So, how would it work? Its not like earth where you have a central mass buried deep in the core. This may sound stupid but I'm curious.

^This.

Here's a simple way to test this out:

1) Take a bucket with handles.
2) Fill it with water.
3) Start spinning around (quickly) with the filled bucket. If you are going fast enough, you can safely lift the bucket a bit higher to see inside better.

See how the water stays in the bucket? It does not fall out, even when your arm (and the bucket) are straight in front of you.

Until you stop moving, of course. Good luck not getting wet!
(PROTIP: Gradually decrease your speed.)

Part of it could be that silly thing known as centrifugal force.

Also, the Forerunner could have rigged together some neato artificial gravity systems if they wanted an arbitrary spin speed for the ring.

I'll just piggyback on this topic and ask the same question about Shield 0459, the world from Halo Wars. How is there Earth-like gravity (in terms of nature, not strength) on the surface but "reverse" gravity on the inner surface?

< Insert witty comment/joke here >

Benjamin!

I'm fairly sure the Forerunners managed to create artificial gravity systems, seeing as they are in place on Covenant ships.
Seeing as the Covenant don't have the best understanding of the technology and they can get it work, I imagine that the real deal is advanced enough to work on a huge ring world.

A star is essentially a nuclear fusion reactor, not impossible to build on a small scale.

Tisk, kids these days, don't know their gravitational acceleration from their rotating frame of reference...

That could get ya killed you know!

Under very obscure circumstances.... but... it could! :o

It's called centrifugal force.
