Subject: What Attributes Maketh a Good Moderator?

1. The ability to differentiate when to be funny and serious.
2. Watching your PM Box
3. The ability to laugh off the insults and threats sent on a daily basis.

You must obtain a golden ticket that can be found under qbix's bed.

Done, done, and done. Honestly, it doesn't sound like a hard job. I'm sure it isn't that easy, but it doesn't sound difficult.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

A good eye for what's right and wrong on B.net, patience, and simply being able to back up a decision and giving understandable reasoning behind the decision if needed.

1. Be able to acknowledge that banning someone is a failure on your part. It means that you havent been active and/or present enough. I mean how many people are committing crimes when a police officer is standing right next to them, give or take a few lunatics like Cena?

2. Moderation isnt rocket science so incidents where a mod shortens a ban, a ban is being liften by a master mod or staff member or where the mod has to justify the ban and almost apologizes in PM'es shouldnt happen. Do not ban unless you're 100 % sure of what you're doing. It really is that easy.

3. Don't moderate out of the report queue. You are not a detective, you're supposed to be out there and be a part of the active community.

4. Don't spend all your posts on this forum, this is the last place that needs them.

5. Play Bungie's games or atleast pretend that you do so. It's a shame that only a minority of mods were/are participating in Halo discussions. I don't get why someone who's more or less never playing the games comes here as a volunteer to moderate. They might aswell invest in hired and paid mods instead if they're going to be completely anonymous in the area where it matters.

6. Know when to quit. We do not need you unless you're going to be active. By staying you're only giving the staff an excuse to not replace you with someone more fitting.

7. Realize that you're on many occassions dealing with kids. Older mods such as Recon seem to have grasped this and approach things in a more paternal manner while some of the younger ones just reach for the button.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”

Use your words!

Batzter, I don't believe I could have said it better myself. Everything you have outlined is what I believe a community moderator should follow. Of course, there are always exceptions, so I think the only thing I would add is that a good moderator should know when to make an exception (for example, moderating outside of the report queue).

My bad, I meant moderating by just looking at reports and then use the lack of reports as an excuse to why some violations arent dealt with. I don't expect them to catch everything, no one should expect that, but it's a bit transparent that they're not looking when they're being active in this forum at the same time as there are threads in the flood that should have been taken care of two days ago.

I guess it's just how I personally feel about it. Even in the role of a volunteer I'd feel some responsibility to take care of stuff and I would never excuse my shortcomings with " I don't have to do -blam!-". If I had no intentions of moderating some day yet wanted to enjoy the forums I'd rather sign in on an alt than to take that discussion.

  • 08.28.2011 4:35 PM PDT

That's what I'd do. I'm sure several Mods have alts for when they just want to take a break.

He'd have instantly stopped and knelt down, one fist on the ground, hoping to be impervious to the officer's attacks. When this would have failed and he's in the back of the police car, he'd blame his predicament on his friends for not being team players.
