Compared to the other Halo video games, the animations in Halo: Reach, (Most notable in game Spartans, not cut scenes.) are very unnatural. The reason for this is because of the new 'advanced' animation system of recording a guy in black tights with sensors attached to him and then recorded and put onto a computer.

Although the technology is very advanced and wonderful, it did not fit the game very well. Why? Because the characters in game are unrealistically buff, with bulky armor. So as you would guess, a 5'7" skinny guy in black tights, might not give off an accurate animation. He can act like he is a unrealistically buff guy with bulky armor on all he wants, it's just not going to look natural. Especially for a video game where a character is constantly jumping, and strafing. It's just not going to look natural.

The animations in Halo 1-3 were great, and had style, Halo: Reach on the other hand.. you get the idea.

Um, I didn't feel they were unnatural.

Care to give examples other then "The motion capture dude MIGHT have been skinny"?

Do you actually see a person irl jumping from point A to point B?

"Where ere thou hast been, here or in yon world manifest? Canst thou tell what is, or what was, or what is to come? No thing shall last. Yet there are some things that will never change. History is written in blood, yet are battles really lost on the battlefield? Canst thou tell me where thou comest, and where thou goest, and what is, or what was, or what will be? For everything remains, AS IT NEVER WAS."

I would like to point out that in the Halo Universe, the Spartans moved in a very "unnatural" manner.

Which is ironic because motion capture is used for them. But the mo-cap makes them look so bulky and slow, so it doesn't work either way.

I disagree. I believe that Reach had some of the best animations in any of the games.

Are you serious? If anything Gears of War is incredibly worse! Halo animations in Reach to me were flawless.

Couldn't agree more.

The animations were great in cutscenes but I agree that the Spartan animations were odd in gameplay but so were the 'normal sized' marines.

....Well then doesn't that mean all of the animations ever in all the Halo games looked unnatural? Because they do?

I don't see why you're complaing about this now. Jumping sideways while strafing an enemy in multiplayer, and still keeping the gun in exactly one position the entire time, doesn't look natural.

"Wake me...when you need me."

I thought they looked better in Reach than in previous installments.

I have an Masters Degree in Animation. Specifically 3D computer animation.

I'm afraid you are mistaken :)

Using MoCap, it's virtually imposible to have unrealistic animations. Assuming they have been cleaned up by someone half competant (which I assure you they were) the only way the animations could look unnatural would be the differing thickness of the armour parts layered over the skeleton. In which case it's even more realistic because that's how they would have moved were they wearing the armour :)

Whippin' 'nades since aught-2

I especially dislike the assasination animations. They look very stylised in a Japanese way. Maybe an allusion to Oni, I dunno, but not to my taste.
