I had a thought the other day "I wonder how much a dedicated Halo server costs?" So I checked a couple of UK based providers. They quote around 430 Sterling (750US Dollars) for a years rental....!!
After I picked myself up off the floor, I soon dropped this idea. I guess if a clan is paying and sharing the costs, this may be more accepatable, but it's a lot for one Halo player. :-)

Fair play to MAW, TUI et all for providing such a service.!!

Clanservers.com hosts servers for $2/slot/month so for a 10-person server you pay $20/month. And they can setup the server in London or Amsterdam. But they only take Paypal or American currency.

Yeah, I checked around too a while ago.. and the prices varied from 25-35 USD / month for a 16 player server.

except it would run like crap. I also highly doubt he has a t3 connection(most dedicated servers from data centers have t3 or faster connctions, and you guys all know that it still lags even with that)

It doesn't matter how fast your connection is, it will always lag. The netcode is crap. But it is true that a normal home connection isn't even close to fast enough for a dedicated server.

what is it with you stone age gamers and T3? T3 isn't actually that fast. Connections are are really fast don't fall under standard types, but are named. A good example is JANET, in the uk, a 10Gigabit/second (OC192 type) network across the UK for academic use. That's fast. T3 is only 43 megabit/s, that's 200 times slower. Most reputable gamservers run on 1gbit/s each way, but i wouldn't expect anyone who still runs HPC servers to go anywhere above (or below for that matter) 100mbit/s.

for really fast connections, try OC-3072, it theoretically runs at 160Gigabit/second. yes, that's 160,000 megabits/s, that's 320,000 times the average domestic connection speed in the UK.

umm...about JANET and OC-3072...no...You see, when you host a multiplayer game, people connect to your game over the plain old, trafficky Internet. They're not attached to one of these superfast networks or like, Internet II or anything. And at least in the U.S. and Europe, the Internet itself will almost never give you better than 8 MB/s up or down, even if your modem and your Internet service are capable of giving you more. If you play over Ethernet or some kind of special network like the ones you mentioned, you can get higher than than of course, but that limits you to people who play on that particular network.

So it doesn't matter if your server is connected to Internet at 2 bazillion Gb/s, you're stuck at whatever the phone lines between the server and your players give you.

It's free. Anyone who can connect to the internet and has Halo can host a game or play in a game that someone else is hosting for free.

If you want to get less lag and no "host lag advantage", you rent a server from a hosting company that has dedicated servers and very high speed lines.
