With all the Crimson news and stuff, I've been getting even more hyped for Bungies next project, rumored to be called "Destiny" (not confirmed at all btw).
I guess, finally, I'll post an in depth look at what I personally would like to see in the new Bungie IP. For the ease of reading, I'll attempt to separate the "sections" of my discussion with dividers (empty quotes).
First of all, I'd like it to be an MMOFPS. That said, I don't think you should always have to have a gun physically in your hand, lowered or otherwise. People don't do that in the real world even if they are in the military.
In addition, I would love to see these rumored 5 factions, (New Monarchy, Dead Orbit, Osiris, Seven Seraphs, and FWC [Future War Cult, allegedly]) incorporated into the game. It's like a Horde/Alliance situation like in WoW but more diverse. You aren't blindly picking between two sides because one looks cooler, or ones the "bad" side, or one has a Night Elf and the other has an Orc. But, rather, you would pick between the factions based on their politics.
Each faction would come with both an in depth version and a quick synopsis (TL;DR version) of the factions history, position in the current conflict happening between the five, reasons for being in the conflict, etc... etc... This would give more meaning to the selection of your faction and a bigger distinction between the people who had chosen each faction.
Of course there would be those who choose, say, New Monarchy cause the name sounds cool or Seven Seraphs cause they like the logo. But, there would be the option present to make an informed decision on start up.
Another thing that I've been wanting to see in an MMO for a long time, is constantly updating events in the conflict. Say the story of the game involves a war of some kind. Then provide constant events that are happening like "The Seven Seraphs have taken over a mining colony on [insert whatever made-up planet/continent name here you want]".
It doesn't have to be something like that, in fact it doesn't have to be related to a war at all, but if the factions are implemented I'd like to see constant updating events (one of which COULD BE a war).
Even if it's little insignificant things like a trade agreement or a weapons depot exploding, little things to give the game the feel of having a legitimate timeline in their experience.
This is a big mistake I think Blizzard made with WoW. Everything seems to be happening simultaneously and there's no real concept of time apart from the fact that your guild has a raid scheduled on Saturday night. The timeline was only ever advanced when one of the 3 expansions were released.
In between was a year or 2 of stagnant time where nothing really happened to affect the world. Its as if everything revolves around your player doing things and the world doesn't exists if he/she's not there.
This real time event system could also be implemented for bigger events. Say a big political disagreement or the aforementioned war is started, this could cause players to change factions or go fight in said war etc... etc... Or what if a city gets nuked or attacked or "raided" by players from another faction? That city should show effects of it and be updated in real time.
I know this is asking quite a bit but, if we can have games like Bad Company 2 with destructible environments, why can't those environments stay destructed until money is raised to get the city back into working order?
I know I'm getting very specific and its now turning into Destiny fan fiction of a sort but, my basic point in that rant is that I want the game (if an MMO) to have a sense of a legitimate and active timeline rather than be frozen in time until an update comes.
Another thing that's more of an idea than a hope for the game is patches implemented via updates to the game. I know MMO's on a grand scale get patched quite a bit (I think WoW is like every 2 weeks or something like that?) but if we could have a constantly updating console game that is also an MMO, that would be one little thing Bungie could do that could easily revolutionize the console gaming industry. And for big updates that are just below like an expansion pack, a title update (and the PS3 equivalent, idk if they're called something else).
I've spoken about this before, maybe even in this thread, but I'm going to talk about it again. Because I believe this could really put Bungie on the map as a really big developer to be reckoned with. Well, more so than they already are.
Okay, so let's continue to assume that this is going to be an MMOFPS as some people are assuming (and I'm hoping) it is. That would mean that, if it gets anywhere near as popular as I'm hoping it does, dedicated servers from Bungie. Well, to increase the connection of their fanbase since it is almost confirmed (I believe, I can't find the link where I read about it right now) that this new project "Destiny" will be on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 (the latter 2 for sure).
What if they found a way to easily implement cross platform gaming. I mean, you could go do a "quest" (or whatever the equivalent would be) with 2 xbox players, a ps3 player, and 3 PC players all in your party. Cross platform gaming on dedicated servers and, dare I say it, cross platform voice chat? (I honestly don't even know if that request is technically sound or possible.)
But that would for sure give Bungie a bigger fanbase. PS3 and PC gamers not familiar with Bungie could be easily welcomed into the community by the veteran Xbox gamers and it would give the whole community a more "united" (for lack of a better word) feel. I feel most games that are released cross platform (say for example 360 and PS3) will have a 360 community and a PS3 community, even if both are multiplayer largely due to the fact that they cannot play together (and they have different means of controlling the game via their controllers but thats a much lesser issue).
Anyway, that's my "wishlist" for this new IP. Please discuss and, obviously, continue to promote the thread with your own ideas. :)
Of course this is all circumstantial to them making an MMOFPS... but.... whatever.
TL;DR: I wanna mmofps with stuff nd junk... whatta u want??!?
