How would you drop and pick up a new weapon for you left hand without losing the gun in your right hand. The controler simply doesn't have enought buttons.

Hey don't worry Bungie has got it covered. Anyway there is probally a feature like hold down B or hold down the gernade trigger. Something like that.

you might just have to put one of the guns away first

Or since you wont be using grenades you could use the left trigger to switch between which gun to drop

There will probably be a little on screen menu that says drop right or drop left, if you are carrying 2 weapons

that sounds like it will be pretty easy if bungiew does it like that. i hope they do.

  • 04.14.2004 9:57 AM PDT

bah

I'm thinking they'll utilize button combos for that. Combos aren't that bad. I use them all the time. Combos like melee grenade melee, or reload reload switch.

Right but almost all of those will take a few seconds and are more complicated then just hitting one button. In the heat of battle that might get you killed.

I wish they would post a controller showing what buttons will do what so we can stop with the "I wonder how to do this blah blah". Someone should email them :).

I think when you have two weapons out you'll hold X like normal then pull the trigger for the side you want to change the weapon on.

The only problem with holding X and then pulling a trigger is the fact that half the time you're running over the gun, not standing on it. If you're running there is no way you could press X and pull a trigger, without accidentally shooting your gun.

Twelve Large ²

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

Good idea, Cobalt. I hope they will come up with a way to keep all weapon selections mapped to the ' x ' button.

Hold down ' x ' first, then pull the trigger.

Actually, I see what you're saying. I still think it would work. It shouldn't be too hard to hit two separate buttons almost simultaneously.

Answer:
You don't.

My thoughts:
I'm guessing that there will just be a simple system to sort out your weapons.

Perhaps it'll go like this:
-You're holding two guns (and like a shotgun in the other slot, whatever). You're standing over another another one-handed. Hold X, MC will cycle through the guns. Once you've got the two you want, maybe tap another button (or hold X when not standing over anything) to switch them between hands if necessary. As shown, this whole process could function with one button. Maybe not the best implementation, but 0 extra buttons nonetheless.

And by the way: The D-pad makes 4 new buttons. Tie that to smart buttons (X picks up weapons, gets in vehicles, and reloads already) and Bungie has a plethora of options!
Trust me, there's tons of "free buttons".

Not to mention, why are you talking about sorting two weapons while you're running? Personally, and maybe it's just me, juggling a handful of guns whilst sprinting does not seem like a necessary feature for me. Even Master Chief isn't going to try sprinting over and juggling guns in the middle of a firefight- it's a silly thing to do.

I wasn't talking about sprinting. I'm talking about just moving over a gun while trying to switch weapons. I think it would be too hard to have a menu like in Red Faction II, though I'm sure Bungie could pull almost anything off, this least of all.

I don't really follow to what you're referring. Swapping weapons while running is an essential feature of Halo gameplay. First of all, I do believe they are going to keep the two gun limit. That means if you dual-wield say, a plasma pistol and an SMG, there WILL NOT be another gun in your other "slot". Those will be your two guns. It is stupid to allow the MC to carry more than two guns, when the two gun limit worked so well in forcing tactical decisions.

Secondly, once we acknowledge that the guns you double-wield will be your two guns, it would be very simple to switch out the weapon you want while running. Just switch back to single-wield mode, hold down X as you run past a weapon on the ground, and it will swap that weapon for the weapon you're holding, just like in Halo 1. You guys are making it too complicated.

And, gspawn, your idea for cycling and such is too cumbersome. I doubt Bungie would ever include anything remotely like that in Halo 2. I do agree with your point about the D-pad, though. Bungie has enough free buttons for the new features. They'll figure something out.

There is a bigger question here. How many weapons can MC carry? Just because MC can now dual weild shouldn't mean that he can now cary more weapons. The fact is, the MC is supposed to be able to switch from dual weilding to single weilding with grenade option at will. However if this happens that means the MC is carying two weapons while using one which goes against the previous ideal of Halo which makes it so great.

At first I thought it might be okay because it seemed that dual weilding would only happen if you are using the same weapon (ie. two smgs) as shown in the E3 trailer. Now however one can mix an match. Does this now mean that MC can hold up to 4 weapons? Given the fact that you are supposed to be able to switch between single and dual weilding at will this seriously changes the mechanics of the game (since you could single wield any of 4 weapons) and breaks the ideal that a person can only have two weapons, one strapped somewhere with the other being used.

This has led me to believe a few things. For starters MC will still only be able to carry two weapons. In the E3 trailer the fact that he has 3 weapons (two smgs and a BR) may have simply been for show case as in look at the cool new things you can do and the fact that it was a very early build. If MC can only have two weapons this now fixes many problems. Once again we are back to the same strategic ideal of only 2 weapons at a time. It also makes it very easy to switch between what weapon set up one wants to use. My idea for how this would work is as follows.

-To switch to a single weilded weapon while single weilding TAP Y as usual.
-To bring up the second gun for dual weilding HOLD the Y button.
-To go back to single weilding the weapon you started with HOLD the Y button again
-To switch to single weilding the second weapon TAP the Y button

This makes it very easy to switch to what weapon you want to single wield and solves the problem oh holding more weapons than the previous philosophy of Halo 1 allowed.
