I've noticed that recently talk about Bungie's new game ("Destiny") has died down a bit. But I've been wondering about what Bunige is going to do to live up to the hype building around this next game. They're so well known for being able to innovate entire gaming genres, that I'm wondering what they could do to live up to this.

I mean, obviously REALLY big innovations are usually never seen coming because if somebody had thought of it, well, it would have been done. But I still am racking my brain to think of something that they could do.

If they come out with a basic space FPS, people will think they're just resting on their laurels with their ability to make "Halo-esque" or just plain Halo games. However, if they make a game that's so radically out of the element of their entire established audience, they'll get flamed.

The only thing I've thought of so far could be cross-platform online play in their next game. I know there's a whole load of logistical problems with that, not the least of which being that Microsoft and Sony would get their panties in a bunch about it despite how awesome it would be.

[I guess this is a TL;DR of sorts...]But yeah, I guess the question I'm posing is this:

How can/will "Destiny" innovate gaming in your opinion, if at all and why will it not if you think it won't?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Once a trailer is released and a forum is made for the game, those who have left will return with anticipation.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

we will know when we buy it. :p

If it is an Open-World FPS ( in the vein of the Elder Scrolls series), then I think that Bungie would have an impressive innovation right there.

Most FPS's, despite how big they make the map, are very linear what with the Mission Objectives, etc.

To make it open-world, possible with side quests/objectives, would give us as players an unprecedented amount of freedom in the game.

If (going by the unfounded rumors...) what people are saying is true, and we can travel from planet-to-planet, making each planet an open-world excursion would be more freedom, and unlike any other FPS on the market.

I think aside from name-recognition, this type of feature would breath some new life into the FPS genre. Not to mention an FPS that is truly open-world would be such an innovated idea, that in itself would sell millions of copies.

I think that Destiny has the opportunity to innovate like this, and I am anxious to see if Bungie possibly takes their new Universe in this direction, or to see if they come up with something even better.

Yes! Bungie should recreate, atom by atom, an entire galaxy!!! The most freedom you could possibly have!!!

Hello! You may also know me as Ijnekono. How you have made your way here I do not know, but welcome. (:

I predict it will be like Galactic Civilizations. If you haven't played it, it's one of my favorite Strategy games out there.
Destiny will allow you to take your people to, well, their destiny. It will feature FPS gameplay while you command your people, defend them and interact with fellow players.

Idk, just an idea.

And if they do it this way (or something very similar), then their new game would have something possibly close to 400-500 hours of game time (like the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was clocked at, and that's even just for the Main Quest and the Guild Quests!). For an FPS, that would be truly, truly ground breaking. That kind of open-world experience is present in preciously few games, and to have it in an FPS would be very unique, as well as an extraordinarily fun, massively addicting experience.

Plus, it would be something that games like CoD and Battlefield would never be able to emulate (they're stuck on our little planet). Bungie would have an entire section of the FPS genre all to themselves.

If Bungie takes Destiny takes this path, I know I would probably disregard many, many games because I'd be so wrapped up in it.

Like Galactic Civilizations, but focusing on FPS gameplay, having multiplayer, having huge starmaps and planets, being also like Elder Scrolls and being kind of like Halo. I would buy and play for quite a long time.
Still, there is the problem of leveling and working towards stuff. Maybe have quests for XP and Credits($). However, they should add something innovative to the character growing experience. Also the gameplay.
I hope Destiny will be akin to the very first FPS or RTS, although it will be the very first in it's genre. That is what I believe.

Kind of.

Whatever Bungie comes up with, my greatest hope is that they will keep a very similar version to the Armory that they put into Reach.

I loved/still love the Armory!

Add in some more options/variations to flesh out and individualize your character/person more, and I will love it even more.

If some variation (even if it only has the same number of options as Reach's Armory) is in Destiny, then I would play that game almost to the exclusion of all others.

(Except for the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim... I loves me some Elder Scrolls too. ALmost as much as I love the Halo's that Bungie made)

Do Work Son!

Bungie knows 2 genres best they mostly are good with fps shooters, but also atrategy games as well. I doubt it will be anything else. They would definently be stepping out on a limb with an mmo, but it definetely wouldnt be the first time they did that. But i think most people want another fps thats just different than halo

^ Exactly. But IMHO if they make it Open-World, then they will have an innovation that has rarely been done in an FPS before (and when it has been tried in the past, it has been mostly a failure), and it will definitely set them apart from the rest of the FPS genre.

Since the new game will also be set in space, this would definitely set it apart from their Halo days, thus breathing new life into the scene.

This type of thing would make it very difficult for any other game developer to compete directly against them.

But more importantly, it will add a new twist, a new dimension to a genre that is becoming pretty predictable. I can almost guarantee that an open-world FPS will corner the market and introduce a whole new way to play FPS's, thus ensuring the new games Legacy.
