“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”

I haven't really seen the word "Jew" used as an insult on the forums, actually now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever really even seen the word used here.

Same here.

If you're reading this, congratulations. You've just pressed a button to find out a little bit more about me. Not that you will, but well done anyway.

I've never seen the word Jew used on these forums in a derogatory manner, its not as common as many of the words blocked by the profanity filter. Moreover, if a topic was made about Judaism, people would be within their rights to use the word Jew in the proper context (not that that should happen, given the views on religious discussion).

If a person were to use the word in a derogatory manner, and enough people saw and reported it, then that person would be banned for being an idiot, and rightly so; as is the case of those who rather simply bypass the filter. All wrongdoing is eventually dealt with; there is no reason to add the word Jew to the list of banned words.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

The fewer terms in the filter, the better I would feel about our community.

Many filtered words and many non-filtered words have multiple meanings and connotations. Some acceptable, some not-so-acceptable. Most times the usage and context are what determine the speakers intent to use the term in either a malicious or non-malicious manner.

I like the fact that our members can see the intent for themselves, report it if they deem it necessary and inappropriate and that will bring it to the attention of my colleagues and I. I also know that the ninjas will also determine the posters intent if/when we see such a post ourselves.

So as far as I am concerned? Thanks, but no. I would rather be working towards the goal of removing words from the filter because our membership is more responsible in their use and more involved in the reporting and discouragement of the abuse of filtered terms.

Oly Oly Oxen Free

Basically, what you're saying is that because you got banned for using Jew offensively, the word itself should be banned in case you're stupid enough to do it again.

Stop being ridiculous and play nice instead.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

So if there is a discussion about backgrounds, or religion is brought up as part of a discussion in a private group, and someone wants to mention that they are Jewish, they are going to be filtered?

Not only is that one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard, but now you'd start to offend some people by saying their religion or ethnicity is inappropriate. What's next, censoring the word black?

This is pretty ridiculous, and a terrible idea. Filters are meant to punish people who inappropriately use language, not to prevent intelligent people who can handle the responsibility of using words from having reasonable discussion. Not only is your suggestion a bad one, I'm sure that some people would be highly offended

You may not have seen it because my colleagues and I (and your fellow members) were all "doing our job".

It's not frequent, but I personally end up banning members at a rate of 2-3/month for using this term as a slur. If that's me, multiply that by the other ninja and it's not all that infrequent. I would imagine that the percentage of our members who think that anti-semitic terms and slurs are part of everyday conversation closely matches the same percentage in the general population.

"What if I'm -blam!- and I mention I'm -blam!-? But the word is censored because apparently being -blam!- is offensive. "

I am being ironic to prove a point.
Your irony seems lost on most, so maybe you should try another tactic. Like, for example, being direct and forthcoming.

Does anyone even read these?

I lolled at the title but am now thinking the OP is serious.

x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

Good idea. While we're at if lets also censor black, white, Asian, Arab, Latino/a, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Shinto.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"

I use the term Christian as an insult.

It should be censored!

I understood the OP's point, if we're going to censor one term because of potential abuse, why not all potentially abused terms?

My response was written in case the OP was being direct and serious, or was attempting to show the inconsistency in the current method.

As I said, I would like to think that we as a community are working towards the goal of removing terms from the filter (by demonstrating our maturity and civility) rather than adding terms due to our community becoming less mature and civil.

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I think that the only words that should be in the profanity filter should be words who's sole meaning is derogatory. This would allow some words to be dropped, and others to be added, such as 'Retard'. ('Jew' isn't one of them.)

As to words that could be used as an insult, I say let the mods ban those who use them in that manner. That is, after all, why they're there, isn't it?

How about the word "Dick"? I don't think i've seen that referring to a persons name since 2008.

I see that now. I don't know you well enough to make that my initial guess. You do bring up a point, but there has to be a cutoff somewhere. It is Bungie's website, so who better to determine the cutoff than them?
