Subject: Working at Bungie

"So shines a good deed, in a weary world..."

Hello,

I just wanted to ask a serious question regarding a career in the art department... I've always wanted to work at Bungie as a concept artist and have a BA in Art... I understand the portfolio system, as well as what your qualifications are. The main problem is that my portfolio mainly consists of sculptural pieces and I'm not sure if it's even worth submitting a resume for said concept art position? I've been working freelance as a sculptor for the last 6 years and because of this, I have much more in the way of a sculpture portfolio. I do hobby art in 2D and use Photoshop and illustrator as well as canvas art. I've dabbled in Maya as well and have a limited understanding of it.

Again, is it worth the time to submit now? Or, should I build a larger portfolio of 2D digital work?

How many concepts are generally desired in a portfolio for a generic "concept artist"?

Would my portfolio of sculptural work be worth submitting?

Thank you so much for your time.

Well if you're applying for the Concept Artist position, you're going to need to have 2D concept art pieces to show off. I'm not sure that Bungie really hires sculptors; they have modellers, but they work in a 3D software package most often, not in a physical medium. If that's your forte look into getting serious with Maya or 3D Max.

As for number of pieces, Quality > quantity. Show them your best, most polished pieces of work. Lets say, more than 5, less than a dozen. You need to wow them, not bore them by making them page through hundreds of pieces. Also pick pieces that show the width and breadth of your talent. Including interior, exterior, natural and artificial, character concepts, vehicles, weapons etc. As broad as your talent is, aim to show it in your portfolio. But if you honestly can't do weapon concepts (for example), don't throw in a crappy one: just the stuff that someone would pay you for.

So yeah, flesh out your portfolio to show that you could do the job you're actually applying for.

I do think that I'm qualified for a position and I'm very passionate about not only Bungie games, but really in moving people to care about what we have created/ are creating. I'm sort of a jack of all trades in a sense, but it's tough for me to narrow it down and focus on just 2D at times, with my life focused on sculpture. The thing that really inspires me about Bungie, are the people that work there... extremely devoted and they remind me of myself... willing to stay up late and work long hours just to finish a thought! The creative flow in that building must me amazing! I really wish to work with people who share my passion for story/art/emotion... and simply being part of something so amazing...

For those that made suggestions and comments about how/what I should do to make this happen... I thank you! Lets keep it rolling!

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

What's the worst that could happen if you submit a portfolio?

Even if they reject you "application," it would be good experience and an opportunity to get your portfolio in order.

Go for it. Either you send it in and get a rejection or an interview, or you don't and automatically get a rejection.

The only direction you can go is up.

If you're sketches/2D drawings are as high quality, I expect they'll beg you to join.

Your work is godly. I suggest you make an organized portfolio and apply. Those sculptures are... Wow.

Your Venom sculptures look like officially licensed material. That's amazing detail.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Active 9/1/11, Heroic 12/25/12

Those are professional quality. Bungie would be making a bad move not hiring you.

I will get something worked up and just give it a try! What do I have to lose right? Thank you all so much and I appreciate the awesome compliments!

I believe that sometimes we get complacent and lose our way... Surrounding ones self with great people is a sure way to remedy that and bring out the best in ourselves!

Wow.. Just wow. Amazing. You, sir, definately deserve a job.

"You dead yet? No? You will be!"

"How you like them pears? Guess what I mean by pears."

"I'm gonna rip off his partridge and kick him in the pear tree!"

Are you the one who made the Statue of Liberty?

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

Job at Bungie or no job, you're almost guaranteed to go places if you keep pursuing leads. At least that's what I'd assume. Your work is pretty outstanding.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

From the looks of it, you have other artistic skills besides your amazing abilities as a sculptor. Submitting some of your work couldn't hurt, maybe find some more work in your local area requiring skills in 2D animation and use those as some of your examples.

A gifted sculptor, indeed.

He is very good. I love his 2D art, also.

Also... its not like they couldn't use a person who can make 3D models of characters. Usually better than concept art when you have a physical object in front of you.

Chunky_Lover's Average Joe Interview

Bungie All Star Contest Winner Weeks 6,8 and 12

I find that despite companies saying you need "3 to 4 years Industry Experience" if you are talented enough you'll get a call back. I suggest read up on setting such a portfolio up for this type of scenario (I.E Games Industry) and go from there.

You should look for other contract work first, I suggest. Most companies wouldn't hire a concept artist for the remainder of the production pipeline.

I think being a freelancer counts as Industry experience. Does it not?
