I know this is a long shot idea. It almost certainly will never happen. I already know that, so if that's all you have to say then save your energy.

I think that is Bungie.net decided to charge everyone 1 penny to make an account, it would pretty much eliminate trolls and spammers. No more meatspin, no more repeat threads. Permabanned users would have to use a different credit/debit card to make another account. Chances are, trolls and spammers aren't going to pay any money, not even a penny, just to post stupid meatspin links or say "-blam!- you bungie".

So, what do you think of this idea? If it ever happened, would you ever agree to pay 1 cent to make an account?

This is actually the stupidest thing ever posted on B.net:

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

Maybe $1 would keep the tolls out.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

The charge would be insignificant, but the setup of a payment system/methodology would be huge.

And then, if someone paid for access (even minimally) then it might be harder to legally/ethically then turn around and deny them access to the service based on the judgement of a volunteer moderator.

I like this idea, maybe one free account per IP address. That would definitely eliminate the trolls. I doubt this would happen, but if it did this would be a great way to get rid of the trolls.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Bungie would lose thousands on charge fees and account management costs. It isn't free for companies to charge a credit card.

I would love to reduce the spam, but I don't think that's how. Just think of the spam account to normal account ratio.

Can't say that it'd be worth the trouble to be honest. I mean, could you imagine coming onto a forum expecting to create an account in order to interact with the community only to find out that you have to pay a toll to access it?

Not only that, many of our users here don't have credit cards and that would literally kill 75% of our population. Sure they could ask their parents, but who's going to say yes to something like that? "Uhm, hey mom I want to post on these forums and it costs a cent in order for me to do so.". To many uninformed parents, that's just way too sketchy.

I feel like it would also prevent new members from joining Bungie.net. How about Bungie lets a user join for free, but if he or she wants to post in the forums then they would have to pay a dollar or so.

I believe that in the U.S., it costs 12 cents to charge a credit/debit card.

But one user looking at your products, and who is comitted enough to pay even a penny to use your site is worth a lot more than 12 cents.

If Bungie charged a thousand dollars to use the site, and you agree to the terms of service, then they can deny you service for whatever they want.

It's the same reason that Xbox Live can ban people.

Donuts > all other food

Are you loco in the coco?

Why would you want Cena and the rest of the trolls gone? The trolls are what makes this website, and especially The Flood, hilarious!
