My old processor is bent so i am on my laptop right now. I just dont want to buy a new comp, because i like my dell too much.

Er...we can't really steer you until we know what kind of Mobo you've got there...before you bought that processor, you DID make sure the mobo would accept that Pentium, right?

But for starters, I would suggest something better than a Pentium D. Have you considered looking into AMD processors? They're usually more efficient than their Intel counterparts, and better at gaming.

A dual core Pentium would be fine, but upgrading to a celeron, isn't really an upgrade. Go with something dual core or AMD 64.

NO Haloking365 dont listen to greenxpanda!

nothing against you panda, but dells are not compatable with AMD64's. You have to figure out which processor you have now. Go to start, control panel, performance....., system, and it will tell you on the bottom of the page what processor.

Also what do you mean by "my old processor is bent". Literally the CPU itself is broken, or the whole computer? If it wont boot it could be hundreds of things.

i think what he means is the CPU itself is physically broken, and he cant use his computer, so he has to use a laptop.

what was the old cpu, exactly?

the pins on the processor are bent, and it was an intel pentium 4, 2.40 Ghz single-core, slot 478 processor. my friend salvaged an old 1.8ghz processor to work in it for now, but that is waaaaaaay too slow for me. i will try to get the specs of my mobo when i am at home (i am at school now). so i go to start->control panel->performance->system to get info?

Don't double-post, please. Someone will get around to you eventually.

Actually, go into Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt and type this:

dxdiag

and press enter. Don't mind the scary-looking command prompt, you can't really break your computer through tinkering with that (that is, unless you type format, of course). It should bring up your comptuer specs. Doing what you suggested, System Info, gives you general computer information, DxDiag gets down to the cores of things.

I've read this solution to bent pins in a pc magazine once, but I don't know if you should really try it:

You could try using a mechanical pencil that has no lead in it to straighten the bent pins. You would get the pin into the empty barrel of the pencil, and make it straight again. You could give that a try to revive your older processor.

You really DIDN'T have to post all of that, this isn't a HJT Log thread.

lol, you're complaining about it being "far too slow" when you've got a celeron. silly. Also, if your processor's shagged, you're best off upgrading in the direction of AMD, especially socket AM2 in the near future. Especially as you're using a socket 478 mobo. Skt 478 is -blam!-e, it should have been phased out years ago but intel only kept it on because the american market is always painfully slow to upgrade.

but anyway; find yourself a place selling one of these, that's as fast as skt 478 goes. if you'd call that fast, but if that's out of your price range (which it probably is; intel are money whores, especially for flogging dead lines and products), go for this.

How do you determine if a CPU is compatible with your compter? is it just the slot/socket type, or software related? i am completely lost in this area of computers.

It's the slot type or socket number, it's either a 3 digit number like 775 for the newer P4s or 939 for the A64s. It can sometimes be a letter like Socket A for athlon XPs. Your socket number refers to the pre-775 celerons. Just froogle the socket number and you should find some decent ones.
