Subject: Brute Chieftain vs Spartan (Chieftain vs Cal)

Note, to start I'll point out why I believe the fight was exaggerated from what 'really' happened.

A: In many shots the chieftain is shown to be twice the size or more then Cal. Cal is, assuming she's typical, around 7 feet tall in armor. Brutes are 9 feet+. So, there would be height difference but not that drastically.
B: Power armor had no shields. I've yet to see any proof that'd point otherwise.
C: The brute being mildly clumsy/slow(despite the fact they aren't.), and Cal bouncing around like a ninja.

http://www.twitch.tv/knitepanda/b/258589541?id=258589541& %20channel=knitepanda 9:35 is roughly the start of the fight, but I'll place a blow by blow description(of hits) anyway.

Start off with Cal struggling to hold back the Chieftains hammer. With a roar, the chieftain swings the hammer *AND THE SPARTAN*, sending Cal and the ODST flying. Cal dodges two hits from the gravity hammer(the only two of the entire fight where the gravity hammer even does a little of what it normally does on a hit with the hammerhead)

Next blow we actually see if Cal doing a flying, kick into the Chieftains chest which does nothing more then send him into the river. After a number of ninja bounces and dodges, Cal gets a single punch in between the Chieftain's armor plating into his gut. Total damage: Lost his lunch and some breath.

THEN, we see a point which clearly supports my exaggeration theory. Cal is standing DIRECTLY beside the Gravity hammer striking the riverbed. In all other halo media with gravity hammers, at that range the target would be affected. Whether it's killed or sent flying depends. (Also, the fact the chieftain just sat there and stared at Cal instead of recovering and instantly striking *which he should have, and could have*...)

Cal then does an elbow strike against the chieftain, cracking helm and bruising his eye. Followed up with a kick to the same spot which causes him to be stunned more and do a roar.

Cal kicks the chieftain center of chest and he goes rolling over the edge of the waterfall.

While the time is unknown, I'd say it's the next morning when they are in the sniper spot. Chieftain arrives, the only damage done on him? Bruised eye. Cal tosses the ODST aside and has a "deer in headlights" expression pose. Meaning she honestly didn't think the Chieftain would still be alive. She takes the gravity hammer to the face, and dies.

So, intelligent folk here. Can you honestly, without a doubt, say Cal 'wiped' the floor with the chieftain? Take into account how little damage she actually did, including the massive waterfall fall. The chieftain was able to accurately track the humans despite a bloodied eye(+ time to get back to those ruins from the waterfall + possibly being swept downriver some) and caught up to them rather quickly.

Edit: Or, since ass-kicking seems to not be centered around damage dealt, do you know that was anything close to how a chieftain would behave during a fight?

Cause I know for a fact trying to melee and brute hammer chieftain in Reach or halo three is a stupid idea, as they'll quickly and accurately smash their hammers into your face.

I say she was lucky to have survived the first encounter at all.

I find it somewhat amusing that you decided to create a whole new thread on this.

The only point I agree with is the lack of splash damage shown when the Hammer impacted close to Cal.

We all know that you are extremely biased on this encounter. Let me ask you then, do you think the Brute won the fight? Lmao.

The fact is, The Spartan dodged every single swing, and counter attacked with punches and kicks. The Brute LOST the fight. He did not even land a SINGLE hit.

Now, your last point about engaging a Chieftain in Reach really gave me a good laugh. Do you know how easy it is to kill Chieftain's using Melee only? Here's the trick: You don't stand there like an idiot and watch as the hammer slowly descends on your head.

You melee once, step back to dodge the swing, and melee again. When they do that spin move, you can walk around them and get off two melee's, then jump back to avoid another blow. Repeat a few times, and the Chieftian is dead.

United Armed Forces

Brutes in H3 and Reach are severely "dumbed down". They should behave like they did in H2, smacking you around like you're nothing. All brutes have extensive experience in Hand to hand, and 90% of the time would beat a spartan or a sangheili in unarmed combat.

However: I've constantly seen in the "Motion Comics" that 343 throws out so much crap that wouldn't really happen. In reality, most close range encounters with a brute and a spartan would result in the brute winning, especially a chieftain.

I am the God Emprah of Mankind.

Deal with it.

The Chieftain killed the Spartan, I don't see how the Spartan won.

  • 08.24.2011 4:47 PM PDT

I just faced off in melee with a brute chieftain in Reach. I even mimicked Cal by jumping over the chieftain. I lost half my health by doing that. Then, after dodging a blow and going in for a melee the brute turned and smacked the ground beside me. I died.

The brute may not have won the first encounter, but neither did Cal.

Personally I'd never consider that an ass kicking. Dodging every strike and barely doing damage? She got lucky(aka plot shield) and knocked the brute off the waterfall before she started slowing down.

Regardless of the holes (such as the brute appearing twice her height at times, the fact when she jumped OVER him he'd really just reach up, grab a leg and slam her down, and the slam attack in the riverbed would've stunned her and send her flying...) I don't see how you call that an ass kicking.

Biased? Yes. I am biased against stupidity. Biased against those who worship the spartans and ignore clear cases of them being outmatched.

Edit: A: I made this thread so it can be discussed without derailing other topics. Sue me for following the rules.
B: When have I ever implied the brute won? Never. I simply state the Spartan did not kick his ass.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

Halo Legends should not be used as definitive proof for anything due to the amount of artistic liberties that it takes; in this case, a Spartan-II's capabilities. That scene is likely for the sake of "OMG awesum" rather than a true depiction.

I dunno, I know a forum is for discussion, but some things have been settled for a long time, and the canon qualities of Halo legends is an issue long dead.

Heavy artistic license was used for every episode in Legends. Most of what occurs therein is not considered canon. It's just fanciful tales from the universe. Some of the occurrences might be based in some story truth, but the way they are represented takes plenty of liberties.

Sorry if that seems direct or rude, but I honestly thought most of us had grasped this concept by now.

Excellent six, I did not go in Reach to 'recreate' the fight. I went in to show that "Killing a chieftain with melee" is not pathetically easy as Jonzx said.

Jobe, yep, most of us understand this. Bar Jonzx. He seems to be constantly saying Cal won that fight and kicked ass. Since it was derailing threads I made this topic. It was also to show that 99% of people don't believe Cal 'kicked the chieftain's ass'.

Firstly, I would like to say that if you are getting killed in Melee with ANY enemy in Reach, you must not be very skilled.

Try it again. When the Chieftain swings, move back, than move foward again to melee. You can jump over his head and melee him on top of his head in mid are as well (I dont see how you failed there). When he does his spin move, walk around him and smack him. When he leaps at you, simply side step and smack him again. It's stupid easy.

I'm pretty amused everytime you mention that I think Spartan's are "gods" or something similar. Now you are just trolling and putting words into my mouth. I have asked you to stop multiple times, yet you continue to make up things that I have never, ever said. You really need to shut up with that bull-blam!-, as it just detracts from your credibility even more.

Biased? Yes. I am biased against stupidity. Biased against those who worship the spartans and ignore clear cases of them being outmatched.

^ This made me laugh. Not only are you putting words into my mouth for the fifth time strait after I asked you to stop nicely, but you think that Cal was outmatched in the fight?

Lmao. In which sense was she outmatched? In the sense that she dodged every single blow thrown at her, jump kicked the Brute putting him on his ass, continued to evade hammer swings, and skillfully counter-attacked? Please, enlighten me

Starting to not take you serious anymore.

She got lucky(aka plot shield)

^So you just admitted that she WON the fight, and than mentioned that it was a plot shield that made her win? Lmao. So everytime a Spartan wins, its a plot shield? That does not even make sense for this episode, She dies anyways, how the hell is this fight in any sense a plot shield

100% not taking you seriously anymore.

Its too bad, Daefaron is too ignorant and blinded by fanboyism to see that Cal used her martial prowess to win the fight.

Hey Daefaron, not doing so well without your little pet Grey101 assisting you in making things up and twisting around facts eh?

So when did she win a fight exactly? Last time I checked that Cheiftan killed Cal. Fanboyism? You are the one obbsessed with spartans.

Funny the only fanboy I see here is you. I mean hell if you weren't so..idiotic for lack of better words, this debate might have been something interesting but you spewing bias and above all else Trolling on Daefaron for beating you and your Alting ass a while back, had to go and ruin it but none the less I'll point out why you're wrong.

She's outmatched because it's a skilled and ultimatly stronger brute chieften. Of course you see the anime bull -blam!- as truth so I'll continue.

If the fight was prolonged she would've been killed right there.

And now we go to your plot shield response. Yes it was a plot shield for her not to die right there so she could save the ODST later on. For that fact you now attack Daefaron for using intelligence when saying yes it was in fact a plot shield that she had gotten lucky.

Perhaps you should read up on how strong a brute really is.

Also you're putting words into your own mouth as you so stated that Cal would win just cause and 99% of people agree with you..that must mean 99% of people lack intelligence.

Yea, and I see no one here supporting you with intelligent thought jonzx. You are the biased one here. You continually defend cal, but all she did was hurt his eye, he killed her.

You seriously need to chill out. He has a completely valid point, the Brute should have done better because they're much larger and stronger than a Spartan, and Cal should not have had such an easy time with the fight.

And DaeFaron is not some blind fanboy, he raises many good points and arguments on many issues, you would do well to cease your personal attacks. Nor is Grey DaeFarons pet or anything, in fact, you'll find them having a debate with each other more often than you will them teaming up, but it's obvious that they respect each other and can keep their disagreements civil, unlike you.

OT: As I said above, I think the Brute should have done much better than he did and Cal should have had a far, far harder time in the fight. However, I don't think that just because the Brute is bigger and stronger that he would automatically win, Brutes tend to not be very smart fighters because they let their arrogance and rage get in the way of their better judgement in a fight. I don't really find it that odd that Cal beat the Brute the first time.

It's funny how the moment I throw out an insult, everyone jumps on my back. If you read the other thread, you will know that he brought up this whole "uncivil" stuff when he kept quoting me saying "Spartan's are gods who can do anything" - Something which I have never ever said to be true.

I have asked him to stop lying about things I never said multiple times, yet he elects to continue doing so. Don't give me any of the "keep it civil" crap untill he takes back what he says, and for once, actually admitts a mistake instead of continuing to twist it around and around.

I just faced off in melee with a brute chieftain in Reach. I even mimicked Cal by jumping over the chieftain. I lost half my health by doing that. Then, after dodging a blow and going in for a melee the brute turned and smacked the ground beside me. I died.

Personally I'd never consider that an ass kicking. Dodging every strike and barely doing damage? She got lucky(aka plot shield) and knocked the brute off the waterfall before she started slowing down.

Regardless of the holes (such as the brute appearing twice her height at times, the fact when she jumped OVER him he'd really just reach up, grab a leg and slam her down, and the slam attack in the riverbed would've stunned her and send her flying...) I don't see how you call that an ass kicking

Are you pats on head mentally Ill ?
You're using the limited movements of the halo reach chieften to simulate that fight ?

Lucky ??! Herp Derp, maybe...I don't know it has something to do with skill.
Her martial prowess allowed her to dodge those blows and react timely to each attack.
And yeah its exaggerated its anime...

Its too bad, Daefaron is too ignorant and blinded by fanboyism to see that Cal used her martial prowess to win the fight.

Hey Daefaron, not doing so well without your little pet Grey101 assisting you in making things up and twisting around facts eh?

Funny the only fanboy I see here is you. I mean hell if you weren't so..idiotic for lack of better words, this debate might have been something interesting but you spewing bias and above all else Trolling on Daefaron for beating you and your Alting ass a while back, had to go and ruin it but none the less I'll point out why you're wrong.

Enlighten me.

She's outmatched because it's a skilled and ultimatly stronger brute chieften. Of course you see the anime bull -blam!- as truth so I'll continue.

^ Great demonstration of fanboyism. Please tell me how she was outmatched in any sense. I asked Daefaron the same question, and he has yet to respond.

Cal was the one demonstrating great skills, reflexes, and precision against a physically stronger opponent with a superior weapon. The Chieftain was clearly outmatched.

The Chieftain missed every single swing, but could not dodge or counter even a single blow from Cal.

Great skills eh? Yeah....he was SO CLEARLY outmatched

If the fight was prolonged she would've been killed right there.

This is hilarious. "If" the fight was prolonged. First of all, how the hell do you know what would happen "If" the fight was prolonged?

Are you psychic? No.
Did you write the Halo stories? No.

Half of your point is fantisizing about what YOU think should have happened, the other half is you pulling statements out of your ass with nothing to back them up.

And now we go to your plot shield response. Yes it was a plot shield for her not to die right there so she could save the ODST later on. For that fact you now attack Daefaron for using intelligence when saying yes it was in fact a plot shield that she had gotten lucky.

Another classic. "Oh, the Spartan won simply due to a plot shield lolol". Wait a second, but diddn't you say that she was outmatched in the previous paragraph? Hmmm...Contradiction much?

Perhaps you should read up on how strong a brute really is.

We are all fully aware that Brute's are physically stronger than Spartan's. You have demonstrated to us your lack of intelligence in this statement. Physical strength does not by any means determine the outcome of a fight, as demonstrated by Cal vs the Chieftain. The Chieftain did not manage to hit Cal a single time.

Also you're putting words into your own mouth as you so stated that Cal would win just cause and 99% of people agree with you..that must mean 99% of people lack intelligence.

Hang on, you are accusing me of lacking intelligence when you just completely disreguarded all facts, made up your own version of what you thought should have happened, stated that the Brute outmatched Cal and had more skill while in reality he missed every single hit, and could not counter or dodge any of Cal's hits.

Not even a single one of your "points", has any backup. You are practically talking strait out of your ass. Wake up, you diddn't write Halo, you don't decide what happens. And you have the dignity to call me a fanboy?
