So I've been thinking recently, how does Bungie compare to the other really big game developers.

Sure, they don't have the numbers of a company like Blizzard. They don't have the funding of a developer like EA (not that they're bankrupt or a poor company just that they obviously don't have nearly the income as EA). They definitely don't have the popularity of one of the really big developers like Activision. And they don't develop as many games as a company like Ubisoft.

But does any of that really matter? I, personally, like to consider Bungie one of the unsung "heroes" (I would use the word "innovators" but the phrase 'unsung heroes' is too cliched not to use here) of the gaming industry. Nearly every game they've come out with in the past 10 years has been a hit. And yet they never seem to be at the forefront of gaming discussion on bigger mediums like television and such.

They have the 2 bestselling games on the Xbox (Halo: CE and Halo 2, obviously) and 3 of the top 12 best selling games on the 360 (H3, H:Reach, H3:ODST). [This is all according to the wikipedia article for best selling games of all time, so falsehoods are possible present in the above statistics]

Despite what people might say about their game most recent games (Reach specifically) about them being for "noobs" or all the little annoyances they may have with matchmaking, all their games are solid ones. And, they really do know how to craft a universe so that people give two -blams!- about the characters and the story therein. This is as opposed to games like Modern Warfare where if you went up to the average fanboy and asked them to recite to you a general synopsis of the Modern Warfare "story" they couldn't do it to save their grandma's life.

So I'll pose the question again simply for a lack of a way to end this OP not related to grandma death, why do you think Bungie is not as popular a developer as Activision, EA, Ubisoft etc... despite their continued ability to produce quality and popular games?

Quite a few assumptions in this thread, I must say.

Bye.

The way I see it, Bungie was tied down to one specific game and style. E.A., Ubisoft, Activision all have options for gamers, don't like FPS? How bout Adventure? Sport?

However, the companies you mention get other smaller firms to develop the games. So they can release loads of titles per year. Bungie releases 1 every 2-3 years.

Hello! You may also know me as Ijnekono. How you have made your way here I do not know, but welcome. (:

Sorry, but I didn't read most of the post. My opinion is that Bungie is one of the bigs. Why? They have created one of the most celebrated and memorable games... ever. They have a new IP on the way and with their ambition, I'd keep an eye on them. I have great confidence they will awe us.

Actually, I find that I'm more invincible without pants, which is why I am not wearing any at the moment.

I guess. I feel kind of weird calling them that when their only HUGE hit has been Halo.

Gospel of John, 1:1-7

Plus, Bungie is revolutionary.

Marathon was the first FPS where you could hold only a specific number of weapons (two or three?), and it was a very well done and nice FPS, among one of the most popular original FPS'.

Myth was very revolutionary in terms of RTS'. I'm sure Age of Empires and the like got some ideas from Myth.

Halo revolutionized FPS' again. I don't need to go into that, though.

Correction: C&C was arguably the pioneer in the RTS field.

In their field, yes, leaders, elsewhere they're known, but not famous.

And I would just think that even though they don't come out with a multitude of games they'd be more "famous" than they are because of how revolutionary they've been.
