Subject: Why are political discussions not allowed?

Steam - sircaleb11
Game Center - Fitchbister
PSN - TheSchnarf
Xbox Live - Cobalt Goldfish

Mein Name ist Caleb, und ich werde Deutsch sprechen FÜR DEINER MUTTER.

(This might only be for the Flood forum, as I understand it.)

I can't see people being offended in the way religious discussions can get, so why aren't politics allowed?

This isn't a petition.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I would argue that it's because people would take it too seriously and it would become a flame war.

Then you haven't been in many childish political discussions, have you?

I understand what you're saying, but that means PS3 vs. Xbox 360 or CoD vs. Halo threads should be banned.

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

- Albert Einstein

Because evidently it stirs up more flame wars than anything else in the entire Universe.

I agree with prohibiting religious discussion, because there is literally nothing to discuss without the discussion transmuting into a flamewar, but political discussions have various perspectives, and have impact on everyone's lives.

The PC vs consoles, CoD vs BF threads also generate plenty of flaming. They're not banned.

There needs to be a simple ground rule that you cannot flame. If you do, then you are banned. Not everyone resorts to flaming.

In my opinion, it seems the rule is in place because the ninjas don't want to deal with enforcing the flaming rule in those threads (also known as laziness).

Key

Because they only start flame wars and lead to name calling and mother cursing.

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

Friends who want to stay friends don't talk about two things: Religion and politics.

In other words, it starts flame-wars.

I am a Floodian

Yeah... Politics never make people crazy... ...ever

Honestly, I don't think that most members really get that upset about religion or politics during most conversations. The problem is when a troll enters the mix, and then everything goes down hill, while exploding, and on fire.

Politics and Religion are two topics that neither make friends nor are conducive to a healthy discussion.

Grown adults get upset in these debates very easily. Have you ever seen a grown man throw a tantrum because you and him have different opinions? Its pathetic.

There are chapters for those kind of topics anyways. If you don't find one suitable to your liking you can always start your own chapter and recruit for it.

I disagree.

I'll be honest, I frequently discuss politics and religion with my friends that have different political opinions and religious practices and beliefs. (I'm heavily right wing and a Baptist attending a Catholic school. There are a fair share of disagreements) Having done this for a few years, I'd say it's had nothing but a positive effect.
Discussion that seriously makes people think about and research and reaffirm the beliefs they've held dear for most of their lives is interesting and stimulating.
It is entirely possible to have healthy discussion over religion and over politics without any sort of blood pressure changes.

It just doesn't work on the internet due to anonymity and facelessness.

The topics themselves don't destroy friendships, it's the way they're handled. I would love to discuss such things, but forum managers have the choice to restrict those conversations and I have no problem respecting that. There's always plenty of other places to go to for that.

People have conflicting opinions about politics and statistics show that people get more violent when arguing about politics. Also, this is a game-developer's site - not a political analysis site.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

I am not sure you can call it laziness when the rule was put in place by user #1.

If you haven't seen political threads go downhill then you haven't seen a great deal of political threads that stuck around for more than 15 minutes. It takes longer for a politics threads to explode into madness than religion-based threads but the effect is all the same.

Those topics, however, are relevant to the site and often have fair conversation behind them. Political discussion offers neither.

Relevancy is irrelevant.

Conversation value is also irrelevant. Who's to say a political discussion is less fair conversation than talk over wiping out all mentally ill persons, abortion, or evolution?
All of these regularly devolve into flame wars quite frequently, or perhaps even right now.

In addition to that, great political discussions are had every day on radio talk shows such as Bill Bennet's "Morning in America" or on CNN's "American Morning."
Both of these are just singular examples of both sides of the political spectrum giving stimulating discussion daily.

It has no place on Bungie.net. If you really want political discussion, find a websites that does it. Or make a private group on here and get others to join.

See, that would make sense if we didn't have an off-topic forum.

Neither is it a pony or music site, but that doesn't stop them from being discussed every day in the OFF TOPIC® forums you ignoramus.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

Abortion and evolution are the same in this regard, yet those are not specifically against the rules.
