Subject: 'Golden Text' - a curse or a blessing?

Take a look at this thread for me.

As soon as Jeremiah posts, the whole thread is derailed. Any sense of coherence or 'normality' (or what can be considered as 'normal' on these forums...) is lost, and the thread turns into a game of 'quote the Bungie employee'.

Whilst I am all for Bungie employees adding their 2 cents into discussion threads (in fact, I love the fact that they are so well integrated within our community), it has to be said that every thread becomes a cluster--blam!- of random, nonsense quoting and off-topic conversation.

So...what can be done about this? Would removing the 'Golden Septagon' from the side of the thread cure this problem? I'm pretty sure that much of the problem is down to the fact that people can easily see which threads have employee posts within them, which in turn attracts more quoting of the employees.

I am a member of other gaming community forums, and this never seems to be an issue. In fact, game devs and community managers can post freely, and actually expect conversations with the fans, rather than randomly being quoted for the sake of it.

So Septagon...what do you think? Am I the only one who is actually bothered by this? I am not asking for Bungie to stop posting in threads, but at the same time the off-topic remarks make it hard to concentrate on the theme of a thread.

What do you guys think?

Yea, I'd agree, even with the Moderators. Once either of them post the Thread becomes a disaster.

"OMG IT ITI ITIITIITS BUNGLE!!!"

I ignore it. They're people just like us. There's still a 50% possibility that what they post isn't worth reading anyway.

I sense irony coming into play here...

Yea, it's kind of annoying that everyone feels the need to quote a Bungie employee and just derail the topic... Hmm, remove the Septagon eh? Everyone wouldn't click it... I don't see why not! Down with the septagon!

No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

I like the gold septagon appearing beside the thread; it tells me that this thread, unlike most others, may have an official response.

As far as people quoting Bungie employees simply for the sake of quoting them/trying to get recognition, yeah, it's pretty irritating when they cause the thread to degenerate from a worthwhile conversation into a glorified ass-kissing session.

Best way to handle that would simply be for the froum ninjas (and the Bungie employees themselves) to crack down on people who are getting too far off-topic: delete the meaningless quote posts, the BS posts where people suck up to employees, etc...

I'd say that the reason you don't see this happen on other gaming sites is simply because their forum moderators and employees are cleaning out the trash and forcibly keeping everything on the original topic.

I love that Bungie interacts with their community on a pretty regular basis and I certainly don't want to see them stop visiting their own forums or be forced to do so under anonymous accounts so we can't identify who they really are. And really, the ninjas and Bungie shouldn't have to do anything, but it's become painfully obvious that the bulk of the community here isn't mature enough to keep themselves in check.

Now selling HHDDVVDDBVDs. HD DVDs, but with better marketing.

There is an overwhelming sense of kissassery (say it to yourself slowly). I don't participate in other gaming communities that much because I don't have the time, so I can't speak to what does or doesn't occur there.

What I do know is this: Bungie forums remind me of playground arguments. Two kids start yelling at each other and people pick sides. If someone else comes along, puts in their own two cents, and hopes to resolve anything, then they won't get far without yelling as well. When the popular kids join an argument, the bystanders start to chime in a bit, hoping that some of the awesome will ware off on them.

I think that this is also the reason Bnet sees so much more hatred than other websites, or so I have heard.

Does anyone even read these?

Wow that thread turned to crap after he posted in it.

If it's because of that I say remove it. Actually, I say remove different coloured text for all members (mods and employees).

To be fair, he did try to tell them not to derail the thread.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

Actually, I say remove different coloured text for all members (mods and employees).

The forums would fall into anarchy!

OT: I think that's a reason why most Bungie employees choose not to get golden text or don't post at all. (Aside from separating work an spare time)

I personally like the golden septagon/salmon text, It brings variety to this site.

Wow, that thread just goes downhill after Jeremiah posted.
I'm surprised he used a -blam!-, not really disappointed, but still fairly shocked.

For an employee, the threads they post in do get out of hand quite quickly.
Especially in the Reach forums whenever they do decide to post there.

I suppose it is because of their position they get so much attention. I am not saying that they don't deserve it, but it seems that the power comes with it's consequenses. I'm not bothered by them posting anywhere (this is their site for their company after all) , but that is just me and possibly others. But there are people who just bask in their presence like a turtle in the sun.

It does get a little annoying at times, but I try not to let it bother me.

But I suppose it is a curse, unless they like the attention. But by how much they post, I am guess they don't.

All teh cookies.

1 huggle.

Not exactly surprising, it was the flood after all. Golden text quote storms are less frequent in this forum.

On the other hand, that's the main reason it got derailed.

The derailing seemed minimal beforehand.

Kids want to quote employees because they think they're important.

Then there are also the suck-ups.

There is so much truth in this...

The enemy of my enemy shall die next.

I know the voices in my head are not real, but they have some great ideas.

Brown chicken Brown cow!

Not huge amounts can be done really, the sensible people will quote, take on board comments and treat the addition of a golden comment the same way they would any other, maybe with a tad more respect.

The "others" will act like a big girl who has just bumped into Bieber and touched him in his special place, running around in hysterics

Thus I refute thee

I usually find that if a Bungie worker has posted in a thread then they have either made a funny comment or an insightful comment and the thread then might be interesting but I do agree that it does derail the thread

Give a warning or ban to the people quoting for the sake of quoting, it's spam and doesn't contribute to the topic at all. Don't blame the employee for having gold text or an icon showing he/she posted in a thread, blame the people who abuse this information.

I agree, though, that if the gold septagon icon (showing that an employee has posted) was not there, it would probably mean in a drop in the amount of nonsensical quoting, however I think it is a good feature to have.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Kids will be kids. There is really nothing you can do about it. I like the fact that administrators have gold text. Something special only to the administration, like the special armor permutations they receive in their games.

The thread listed in the OP is just one on those few worse case scenarios. Sure, nutt-riding will always happen when a goldy replies, but ignore it and if it gets like that, just forget the thread.

Don't get me wrong - I am in no way blaming employees for the spam. And I'm sure the Ninja's would give a little margin for a few humorous off-topic remarks...but I'm guessing than in the majority of cases, these forum-goers are let off completely.

I find you rather shallow and pedantic.

Just noticed that.

  • 08.26.2011 5:15 AM PDT

I've noticed that in all the threads here. Maybe they should be un quotable?

Which is why I was suggesting that shouldn't be the case.

No, quoting does serve an important purpose and it would be silly to remove that option for employees.
