Subject: Dead Spartan in Lone Wolf (Not Noble 6)

Why is it everyone assumes that the red team Jun mentions is the S-II red team? I would think from the fact that he said red, gauntlet, and echo teams that it means they are S-III teams. Just because some team has red team as its name doesn't mean another team can't have that name.

  • 08.25.2011 11:15 AM PDT

Its very possible but Color team names are usually used with S-IIs while S-IIIs were named after blades. Reach changed that with Noble team though so it is possible that Gauntlet, Echo, and Red are S-IIIs. I was under the impression that they were standard Marine/Army teams though.

Agreed I thought they were S-III teams but I also thought they could have been marine/army teams. But considering that Carter says the transmissions are classified they are probably S-III's or teams of ODST's with like an ONI agent with them.

Bungie sure gave a damn about canon on this level.

More like the whole game.

Anyway, there are dead spartans by most of the power weapons scattered around the area.

At the end of New Alexandria, I think it is Jun who mentions two teams, implied to be Noble-size S-III teams. It could be those.

when is this? if so that would break cannon again *sigh*.
"Sir, is it true about Gauntlet, Red and Echo teams being assigned to evacuation ops?"
"Those are senior-level communique-"
etc.

We know Red, but Gauntlet and Echo are the two he means.

I haven't read the appropriate book(s), did Red Team get assigned to evac ops - i.e. did we know that from other sources before Reach came out?

Red Team was assigned to the defence of the SMAC generators when Operation RED FLAG went south, so Jun is talking bollocks because Red Team weren't even fighting the Covenant before the 30th.

There was 2 weeks of (full scale) fighting before the events int he book happened. It would only make sense that in the new canon, the S-IIs were fighting then as well.

Actually, if you look at it, it seems bungie moved the events that happened on aug 30th back to aug 14 (the covenant fleet arriving, the whole "60% of the UNSC fleet is en route to Reach). They want you to imagine it playing out over 2 weeks vs a day, so there is a lot of room for red team to be doing other stuff as well, and you can imagine the events in the book get spread out over those two weeks, too.

I keep reading people comparing book dates vs. dates in the game. When Noble 6 dies, Reach isn't just immediately lost. I mean, the game's over, but there's still fighting on the planet after the events of the game, isn't there? It could just be me having read the book awhile back, but I don't remember it saying anywhere exactly how long the Battle of Reach lasted, just they day that Reach was glassed. And by that I mean, I don't remember any sort of specific time between initial Covenant invasion to the glassing being stated anywhere.

But please, I know a ton of you guys have delved much deeper into the canon and the expanded story than I have, so by all means correct me if I'm wrong. I would love an explanation.

The book would have us believe that the covenant fleet showed up on august 30th and for the most part obliterated the planet that same day.

The game would have us believe on Jul 24-Aug 14, there was a single scout ship attacking Reach, then the full fleet arrived late August 14th, and Reach was ultimately lost on aug 30th, with the last ship on the planet (Pillar of Autumn) barely making it off in tact, thanks to noble 6.

Some people try to say that both storylines fit together. Technically they can, but it makes very little sense if done that way. On august 14th, auntie dot said "60% of the UNSC fleet is en route to reach, eta 24 hours".

So they want me to believe that even though 60% of the UNSC fleet was already set to defending Reach on Aug 14, somehow the pillar of autumn and her crew was completely unaware of it until august 30th, as in the book? Even though the planet was already partially on fire at that time?

I strongly believe Bungie figured we'd be smarter than that, put 2+2 together, and realize that the events that occur in the books august 30th are now happening on august 14th, and then expanded and filled in to now span 2 weeks, ending on august 30th, thinking that a one day battle does not do the planet justice.

That still does not explain the POA being on Reach...or where master cheif was at that time, but I'm not saying bungies perfect.

Ah, okay. That makes sense. Thank you. And I agree, it wouldn't be quite as epic with a one-day battle. The game wouldn't be nearly as fun that way. There'd be no sense of a fight at all, it would just seem like an instant loss with no hope of fighting back. Kinda like when you go into matchmaking and the other 3 people on your team back out at the start of the match lol.

By the way, i went through the cutscene again with some friends, and we picked up a line of dialogue asking "Why would they assign Spartans to EVAC duty?" I guess they really were Spartan teams?

This is evidence that supports the "TFORs battle has been retconned to 2 weeks instead of the previous 1 day" argument.

It was brought back to the top again because someone posted on it, this is how these forums work.

That said, the question has been mostly answered so I guess we don't really need to post on it anymore.

2.I said that my keyboard is messed up, that means i pres a but sometomes it types b... same goes for the numbers

It's easier just to say "I messed up and typed a '7' instead of a '2' because I wasn't paying attention" than make up unbelievable excuses, just a wee life tip...

I'm not trying to trying to wind you up mate, so just chill, it was just a passing comment.
It just seemed really odd that typing a 2 could result in a 7, they aren't close enough for that usually, and it would take a very very strange fault in the keyboard to do that.

No, but it would be perfectly true to say that you didn't do enough revision, or your understanding of the topic needed further work.

I've not been 'arguing' with you, this was my first post on the conversation. I wasn't intending you to take it so personally, it was just a passing comment. If your keyboard really is messed up just take a minute to check over what you have typed.

Not trying to offend anybody here or start anything I don't feel like getting into, just saying, have you ever gotten a keyboard really wet before? Stuff like that is pretty common for weird things like that to happen.

Regardless, at this point, those Spartans could be anything. When Halo first started, all we had were Spartan 2's, most of whom were killed by the time Halo 3 came out. Next, we have an even more super-secret project of Spartan 3's. All of these Spartan 3's were supposed to have been whiped out, aside from a couple of survivors and instructors. Next, we learned that some of those super-secret Spartans were pulled out of their super-secret projects in an even more super-secret way and turned into Headhunters. Next, we see Noble Team, who are a bunch of super-super-secret Spartan 3's wearing fully customizable Mk V Mjolnir armor and fighting alongside a random Spartan 2 that nobody has ever heard about.

If you were to go back in time to right about when Ghosts of Onyx came out and posted on this forum about Noble Team, everybody would laugh in your face and immediately say Spartan 3's were not on Reach, only wore SPI armor, and that a Spartan 2 would have a lot better things to be doing than to be hanging around those lowly Spartan 3's.

Now, people have been speculating about a project that had a second class of Spartan 2's. I'm not endorsing this theory and I have absolutely no proof to back it. But, just like there may have been an S2 Class 2, for all we know the dead Spartan 3's in this level are Spartan 3 v2's developed by someone else.

Again, I don't want people jumping down my throat for saying this. It's just over the course of Halo history we've seen a lot more Spartans that were previously never even acknowledged playing huge roles in the story.

I noticed that when I got to Lone Wolf after playing through the entire solo campaign on Legendary (good riddance to that b.s.), I noticed that by the sniper rifle on the edge of the map, there was a dead spartan lying on the ground. It wasn't any of the Nobles, and it definately wasn't me or any of my friends' corpses, so I didn't know what the deal was with it. I don't remember the entire armour config, I just remember it was sort've a light pink-ish colour with a CQC or Grenadier helmet. I was just wondering if this was supposed to be some legendary easter egg or just a normal detail on the map?

Dude, how did you not notice other spartans around the mission on other difficulties as well? they appear on all difficulties and are just mere randomly generated corpses to symbolise the amount of spartans who died on reach

I always find it surprising when someone accuses Bungie of breaking canon any time the story doesn't conform to their assumptions.

If something unexpected is presented then it's more reasonable to take that as an indication that there are things you don't know...rather than accusing Bungie of , somehow, getting their own story wrong.

As far as i know its nothing to do with an easter egg there are 14 7+7 which plays into bungie's fav numbr being 7

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Those are probably, canonically anyway, the remnants of Gauntlet and Echo Teams. it doesn't exactly break much canon to be honest. We know Spartan-IIIs were getting pulled out for a variety of reasons and not every spot on the roster was filled. We have Headhunters and NAV/SPECWAR groups like Noble, not hard to imagine that is where the dead Spartans come from.

  • 09.13.2011 3:24 PM PDT

Hey, now!

This is officially either the greatest or worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars. I'm going with the former.
