"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Most people in the community already know this.

when we make threads about trolls, we are giving them what they want, attention.

Isn't that what you just did?

Well if you go to the Flood forum they didn't get the memo.

I hope this would be the LAST thread about the matter.

Your hope holds no merit and will not be fulfilled. I am sorry.

To add to what the previous poster has said:
They say that when you're in Rome, you should follow their customs. Likewise, when you venture into the Flood, do as they do or don't do at all.

Guys seriously, the best way to ignore trolls is to IGNORE THEM, when we make threads about trolls, we are giving them what they want, attention.

And a sudden surge of irony, was felt throughout the village..

You can't seriously think that. Trolling can't be completely stopped. We just do what we can to minimize it. There will never be a way to stop trolling, and you need to deal with it.

There's a difference between trolling and spam.

Trolling is god-damn hilarious when it's done right (my friends and I troll all the time amongst ourselves). Being a menace and a nuisance, like the people who post John Cena links, etc, is a totally different matter, and a serious one and it's called "spam".

We throw the term "troll" around as if it's bad, when really what we're talking about are the menacing dolts that spam.

We shouldn't even get rid of "trolling" because it is a art and it is beautiful when it gets results that don't hurt anyone. Of course you can troll someone in a way that ends up really affecting someone's life (for example: telling someone to delete system32 as a way to fix an issue on your computer, which is a classic example of negative trolling...don't try it, by the way.)

The John Cena spamlinks are not "trolling", they're spam created by low-life spammers. I'm not sure when "spamming" and "trolling" became the same word in people's eyes, but I can assure you they are not synonymous.

Basically, though I suppose "troll" and "spammer" can be synonymous at times, "trolling" and "spamming" are not.

Just my roundabout $0.02.

There's already too many of these damn threads in this forum.
The thread count is too damn high!

I agree with SJ, the shock links are spam. Some people can find comedy, even beauty, in trolling. I think the simple solution is just to censor the links (reroute to Bnet). Does Achronos need us to write the Regex for him?

You can cut the irony in this thread with a chainsaw... Aren't you giving them credit by posting this thread? there isn't much that can be done and I guarantee you that everyone isn't going to magically "come together as a community" no matter how much anyone wants it. This isn't a perfect world unfortunately.

  • 08.21.2011 9:56 PM PDT

Posted by: SonicJohnI agree wholeheartedly. Take for example Primo's (serious) thread. That thread caused no harm whatsoever, other than people hurting themselves from laughter, versus the nonsense people post occasionally. When trolling is done for the sake of humor I personally think it's fine if it's not overly done. When trolling is done to provoke hate and anger (fine line with flame baiting) it's silly.

Negative trolling IS trolling, what you classify as "positive trolling" is simply joking, satire, joshing, although you could use trolling as a word to mean those things it's actual meaning is different.

Trolling is essentially greifing, you're doing something to someone to provoke a emotional response, something that is most commonly negative.

(You can't say "You are a lovely person" to someone, watch them walk away smiling, then smile to yourself and say "That dude got trolled".)

I reported a troll earlier like 5 times and he never got banned.
It was in a serious thread about my girlfriends condition and how she might be in danger, and all this troll did was make fun at the situation and made me feel bad.

I feel it's right to say his name, because he has to be the most disrespectful people on this site, and I have no idea why he's still here. It's Derka Derka.

Yes...

...what you classify as "positive trolling" is simply joking, satire, joshing...Yes...

although you could use trolling as a word to mean those things it's actual meaning is different. Is that not how synonyms work?

Trolling is essentially greifing, you're doing something to someone to provoke a emotional response, something that is most commonly negative."Griefing" isn't the same as "provoking an emotional response". Would you say that a positive emotional response is griefing? Is humour a form of griefing? Don't think I follow you on this one.

(You can't say "You are a lovely person" to someone, watch them walk away smiling, then smile to yourself and say "That dude got trolled".)Um. Obviously. That's a pretty bad attempt at trolling. You could, however tell someone that you love them, then when they're basking in the happiness, tell them that you also love bad breath so that might be why. That's still kinda weak trolling, but it's still better than that weak-ass attempt you laid out.

Both of you need to stop attempting to define trolling... because neither of you are right. And neither is anybody else. "Troll" when it comes to a user of the internet is a indefinite word that is better defined through experience with trolls than with an actual definition. If somebody wants to know what a troll is, you don't define a troll, you show them some examples.

This argument will be neverending and pointless until the end of time.

Does anyone on here seriously believe that the entire community could come together and ignore the trolls as an entire unit?

That just isn't possible, and making pointless threads like this just adds to the problem, as pointed out already.

There is quite literally nothing that can be done about trolls, they will always be around, as long as membership is open to anyone (no, I'm not suggesting anything, it's already been suggested in the past, and it was a stupid idea from the start). The only thing that you can do is not fall for obvious shock links, especially after the first time you have been tricked.

That's it, nothing more, trolls aren't going anywhere, get over it.

This made me laugh way harder than it should have.

Trolls will never stop, spammers will never stop. The moderators can thin the tide, but they'll never get them all. It's just human nature.
