it tore half the planet off. They built the rest of High Charity around the rock as a mobile space station.

I like the shape, what have you got against mushrooms?

Nothing inparticular. I like it aswell but i just wanted to know, why a mushroom? It's not the first thing that pops into people's minds.

Thats probably why actually, they wanted something unique.

"There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe."
Gospel of John, 1:1-7

Well, I giant box flying through space isn't exactly stunning. Neither is seeing a miniature planet fly towards you. (Though cooler than the box..)

I won't even get started on other shapes. Giant pyramid? That's just silly.

Anyway, what do you have in mind that would be better than a mushroom?

Hmm not sure. Maybe a much larger scale cruiser? Possibly some big Forerunner ship like the one High Charity is built around on a lager scale? A giant space station would do me, i dunno.

Like i said it's not that i don't like it but it's just the fact that a mushroom in space sounds a bit...odd. Then again most Covenant structures are odd. They are ment to be unique.

Well I don't think you could get the point across just how big that cruiser would be. They want it to seem massive. If you saw that big of cruiser in space, you'd think it was just really close. If you saw a relatively large cruiser near it, you'd just think the actually already large cruiser was very small and maybe that the super cruiser was giant. Unless you actually put that High Charity type cruiser next to a city or something to scale it by, then Bungie wouldn't be able to get the point across.

Eh, it's current design makes the construction, the urban expansion (both of past, and of potential future, given how extended and incomplete the "stem" appears to be) and the change it was likely subjected to over the course of millenia more apparent, as it should be with a city older than the Covenant itself. A massive cruiser would just fail to have this effect, fail to convey that it is a city under constant change, and has been so for ages. I mean, cities expand spontaneously, and are never supposed to be static.

How about a klein bottle or a mobius strip?
